Do you wash new clothes before you wear them?

I’ve just bought a lovely green jumper from TK Max. My friend asked what I was wearing this evening and I replied “my new jumper”. Her question was would it be washed in time? I must confess it hadn’t crossed my mind to wash it!

Absolutely.they smell and are full of chemicals. Why wouldn't you?

DoAWheelie · 08/11/2025 18:02

From a shop where it's been out on the racks etc, yes as other people may have tried it on.

Bought online where it comes packaged, no I'll just wear it right away.

LaurieFairyCake · 08/11/2025 18:03

Not once have I washed anything new

herbalteabag · 08/11/2025 18:05

Sometimes but not always. Jeans I do because they smell the worst. Bedding always, because I don't want to sleep in chemicals. New going out top - probably not.
I've seen how clothes are stored when in the warehouse - they're not covered over of anything so they're definitely dusty.

KitchenSinkLlama · 08/11/2025 18:05

Always.

LasagneLasagne · 08/11/2025 18:07

If they are being worn directly next to my skin, yes I do. Getting rid of potential residues (dirt, chemicals, bacteria and other organisms) from the production, storage and transport of that garment.

sladtheinkaler · 08/11/2025 18:08

New clothes often have a horrid chemical smell - especially cheaper highstreet brands. I always wash before wearing.

opencecilgee · 08/11/2025 18:09

No. I love new unwashed clothes

Wetcoatsandmudagain · 08/11/2025 18:24

TheChosenTwo · 08/11/2025 14:15

Absolutely not. Part of the joy of buying something new is that it looks pristine and I haven’t had to expend any effort in that.
I’ve made it though this far in life without any reactions to chemicals and dust on my skin, I’ll carry on as I am.

Exactly this! Once washed it’s never quite the same

Douchey · 08/11/2025 18:27

Yes. And the one time I didn't, it was a new bra, I got a patch of ringworm between my boobs 😒

westcott · 08/11/2025 18:29

Never

SoMuchMore · 08/11/2025 18:31

After working in a well known clothes shop and seeing mice crawling over the clothes in the store room, then yes, where possible I do.

A friend of mine, who didn’t wash clothes before first use, had an allergic reaction to jeans and ended up in hospital. The doctors think it was from a chemical used and advised her to wash clothing a couple of times before use.

I’ve seen these threads before and it’s a divisive topic. 😂

I wouldn't dream of washing anything new. And I wouldn't buy anything that I didn't think was fit to wear without washing.

People wash their clothes far too much. Underwear and socks, yes, but really there's little need to wash other things frequently. Jeans and jumpers benefit from not being washed.

Where are you buying your clothes for this to be the case?

JoeSikoraTommysStory · 08/11/2025 18:36

Yep everything new; clothes/bedding/towels ect… get a 15 minute freshen up cycle.

MrsArcher23 · 08/11/2025 18:36

Only baby clothes.

nnyorks · 08/11/2025 18:38

Yes but that is because I worked with in a clothes factory when I was younger picking clothes orders and I use to go home with black shoulder from walking between the clothes from all the dust etc so I always wash new clothes

DancingLions · 08/11/2025 18:39

New - no, second hand - yes.
I actually love the feel of brand new sheets. They're never quite as good once they've been washed.

Topseyt123 · 08/11/2025 18:40

No, I have never done this. I think only people with too much time on their hands do.

pumpkinscake · 08/11/2025 18:41

Never ever

ThisCanFuckOffToo · 08/11/2025 18:41

No although I have been wearing some new tops this week and I’ve been suffering massively with itchy eyes and wondered if it was related.

Sassylovesbooks · 08/11/2025 18:48

I always wash new clothes. It ensures any dust or even grime anyone has left behind after trying it on, is washed away. Also they have that 'new' smell, and I don't like it.

outerspacepotato · 08/11/2025 19:07

Yes. There's a good possibility there's chemicals left over from the manufacturing processes and fabric finishes and dyes plus being handled and tried on by multiple people.

I wash my fabrics before I cut and sew them, I wash new clothes before I wear them.

purser25 · 08/11/2025 19:47

Bedding and towels yes but not clothes don’t know why.
