Collagen who takes it?

I keep reading about collagen & how effective it is. Does anyone on here take it & what are your thoughts? If so, do you recommend a brand?

I’m 34 & wondering if it’s something I should think about taking.

I take Ancient and Brave collagen. I’m 55 and take it for joint health more than skin, but I’m not sure how effective it is. Hard to tell really.

VenusClapTrap · 26/10/2025 17:30

Snake oil.

BauhausOfEliott · 26/10/2025 17:42

There’s zero evidence that it helps.

deeahgwitch · 26/10/2025 17:44

I’m taking collagen for some months now. Really to improve my nails.
Sadly my nails are not improving however I have lots of new growth in my hair.
My hairdresser has noticed it.
While this new hair is growing it pushes the hair on top of it a bit skew ways which is annoying as it sticks up oddly 😀but I won’t complain.
I started with marine collagen but saw no improvement in my nails after about 4 months so switched to bovine collagen. I’ve been on it for about 6 weeks.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 26/10/2025 17:44

I’ve been considering it for the musculoskeletal aspects of perimenopause but have held off because I’ve not found any evidence that it has any beneficial effect.

Happy to be proven otherwise!

Wedonttalkaboutboris · 26/10/2025 17:46

I was on marine collagen for over 6 months and didn’t notice any improvement in my nails but felt like my hair was thicker?

Following this thread as was considering buying some more again but at £40+ a pop, wasn’t sure if it was worth it.

CakeIsNotAvailable · 26/10/2025 17:50

As others have said, the evidence base doesn't really support taking oral collagen supplements. I'm a doctor and when I looked into it, I decided not to bother!

Passthecake30 · 26/10/2025 18:01

I tried marine collagen for a few months, it didn’t do a thing.

FizzPlease · 26/10/2025 18:04

I have been taking collagen for years and didn't notice a difference. Switched to Nutrition Geeks and WOW, it is amazing. I cannot be without it and notice in my face when I run out - so I can't run out.

I put 2 flat tablespoons in my morning coffee.

Main things are, as I say, my face - gives me a plumped up look and a glow that folk actually comment on. I get compliments that I don't look my age (nearly 55). My nails and hair now grow at an extraordinary rate (my hairdresser has commented and I've had to bring my regular cut's forward (I have a short style)). My nail woman asks what I am using as my nails are the best she has ever seen.

It is honestly brilliant and great reviews. I know this sounds a bit too good to be true, but it really is a must-take for me.

DottyMcDiet · 26/10/2025 18:07

I’ve been taking the Nutrition Geeks one for a few weeks now, no visible results as yet.
I bought 3 months supply so that should be long enough to decide if it’s worth continuing.

Ghostsghoulsteenagers · 26/10/2025 18:08

No - I could find no evidence it works - I’m in my 50s

thegingeningeclansmum · 26/10/2025 18:10

I also take Nutrition Geeks collagen. I notice a difference in my hair and nails, my hairdresser also commented on the difference. My mum takes a tablet, not sure of the brand but something to do with Jennifer Anniston, and swears it helps with her arthritis pain. That costs a lot more than NG, maybe it is just an expensive placebo.

NotsosunnyShropshire · 26/10/2025 18:18

I take the nutrition geeks one. My nails are noticeably stronger and no longer flake. Still waiting for my hair to stop shedding.

sloshis · 26/10/2025 18:30

The only people I have known it to ‘work’ on, are those who started to take when they became more health conscious. Clue: it’s not the collagen that’s making them feel/look better. The evidence is so weak it isn’t worth the price tag, and I wouldn’t trust a company that makes false claims isn’t also filling it out with the kind of crap that isn’t at all good for you.

Belladog1 · 26/10/2025 18:40

I started menopause and my hair was falling out at a tremendous rate. Every 7 weeks at my hairdressers I would ask if they could see bald spots. I have long hair, its my mane, my favourite thing ...... i love my hair.

I saw marine collagen recommended on another forum so I bought some. Within a month my hair wasn't coming out as much. I still lose a lot, but nowhere near the original amount. A year on, I've stopped worrying about hair loss completely.

Do you remember when we were little (I’m 50s now) and were encouraged to eat a cube of jelly a day for our hair and nails? That was because of the gelatin in the jelly.

Gelatin is just cooked collagen - which is just boiled down connective tissue (gristle - tendons and the like) from beef/fish/pork etc. It’s just amino acid chains. Because it’s cooked the chains are longer so it doesn’t dissolve - instead it has that ’gelatinous’ quality’ we all know and love. Honestly, you’ll get the same effect from a few Haribos every day. I love Wine Gums and have a glossy head of hair and toe nails that need to soaked before they can be cut.

Also, Hi 👋 to the Nutrition Geeks marketing team pulling the late shift on a Sunday 😁

herbetta · 26/10/2025 18:50

I take Multi Collagen (5 types) from Alpha Zero One (via Amazon).

Started when I had a major injury and it was one of the evidence based recommendations to assist recovery.

I have managed to recover back to near normal with only PT - plus hair & nails ate great.

Justwrong68 · 26/10/2025 19:01

Surely bone broth is as good. And still cheaper

I don’t have any affiliation with them, but did start taking it after seeing recommendations on the WLI boards.

yes, also in my 50’s and remember eating cubes of jelly.

TeaRoseTallulah · 26/10/2025 19:53

I've just started taking it, too early to say yet.

HarrietSchulenberg · 26/10/2025 20:01

I take it for my creaky back but I can't say it's making much improvement. When I've finished this pack I won't bother again.

Snakemum2 · 26/10/2025 21:36

I take absolute collagen. Been taking a sachet a day in my morning coffee, for about 6 months, no other changes to my diet and lifestyle and can certainly said my skin is better, hair is thicker and my nails are good. I’m 34 and going to continue as it isn’t harmful and seems to be doing some good!

AutumnCosy2025 · 26/10/2025 21:56

I went to my hairdressers last month, I asked her what was different as she was looking really good. (Slightly more gently!). He'd car waz looking really healthy, slightly longer, thicker etc. her skin looked fresh & it's not like her skin looked bad before, borne her hair...

turns out she's been taking Collagen a few months (3 ish) She uses a powder, just has it in her morning cuppa.

she's only 1 person, but...

LizaRadleywasonthespectrum · 28/10/2025 09:15

I started with marine collagen gummies and my nails were incredible. Tried Nutrition Geeks glow up…… nothing…. Waste of money! Back to the gummies for me.
