Do you wash new clothes before you wear them?

I’ve just bought a lovely green jumper from TK Max. My friend asked what I was wearing this evening and I replied “my new jumper”. Her question was would it be washed in time? I must confess it hadn’t crossed my mind to wash it!

In a nutshell, no! Life’s too short.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 08/11/2025 13:33

No never - that way madness lies. If it was second hand yes.

Troubler · 08/11/2025 13:34

No and I never knew people did this till a bloke at work told me he has to wash all his new clothes before he wears them because of the chemicals

Beamur · 08/11/2025 13:35

Generally yes, because clothes and bedding are covered in a kind of fabric dressing - part of the manufacturing process. It's not chemicals you want next to your skin.
Would I wear a jumper I had just bought out the same day? Absolutely.

SirChenjins · 08/11/2025 13:37

Yes always - freshens it up, gets rid of any chemicals and packaging dust, other people's sweat etc in case it's been tried on etc. i have a 15 minute cycle in the washing machine so I use that.

EchoedSilence · 08/11/2025 13:38

No.

BlueBlueCowWondering · 08/11/2025 13:38

Always- I hate the chemical smell of new clothing

RedRiverShore5 · 08/11/2025 13:39

I only wash underwear as new clothes sometimes have starchy stuff on them to make them look nice in the shops and it maybe irritant. Though some shops are a little less than fresh and allow dogs so you do have to be careful. I was in Fatface and there were several big dogs in there and two started on at each other, I don't think I would have bought something from there seeing this and I certainly would have washed it if I had

PermanentTemporary · 08/11/2025 13:39

God no, never. Unless you have some kind of allergy it seems a crazy waste to me.

I don’t bother washing second hand stuff before wearing either, unless it really smells.

FourEyesGood · 08/11/2025 13:39

It depends on what type of clothing it is. Pants, T-shirts, shirts and most dresses get washed before their first wear; anything that doesn’t come into direct contact with my skin doesn’t get washed first.

My logic doesn’t extend to trousers, though - I have no idea why my brain thinks it’s OK for me to get the new-clothes-chemicals on my legs, when I shudder at the thought of them on my torso…

WildestDreamer · 08/11/2025 13:40

Underwear yes, anything else no. New clothes are never the same once washed!
Although DH washes everything new before wearing, because of the dust, chemicals, other peoples sweat etc…

verycloakanddaggers · 08/11/2025 13:41

Yes

persisted · 08/11/2025 13:45

Mostly yes, doesn’t smell right otherwise. I use different detergents from time to time, so it’s a ‘new’ thing. Always have to cut the labels off at necks as well. They drive me up the wall.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 08/11/2025 13:45

Yes. New clothes always smell weird and chemically until they've been washed. Same with towels and bedding.

ShouldITrust · 08/11/2025 14:03

Yes as we sometimes have a reaction to new clothes. Mostly tops.

10sleeps · 08/11/2025 14:11

Yes to underwear, bedding, towels and tea towels!

And I did do DS’s baby clothes but stopped after 6 months or so.

BlazesBoylansHat · 08/11/2025 14:11

Absolutely no way if it's something brand new.

That's the whole joy of a new item for me - the crisp newness. Its never the same once its washed!

I've bought a couple of things from vinted & i have washed the 2 blouses

This perfectly sums up why one should. However, I don’t 🤣

only for DD when she was fresh out of the womb and even then, only because people told me to and I was extremely PFB.

TheChosenTwo · 08/11/2025 14:15

Absolutely not. Part of the joy of buying something new is that it looks pristine and I haven’t had to expend any effort in that.
I’ve made it though this far in life without any reactions to chemicals and dust on my skin, I’ll carry on as I am.

Holiday24 · 08/11/2025 14:18

No, unless it's second hand. Never had a skin reaction or anything.

notatinydancer · 08/11/2025 14:23

No

notatinydancer · 08/11/2025 14:25

Where’s all this dust on new clothes ? Do you all live in the desert ?
also , I’ve never noticed new clothes smelling of chemicals and I buy a LOT of clothes.

Achewyhamster · 08/11/2025 14:28

Yes but only because I buy second hand (charity shops, vinted, ebay) and i dont know if its been washed before I buy it

I once bought a top and wore it straightaway-it had blood on it (I hadn't noticed until i took it off) so I started washing before wearing anything i bought after that

soupyspoon · 08/11/2025 14:39

No never, and I have also been known to wear things straight out the charity shop and they really do have the charity shop pong to them!! Even after a couple of washes I can still smell it so I shouldnt do that really

Im a super smeller (and taster), they do have an odour to them, I really like it, I love the smell of new bedding because of it. I dont wash that before it goes on either
