Would you be judgey of a goth woman aged 30ish?

you see, I am.
I have changed my name for this, because I am a bit embarassed.
Last time I was interested in my apperance, I was in my late teens. Since then I've been a bit of a slob, but I am interested in how I look again and this is the style I most identify with. Am I too old? Would I look like a saddo? Would anyone give a shit? Should I?

no go for it it really isnt sonmething i would even think about

themoon66 · 05/06/2008 10:53

I know a few and even a couple in their 40s. Go for it if you are comfortable and happy in the look

PinkPussyCat · 05/06/2008 10:53

I suppose it depends on the degree of 'gothness' you go for....IYKWIM!

Mercy · 05/06/2008 10:53

No.

I know a woman who is 50ish and dresses (slightly) goth style.

MamaG · 05/06/2008 10:53

no I wouldn't judge

AMumInScotland · 05/06/2008 10:54

I'd be envious of someone who still had that much committment to their style to be honest.

PinkPussyCat · 05/06/2008 10:54

But seriously, if you like the look and feel comfortable, go for it!

FairyMum · 05/06/2008 10:54

Not judgey, but I think too much black is rarely a good look.

Saturn74 · 05/06/2008 10:56

No, I wouldn't judge.
It would be very boring if we all looked the same.
If you're confident in what you're wearing, then no-one will even notice, I expect.

toooldforit · 05/06/2008 10:56

Thanks for the positive comments.

my dh mocks me (lightly).

I wouldn't be going for it in a big way - just a bit more black - nails, eyes, clothing. I live in a very provincial town and people can be a bit at anything that's not navy and floral, lol!

I'm in no position to judge

Lurkinaround · 05/06/2008 11:01

I'd love to be all gothy but I haven't ever had the confidence.

Actually, I'd like to have different styles of clothes for when I want to be a goth, hippy, 50s-Dita von Teese type, rock chick. I'd feel like I was trying too hard though and everyone would know it wasn't 'me'. So I stick to boring tshirt and jeans. I had a mad urge to dye my (dyed blonde) hair bright red yesterday.

I'd say go for it though re going goth. I wouldn't think you were too old at all. What kind of stuff would you wear?

Lurkinaround · 05/06/2008 11:02

x post sorry.

sagacious · 05/06/2008 11:03

TBH it depends to what extreme you go to

I used to have purple and scarlet and black hair shaved at the back then grown to waist length at the front - I now have a bob and put the occasional red rinse through !

Are you going from "bog standard boden" to full on goth princess instantly?

I take elements from my old style

Jewelery etc but wouldn't do the full regalia now as its not me anymore.

Full on requires confidence and attitude.

If this is you and you feel happy with it then bloody well wear what you want !

zippitippitoes · 05/06/2008 11:03

if it worries you just do it slowly develop a style and save the more extreme look if you still like it for going out and stuff

but on the whole i really dont think people are concerned

morningpaper · 05/06/2008 11:05

As you as you don't drag your husband around on a chain, I don't think people will think twice

MrsBadger · 05/06/2008 11:06

I would, if I am honest

but only to the extent that I'd think 'God, she hasn't changed her look since she was a teenager' rather than judging the Gothic-ness itself, iyswim.

If you were a colleague I might be harsher if you were looking gothy when I expected you to look more professional.

BroccoliSpears · 05/06/2008 11:07

Oh go for it! I have an ace goth friend in her 30s. It's just her. She looks fabulous. I wit I had the energy to do more in the style stakes myself - a good day for me is one where only one of my shoulders has vomit on.

moopdaloop · 05/06/2008 11:08

honestly I think goth-dom is a teenage / early 20's angst thing. I think someone in their 30's adopting the style looks mutton-dressed-as-lamb unless they are all out there with it. If you totally embrace it in everything you do then very well .. but if you just do the odd bits I think you'll look a little lost and trying to hard

I can say this because I don't know who you are, if I knew you (meaning real-life) I'd be all "oh yes, self-expression, aren't you fab" but in truth I'd feel sorry for you

OrmIrian · 05/06/2008 11:11

Wouldn't judge. Why would I?

zippitippitoes · 05/06/2008 11:13

well i dont judge peoples appearance tho i might remark on it to someone eg there was a guy in the suprremarket one day with a shaved head and a made in bolton tatoo on top of his head now i did point it out to my dp at the time

but i thought it was amusing rather than anything else

OverMyDeadBody · 05/06/2008 11:17

Well I wouldn't judge. I'd just assume that this style is what you identify with and what you feel comfortsable in.

moopdaloop · 05/06/2008 11:19

do you judge women in their 50s who try to dress in top-shop style girly-teenage clothes? do you find 'mutton dressed as lamb' springs to mind?

zippitippitoes · 05/06/2008 11:20

i dont but then i am 51 lolololol
