Trainers at 50

BatsatHalloween · 27/10/2025 09:23

I'm nearly 50. What trainers to wear? I will only wear them with jeans and baggy trousers.
I got some beige and white Nike high tops, but I don't know.. I don't even know whether I should wear the tongue in or out.
I think I would prefer a slimmer trainer, sort of pump style. I don't want to look like I'm trying too hard, I don't want to wear the same as the kids, I don't want to look like a cliche, but I do want to look vaguely cool.
Even worse, they must provide some support. I used to wear Gola tennis all the time and they are no good for my feet, hips or gait I actually used to wear them a lot before they were everywhere, in OB etc - but that's a coincidence, I'm not setting any trends over here.

Personally I love onitsuka tiger, comfiest trainers I ever owned, slim fit, low profile, and great hidden arch support. I could walk miles in them.

I feel like I'm in the same trap as you op. I used to like onitsha tiger but they don't offer any support. The best made I've found are Hoff, but I can't find a decent colourway in women's.

Ilovegoldies · 27/10/2025 09:36

I was going to recommend Onitsuka tiger too.

StokePotteries · 27/10/2025 09:40

Might be a bit of a cliche now but Adidas Samba, Gazelle or Court are all good. My Hoff trainers get lots of compliments.

Iloveshihtzus · 27/10/2025 09:47

Puma Speedcat.

This years fashion choice.

They are very comfortable, supportive and a huge choice of colours. I just bought the black velvet ones and will buy another pair once I can decide between the huge choice. I decided on the black as they will go with my work clothes and for dressy clothes.

DappledThings · 27/10/2025 09:49

I'm wearing some Asda ones that are really comfy. Look vaguely Adidas like if you squint.

Ddakji · 27/10/2025 09:54

I’m 54 and live in trainers. I have some pastel blue adidas campus ones, and a couple of pairs of Brooks.

Newmeagain · 27/10/2025 09:54

I think it really depends on your style.

However, in terms of fashion, I would probably go for some suede ones.

I personally don’t like trainers that look too much like you are about to go on the football field etc if you are not actually doing that…. So, for example, I would choose Puma Palermo over Puma Speedcat.

nopiesleftinthisvehicle · 27/10/2025 10:01

Mid 50's, lived in Trainers my entire adult life and wouldn't cross my mind to choose according to my age

Adidas black with white stripes currently (buy brand new with tags on vinted) they go with everything.

fouroclockrock · 27/10/2025 10:03

I have some fashion type dressy trainers that are nowhere near as comfortable or supportive as my (neutral beige) Asics. Wondering why I didn't just get them ages ago!

Belladog1 · 27/10/2025 10:10

I'm 51 and have just got into trainers. I have three pairs now of Skechers. I have the Go Walk Flex, Stand on Air and Artistry Chic trainers. My favourite is the latter pair .... like slippers and look great. I have very narrow feet with a high instep, and I decided that good trainers are the way to go.

Mumwithbaggage · 27/10/2025 10:22

I'm 61 and apart from my gym/sports trainers I always wore Converse but am now loving my brown/beige suede Adidas spezials. So very comfortable.

Mumwithbaggage · 27/10/2025 10:23

Too many nice suggestions on here - loving those Onitsuka tiger trainers!

unsync · 27/10/2025 10:50

Birkenstock Bend. I'm not a trainer person and I have six pairs of these. Comfortable and supportive, you can wear them all day with no problems.

Siriusmuggle · 27/10/2025 11:04

I’m 50. My current non running/gym trainers include adidas spezials, adidas gazelles, new balance 9060, on clouds, vans, nike dunks and converse chuck Taylors. I’m not a fan of non branded trainers but that’s just me.

JosephineBoneApart · 27/10/2025 11:10

I don't think 50 is old enough to 'worry' about trainers.

I prefer those that don't have massive white soles .

Maybe look online at the brands on J Lewis and see what grabs you?

I've not bought any myself but my trendy daughter is in Marks ones.

I've a couple of pairs of New Balance .

Tootyfilou · 27/10/2025 11:17

Why should your age dictate what trainers you wear?

HauntedMushroom · 27/10/2025 11:25

The mention of age is really confusing! Wear whatever you like.

I still wear my Gazelles because I love them and have worn them since the 90s (I'm in my 50s). I wear mainly black clothes so like my trainers to add a bit of colour - Gazelles come in so many gorgeous colour combinations. Really comfortable too, but as with all Adidas, size up by half a size.

handsdownthebest · 27/10/2025 11:30

Age is irrelevant to me now as I’m 61 and wear wtfiw.
For comfort and style reasons I wear various NB trainers.
For gym and running I wear Nike and asics

I'd love to wear my old Gazelles but plantar fasciitis put paid to that!

I like my AF1s, a Sainsburys AF1 knock off in yellow and white and Sainsburys pink trainers.

I know, a nightmare having to consider dodgy feet. Most women I know, of my age, are having feet problems now. I used to wear those flat styles but they would break me now.

Silverbirchleaf · 27/10/2025 21:08

I’ve just brought some Puma ones .

Was in my local chemist earlier. Two completely different aged women had the same trainers on, (or very similar), which shows age is not a barrier.,

cupfinalchaos · 27/10/2025 21:10

What about ON trainers? So light and comfortable, I wear them with an arch support.

jonnybriggswasgreat · 27/10/2025 21:13

Life is too short to use up energy and headspace about 'age appropriate' clothes and footwear.

My choice is the extremely comfy New Balance 237.
