How to look better at 50 (ish)

SereneSquirrel · 30/10/2025 11:22

I don't mean younger.

I mean healthier, I think. Fresher. Less knackered.

When I look in the mirror I always look tired and old.

I am not trying to look younger, just nicer.

What works for you? More exercise? Better diet? Better sleep? Different make up? Or do I just need to suck it up and accept that this is how I look now?

Giving up alcohol makes a huge difference, even if you only drink moderately.

Annoyingly, I don't drink anyway. Yet still look crap. 🤣

"all meals home-cooked"

ALL of them? I'm in awe. I can only manage it occasionally. Do you cook your lunch the night before and do you work outside the home?

What's the point of looking good if you can't enjoy any nights out or parties?
Yes, I can look good sitting at home with my herbal tea, but what for?

My only tip is face tanning drops.

There is such a thing as batch cooking, you know! (Not that I ever do it, but I will one day…)

You know you don’t have to get pissed to go to a party?

I know and I do it, but I can't do it for EVERY meal. For example, I can take a tupperware to work to re-heat in the microwave, but for my evening class there's no microwave so I'd need sandwiches and I don't bake my own bread...
When I'm out and about on the weekend or at my boyfriend's place, it's just impossible to have everything cooked from scratch.

But it helps, doesn't it?

Gwenhwyfar · 31/10/2025 22:32

And also drinking alcohol is not the same as getting pissed.

Lots of people telling me I look years younger
I dress very young to
I'm vegan and I take multivitamins
I exercise every day

I’m mid 40s but this has applied all my life.. can’t believe how much a good nights sleep makes a difference. If I have a week of good sleep with a few extra hours chucked in then I look fantastic. Have a few bad days and I look so different. No wonder I looked terrible in my 30s when my baby didn’t sleep

I get lots of compliments re my skin and people surprised re my age.
Some is genetic. Drinking water, I try with my diet lots of protein/veg. I don’t have a fancy skin regimen but do have a dermalogica facial for mature skin every few months which really helps give me a noticeable boost. Walking daily in fresh air. Virtually no alcohol. Never smoked. Never had fillers or Botox.
Makeup, I don’t wear it daily but when I do use Charlotte tilbury products and not too much, thick dated makeup is aging.
Hair for me is my big one, grey roots make me feel awful, I have hair coloured every 5 weeks.
I’m busy and active, try new things, travel.
Clothes I wear brighter colours and look at your accessories, nice trainers etc can be much more modern look.
Eyebrows, there’s lots of more natural treatments to give defined brows but not the tattooed on or slug loook. No brows is aging.

@Cakeandusername Curious to know more about natural treatments to give defined brows, what would you recommend? Thank you!

I am in my fifties and have never drunk alcohol. I am very sociable, have great friends and enjoyed many parties. Your comment is a sad indictment of the drinking culture in this country. It’s just so ingrained that people think you can’t enjoy yourself without alcohol, people who drink are boring etc. I hope this belief dies out in future generations!

TheLoyalMintGuide · 01/11/2025 07:05

i’m in my 40s, so a bit younger than you, but also trying to look better/more ‘put together’ after the toddler years. I took some advice on here and paid £££ to have the owner of my local large (and already expensive) hair salon cut my hair.
I sat in his chair and said ‘what do you think will suit me I’ll take your advice.’
He also persuaded me to buy a bottle of decent shampoo from them rather than the supermarket stuff that I was using.

anyway - result is best haircut I’ve had in years. I look so much better with it. Hair falls nicely, not too long or short, easy to blow dry.

spending over £100 felt like a real indulgence but now I’ve had it a few weeks I’d say worth every penny.

Sex ….by yourself or with someone….gives you a glow.

Dragonscaledaisy · 01/11/2025 07:30

Lots of time and money to spend on self care and living a stress free life.

If you've never had a drink you don't know what you're missing. I do envy you that.
Also, I don't live in 'this country' if you mean UK.

Collagen

I've been taking it for a while, maybe a year and while I'm not ageing badly, I can't tell if the collagen is doing anything. I'll continue anyway as it does no harm.
Have you had good results?

I agree about the drinking culture. If you don’t drink you are assumed to be dull.

@Gwenhwyfar

My hairdresser asked me (unprompted) if I was taking it as i had so much new hair growth. I’m also getting lots of comments about my skin glowing.

I haven’t made any other changes and drink way too much wine so for me it has to be the collagen. I just get a cheap one from Amazon.

Screwyoucolin · 01/11/2025 09:15

Sorry but botox for me. At 49 nothing is holding the wrinkles back. I look haggard without it. I only have it once every 8 months or so but wouldn't go without it now.

Just started using tret which is good.

Don't drink any alcohol.

The tablets are big and can be hard to swallow. Lots of people get Collagen as a powder you add to drinks but I don’t like the idea of that!
