Hi-vis that looks good - does this exist?

DH and I recently moved to a rural area to be closer to his parents and where he grew up.

I really underestimated how much we'd spend walking along the side of the road - we need to do this to access the only local footpath that's suitable for running (others have too many gates for it to be worth it) and to get to the pub, which is in the next village.

I know I need something hi-vis or similar, but I'm struggling to find a style that doesn't look overly lollipop lady. A lot of the sportier styles marketed as "reflective" are still in darker colours and therefore not much use to me at 3pm on a grey, drizzly day.

Ideally it should be a light jacket that holds up to the rain, is suitable for running, and that I can layer other things under.

Hoping someone has solved this problem before me... thanks in advance!

I think that will be difficult but I'm interested in what the experts of S&B can come up with. You can get sew/iron on tape in reflective and or high viz formats which you could add to an existing jacket but by its nature it's not going to be subtle.

What about a normal coloured coat in a pale colour with a separate high viz gilet or bandolier that you can put on over the top when on dark roads? I have a proviz gilet which is amazingly reflective in car headlights. Or you can get a bandolier with LED lights.

countrygirl99 · 03/11/2025 10:14

Look at equestrian brands

Whatisthisperihell · 03/11/2025 10:19

Have you looked at proviz?

evilharpy · 03/11/2025 10:20

I was going to suggest something like THIS until I saw you wanted it for grey days. I'm not sure how visible this type of thing would be if people are driving around without their lights on and it's still semi-bright. They are amazing at night though.

Is THIS still a bit too lollipop lady for what you have in mind? Ignore the preview if there is one, there's a bright yellow version.

I was also going to suggest proviz

Searching for white hi viz also brings up more attractive results than normal, as does searching for those designed for sports (running etc)

Darragon · 03/11/2025 10:24

I don’t have any suggestions but as a driver who used to drive regularly on country roads in rural Ireland can I say thank you for trying to be seen. You wouldn’t believe how many people just walk on the road with their back to oncoming traffic in black/dark colours in the dark with nothing to distinguish them from the road in single lane areas with no streetlights. On the approach to my house I would drop down to 20 just so I could stop in time because I couldn’t see them.

Somersetbaker · 03/11/2025 10:26

Just go to screwfix and buy several hi-vis vests, cheap as chips. Just shove it in a pocket when you don't need it, throw it away when it get dirty. Who cares about looking like a lollipop lady when a tractor is about to run over you!

CryMyEyesViolet · 03/11/2025 10:30

I have hi vis straps that I wear over my coat like this:

But I do want to buy one of those coats that just look white/pale grey but are fully reflective as I think they do look nice enough in normal light but the visibility they give you is incredible.

This also really annoys me when I'm driving, and I don't want to be one of those people!

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. Provis looks promising, as do the equestrian styles. Something with both neon and reflective material would be ideal as it's not just night-time I'm worried about, it's also daytime when it's grey, rainy, and poor visibility...

These Sweaty Betty leggings are the winter essential you never knew you needed

These Sweaty Betty leggings are a welcomed, impressive improvement to the reflective market

Gofluo have some interesting designs - less construction worker -esque

Hi-vis that looks good - does this exist?
MinnieMountain · 03/11/2025 10:38

Sorry, my post got hidden because of a strange link.
Have a look at the Trespass Lumi jacket.

hivizzz · 03/11/2025 10:40

@evilharpy ohhh I do like these... I'm hoping there's something out there that works just as well style-wise but also has more neon/brightness to it during the daytime...

@LittleNote55 ahhh I love these!!!

Wowsersbrowsers · 03/11/2025 10:51

You could also get a lights harness. We have ones that are white on front and red on the back with a high viz strip. More visible than just high viz although doesn't give the human shape you'd ideally want (drivers notice it more).

hivizzz · 03/11/2025 10:57

So it looks like my favourite one from gofluo (nightglow) is sold out 😔but this one is a close second - do you think the stripes on the back would give enough visibility on a grey day, or better to go for a more neon-heavy style? Sorry, you'll have to click on the link to see what it looks like from the back...

Thanks again @LittleNote55 !

Edit - sorry, not sure why the cover pic isn't uploading when I post, but I promise it's not a dodgy link!

I have a belt I can put on over my coat, it is reflective and bright orange. A friend has one with a red light in it. I just have it in a pocket or bag when I know i am walking home in the dark

DeepfriedPizza · 03/11/2025 14:43

I have a proviz running jacket and it's the sweatiest thing in the world.
DH wears the proviz reflective cap when out walking the dog.
I wear something like this when out running Time To Run Reflective Running Vest Bib Lightweight With High Visibility Ideal For Running/Cycling/Walking/Sports Yellow : Amazon.co.uk: Sports & Outdoors

for 3pm on a grey day then you can just wear a bright jacket, it doesn't need to be reflective. MEN'S RUN 100 HIGH-VISIBILITY WINDPROOF JACKET KALENJI | Decathlon

louderthan · 03/11/2025 15:20

You need one of these!! Lots of similar/cheaper ones on Etsy too.

Try proviz- my friend’s grey jacket looked like a beacon reflecting light from our doorway
