I'm positive there's nothing stylish about this, but lightweight waterproofs

Dp is taking away for a long weekend at the end of November, to The Algarve.

I'm thinking that I should pack a waterproof jacket just in case (but I really, really hope I don't need it), and anybody recommed a lightweight, not hideous and not expensive one please?

What's your style? Does it need to go with dresses or hiking boots? Colourful, patterned, neutral or dark?

Dresses and a pair of jeans. I'm keeping it minimal, and plain, as we're only there for a few days and not taking loads of luggage.

I'm planning on Converse and a pair of sandals or Birkenstock

I have this and it was great in the summer here (UK). You could also look on Vinted for something similar if you really don’t want to spend much.

Protected species

I got one in Primark three years ago for something like £18. It was during October HT so they may have something similar in stock again now. Even if it has cost me 5x as much, I would have been impressed with the quality! Taped seams, adjustable waist. It’s the coat I take for when I might need something but am not sure what so I just about always take it when I go into London for the day (whether going for work meetings where people will be in suits or for socialising) and I’ve taken it with us to the Canaries, New York & Paris.

I have a Berghaus Paclite jacket. Packs very small and waterproof.

Fulton Aerolite umbrella is very light and good if you buy a coat without a hood. 84g!

I'm actually short not tall but I have this from long tall sally, it packs up small, does the job and has some shape

How short are you? I’m 5’3”. Are the arms not way too long?

BlueEyedBogWitch · 01/11/2025 11:30

Protected Species are great, but expensive.

Be careful with Barbour. Mine is totally useless in anything heavier than the lightest drizzle.

Uniqlo will tick your boxes.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 01/11/2025 11:32

I bought this one from M&S for my trip to EuroDisney last weekend.

It was extremely good, excellent length (although I'm 5'2 so it's obviously longer on me) and perfect for just a lighter jacket.

Highly recommend if you don't want to pay much.👍

I like the look of this but like @TwoHoots74 I am worried it will be to long , I am 5'5"

somethingbrown · 01/11/2025 12:45

Protected species. Pick one up cheaper off Vinted.

@Definitelynotme2022 Your shoes won’t work if it rains! Soggy Converse! Take leather trainers. Mountain warehouse has loads of lightweight rain jackets. M&S brands or Goodmove probably do too.

UpMyself · 01/11/2025 12:57

Get a 'pac-a-mac'. I have a nice one but it was a present so I don't know where it's from. It rolls up to the size of a small brolly.

It's a bit like this one The Pack-It Jacket - Foldaway Waterproof Coat for Changeable Days - Seasalt Cornwall

CarefulN0w · 01/11/2025 16:17

It can be cool in the evenings on out of season holidays so my go to now is a thin down waterproof that squashes up so I can carry it in a shoulder bag. I won’t pretend it’s stylish, but it’s less anorak like than a pack a mac. A dark colour with a matching T-shirt underneath also looks reasonably co-ordinated.

I’ve got fleece lined waterproof converse.

I live in central Portugal (so more rain than the Algarve). I'd say don't worry too much about an actual waterproof. I tend to wear something rain resistant and carry a brolly, with the brolly being more important than the jacket. The rain tends to bucket down vertically, and a decent sized brolly will do most of the heavy lifting.

I was caught out around town in the first real rains of the season last week, it was absolutely bucketing down. I was only wearing a hoodie but had a decathlon travel brolly with me. I walked 10 minutes home, yes my hoodie was damp but it wasn't soaking. Also, it tends to rain then stop more than rain all day, so something you can take off and carry when the sun's out is good too.

Pay attention to the grip on your shoes, it's really, really, really important. The cobbles get very slippy in the rain. I had to stop wearing my Merrell Trail Gloves 2 weeks ago because they're not good on the damp cobbles. My Peeko leather boots and Vivobarefoot Magnas are both water-resistant and surefooted in the rain as are my Camper Peu's. If you want sandals, Tevas are surefooted.

Your Birkis will land you on your arse unless there is a brand-new sole on there (speaking from experience). If they're canvas your Converse will be useless if it rains I think, I have a pair of (non-converse canvas) shoes, they simply soak up the rain, the sole is slippy too. I cannot emphasise enough how Winter footwear needs grip in Portugal.
