you see, I am.
I have changed my name for this, because I am a bit embarassed.
Last time I was interested in my apperance, I was in my late teens. Since then I've been a bit of a slob, but I am interested in how I look again and this is the style I most identify with. Am I too old? Would I look like a saddo? Would anyone give a shit? Should I?

I am Judgy McJudgeson - I judge people for dressing too old, too young, too frumpy, too revealing, too co-ordinated, too uncoordinated, you name it.

But all I judge is how they dress, I don't extrapolate anything about their character from it.
In fact I was judging our nursery manager last night for some rather ill-advised scarlet highlights, but all that I inferred was that she had (IMO) poor taste in hair colour, not that she was a bad person.

moopdaloop · 05/06/2008 11:37

or indeed a 'scarlet woman'?

zippitippitoes · 05/06/2008 11:38

oh i can think if people look nice or not but i think it is not particualrly a matter of a look being age appropriate it is if you are ahppy and comfortable

i am quite happy with my look these days

i sometimes seek some reassurance ifg i am doing something which is unusual like this black tie thing at bfs work in a couple of weeks but i went off and bought myself a dress without consulting a guidebook firts and i think i look nice in it

tho it does show lots of flesh lol

i dont feel old and my kids dont treat me as old either and my bf is young so it cant all be wrong

if you like goth looks then it will suit you

zippitippitoes · 05/06/2008 11:39

I imagine in a provincial town you would fit right in

no I wouldn't bother. Have friends who are Goths in their 30s. Why should it worry me?

Note: a bit of black nail varnish and extra eyeliner do not a Goth make . You need corsets and an annual trip to Whitby (as far as I can make out)

SummatAndNowt · 05/06/2008 12:30

No I wouldn't judge you, but, if this site has taught me nothing else it's that, people WILL judge you!

But if you're okay with that then go for it! My sis is a 30ish goth woman!

I was just saying to my hubs this morning that I wanted to go back to dressing like I did when I was younger, all flowery skirts and cotton tops with tassles or tie-dye, expect at my age and weight I'd just end up looking frumpy rather than earth child!

hoppybird · 05/06/2008 13:01

30-ish is certainly not too old! As far as judging is concerned - well, I wouldn't judge someone based on appearance, but I would make slightly educated guesses about the kind of music they liked, or their general interests.

Belonging to a 'tribe' whether goth, mod, punk, hippy etc in your teen years as denoted by the way you choose to dress, is an easy shorthand for other teens to guess the kind of music you're interested in. Thus you are more easily able to find friends or partners with whom you have something in common.

People who have never affiliated themselves with any kind of style, other than the current fashion, may not understand your wanting to project a certain type of image, but that's their problem. If you've been a bit goth before, you can certainly carry it off - more so than someone who might 'dress up' as a goth for a one-off party. The full-on goth style takes time, but certainly goth-ish elements in what you wear wouldn't look out of place.

You only live once, and you may as well live your life as yourself, rather than as what others expect you to be.

no course not, we have the oldest punk in town here. he's in his fifties and always wears the same outfit.

LavendersBlueDillyDilly · 05/06/2008 13:11

I think it's a look which actually suits some poeple.

I do think you need to tone it down as you ger older, but can maintain elements.

I have a good friend whi is 38yrs and she has a 'mild goth' look. She has long dark hair, which she dies alost black or sometimes red rinse, tends to wear alot of black and heavy black eyeliner etc when she goes out and gets dressed up.

By day she is quite a conseravtive teacher, waering normal, but black teachery clothes with hair tied back and normal make up.

The look is just her, I am sure she will maintain a 'leaning' that way always.

Oh, she is very lucky though and has beautiful pale skin and naturally dark thick hair, so she is half way there already!

cmotdibbler · 05/06/2008 13:18

I always wanted to be a proper goth, but am neither delicate or curvy (the two ways it looks great) enough to pull it off. DH wasn't a goth, but had a great preference for goth girls.

I do have long hair, and by preference wear all black/purple (but do have coloured clothes these days), and if I was going somewhere I can get away with it, use black eyeliner etc.

In my younger days I was a total rock chick in microskirts and thigh high boots in the evening and black stretch jeans, boots etc in the day. Still the long hair and black eyeliner/eyeshadow too.

If its not too full on, I think its a look that can work well. And if it makes you feel good, you'll look good

VictorianSqualor · 05/06/2008 13:32

Well, I'm 27, so not far from 30, and I have black hair, always wear black eyeliner/eyeshadow and black nail varnish so in that respect I don't think I'd even notice!
If however you were to start wearing the huge goth boots a black cloak and bright purple and black lacy basque, then it might raise a few eyebrows!
