Does the name of a perfume ever put you off it?

Would the name of a perfume ever put you off trying it or put you off wearing it even if you actually liked the smell?

I was given a bottle of Insolence by Guerlain some years ago and the name really annoyed me.

It made me feel women wearing it were being compared to a disobedient child.

But maybe it is just me that thinks about the name of a perfume at all.

I think Liz Earle perfumes have beautiful, simple bottles and packaging and names.
I think Tom Ford packaging is really ugly.

Yep. The designer Helmut Lang brought out a perfume named after himself. It was gorgeous but there's no way im telling anyone i smell like Helmut. 🤨

Maybe Baby by Benefit (RIP). Was a gorgeous peachy after shower smell but the name either meant
“Yeah whatever love”
or
”Oh fuck I’m pregnant”

Sauvage now just reminds me of the defaced Sausage posters.

Edited

For I loved Maybe Baby! Was gutted when they did away with it! Used to have the litre sheeny powder puff thing in the same scent too!

My mum, a widowed practising Christian, was asked in church what perfume she was wearing. She only picks up what can be bought in person so that she can try it first, and it has to be reasonably priced. Anyway, she lied and made up a name, because it was really carried Private Show.

dudsville · 27/10/2025 07:18

Forgot to, that yes, the name and the bottle shape also matter to me.

Also came on to say Good Girl but I see it’s been covered. Woof woof.

AmethystAnnotation · 27/10/2025 07:22

Not the name as such but I'm always put off if it's a range brought out in the name of a celebrity I have no interest in.

ConcussedPigeon · 26/10/2025 18:37

Yes. Good Girl. Sounds like a dog being patronised.

A dog being patronised has already made my day 🤣🥹

FightingInAVatOfJellyBabies · 27/10/2025 07:31

Daisy, daisy, daisy, daisy, daisy, fuck off.

WTF!
Mind you Tweed from the same era was awful too but in a very different direction.

Good Girl did for ages, when I finally tried ig I really liked it tho so got over it.

Also the boy smells brand, that was popular a few years ago.

Iwanttoliveinagardencentre · 27/10/2025 07:38

Those Jean Paul Gautier ads with the sailors really put me off too.
Actually, I can’t think of a perfume advert which attracts me at all.

IDontHateRainbows · 27/10/2025 07:38

And Gucci Guilty. Glamourising having an affair basically.

I want to buy the knock off insolence but it's called Abusive!!!

I can’t believe anyone thought this a good idea!

Daisy, daisy, daisy, daisy, daisy, fuck off.

Yes! I goggled at the Daisy advert thinking it
must be a spoof.

In comparison I remember with fondness the adverts for Anais Anais back in the day ‘ le plus tendre’. I’m old and remember loving it as a teen.

Oh I loved Tramp back in the day! No way would I buy something called that now though!

Iwanttoliveinagardencentre · 27/10/2025 07:45

I like simple names like the old Penhaligons.
Or I did love Guerlains L’heure Bleu and Apres l’deluge

I love a lot of Tom Ford but the ones with 'cheeky' names make me cringe (Vanilla Sex, Lost Cherry - I do wear dupes of both though).

And absolutely agree with the hate for perfume adverts - have never forgiven Chanel for that creepy version of 'You're The One That I Want".

I hate the brown packaging. It makes me think the perfume would smell like the inside of a musty old cupboard.

Given that imagery, tone, style are precisely what we’re paying for when we buy perfume - rather than just odorous liquid in a bottle - the name the manufacturers give the thing is obviously crucial.

When I hand over my £250 (or whatever) I’m investing in an idealised (and often novel) story of myself - and every single element of the product; named perfumer, brand, social media, price, meaning and history of concept, rarity of ingredients, visual presentation, stockist, etc, etc has to be exactly spot on to maintain the feeling of being enthralled for long enough to click ‘Buy’.

It’s not just you!

Crikey. I just want to smell nice Grin I know nobody is entirely immune to advertising, but I can't imagine buying into the marketing of a product to that extreme extent! As long as the name wasn't in some way actually offensive to me, I would buy the perfume if I really liked the scent. I could afford to buy £250 perfume if I wanted, but I don't, because I don't actually believe it would objectively be any better (whatever that means in this context) than £50 perfume.

Mind you Tweed from the same era was awful too but in a very different direction.

There was also ‘Panache’ in the same period. Foul, but a good name.

Next sometimes do good names - I rate many of their perfumes which I’d say are more ‘ in the character of’ than direct dupes. Next’s Candied Flowers (autotext changed this initially to ‘Brandie Glowers’ - brilliant name😁) was in my opinion a far superior La Vie est Belle. I also loved their ‘’Enchanted’ which smelled like it sounded - deep, woody, witchy, lovely. Long gone sadly.

The PP above said she didn’t like the JPG female formed bottles. There’s a next one that’s in similar vein that is actually ergonomically pleasant to hold and smells VG.

Lottapianos · 27/10/2025 08:01

'There’s one that’s shaped like a high heeled shoe? I’m sure it’s very lovely'

That's Good Girl by Carolina Herrera. I got a sample of it ages ago and it's the only perfume I've ever wanted to scrub off myself! Absolutely hated it!

Iwanttoliveinagardencentre · 27/10/2025 08:09

Just to show that I’m not all fur coat and no knickers when it comes to perfume,
I like the name Flowerbomb but the perfume makes me nauseous.

FourFiveEightNine · 27/10/2025 08:14

Either I haven’t made my point well, or you’ve entirely missed it, @MagicLoop. I suspect the former!

When I mentioned social media, etc - for me it’s more a matter of being repelled by any loud marketing at all.

And really the price is only relevant insofar as it feeds into the whole narrative. I could afford a dozen coats from Shein - hell would freeze over before I bought even one.
