god knows when I last had a facial

probably 20 years ago

I do the odd facepack, take make up off at night but nothing more really

I want someone to attack my face with a high pressure hose

do you have facials, how often, with whom and how much?

[gets out mag mirror and cries]

Am in same boat, I've been looking in mag mirror (squeezing ) and now I just look blotchy. I think I might need some professional help!!

Oliveoil · 04/06/2008 14:22

oh I can't do squeezing, someone might come in!

I am peering thought and not liking what I see

it may just be age though and general haggardness but am thinking a facial may make me look bright and fresh faced? [hopeful]

I don't do facials (can't afford).
But.
Simce Occtober, when my skin was shocking, I have done this daily and it has made a mahooisive difference.

a.m. mix tiny amount of St Ives scrub with small amount of clarins, rub on and around for a few mins concentrating on mouth and chin (my worst bits. Rinse off using muslin cloth. Follow with slightly astringent toner (i like garnier one cos cheap).Moisturise well.

p.m. face wipe of the nivea type - takes off make too. Follow with night cream, couple of times a week do an intensive one ( been using body shop vit e mask)

oh and lots of water - i try for 4 pints a day.

McDreamy · 04/06/2008 14:23

Don't have facials anymore but do use a scrub regularily and have a "skin care routine" currently using Virgin Vie Vitamin C range. If do find my skin suffers if I don't bother. I've also recently increased my daily water intake (for weight loss not skin) and have noticed my skin looks better for it. HTH

facials

On a more serious and less Finbarr Saunders note, I've never had a facial but often wanted one as my skin is rubbish (not helped by my horrible stress habit of squeezing blackheads ). Being pregnant has transformed it - I've never looked this good before. Am saving up already for the industrial strength treatment I'll need once the baby's out and I start drinking again normal service is resumed.

Oliveoil · 04/06/2008 14:29

I drink lots of water
Use a muslin cloth doodar (with Tesco's cream atm)
Use exfoliator
take make up off at night

but it looks a clogged and am thinking a facial with get rid of the gunk [vom] and give me a clean slate

has anyone had a Clarins one?

I've had a few dermalogica ones - they are lovlely and the products are very light and soak in

DrNortherner · 04/06/2008 14:31

Lol at olive gazing at her reflection whilst at work.

DrNortherner · 04/06/2008 14:31

What do you mean it looks clogged?

Oliveoil · 04/06/2008 14:32

I am extremely busy and a cog in the wheel of this establishment

yes, have heard good things about Derm and Thalgo ones

I may peruse Selfridges and Harvey Nicks and ask the orange footballers wives

  1. Get some good exfoliant. Use it regularly.
  2. Get some cleanser and splash your face with water after using it.
  3. Eye cream and mosituriser.
  4. Drink water
  5. Most importantly stop looking in the mirror.
DrNortherner · 04/06/2008 14:34

Olive you are conjouring up minging images of yourself here. And I always picture you as sienna miller boho chic type gal (what with your rock star connections and all that)

Get those plaster type things and whip out the black gunk.

Oliveoil · 04/06/2008 14:36

I would love to look like Sienna Miller (but brunette).

sigh

I had my first ever facial a couple of weeks ago (just before my 40th birthday) at a gorgeous salon where they greeted you with wine while you wait....and it was soooo worth it! I too wanted a "clean slate" and achieved it, I think. They deep-cleansed and did a tingly acid pack thingy, and extracted all the gunk (ewww!). I was glowing, I tell you!
The beautician said I needed to cleanse twice - first a cold cream to take off any make-up and then again to actually cleanse my skin. Exfoliate once a week. Pack once a week, and use moisturiser religiously.
I felt when I got to 40, I shouldn't be leaving it to chance anymore...but I don't use expensive products.

pattymc · 04/06/2008 14:48

I have had a few dermalogica express facials which I loved as not too long but still get down to the nitty gritty blackheads and a good steam. BUT the only way (unless you are very rich) to get good skin is regular exfoliation and good creams. I don't think you have to spend a fortune but I used the following since getting married (2 years ago) and my skin looks better than it did in my 20's (apart from the wrinkles!)
every day I splash face with water (nothing else) and apply
Boots protect serum (only in last year) any serum is good
Dermalogica smoothing cream (moisturiser)
same splash at night but I apply night cream
and once a week I use
an Origins facial scrub
Liz Earle cleanse and polish
dermalogica vitamin power moisturizing mask

seems a lot of hassle but it's not and skin feels really smooth

pattymc · 04/06/2008 14:59

had a clarins one and it was too much massaging. maybe you should try one of those microdermabrasion kits

MissingMyHeels · 04/06/2008 15:08

I have had lots of Clarins facials - they have a few different ones, the pro active range are very massage focussed but they do a personal blend aromatic if you don't want a massage-y one.

Microdermabrasion is great but you need a few treatments and it is quite harsh.

Personally the best facials imo are Guinot - either the Beaute Neuve or the Hydradermie.

For a good facial expect to pay £40-£60.

Oh or a Liftsome which is the Guinot anti-ageing one if you want to look 19 again!

AllwaysDoingSomething · 04/06/2008 15:12

I have would have clogged up skin (blackheads and general dullness) if it wasn't for facials every 3/4 weeks. I pay £40 for an hour of cleansing, exfoliation, facial massage (great for circulation) detox mask and moisturiser, plus arm and shoulder hot stone massage (I'm in Merseyside) It is something now I couldn?t do without. I keep a simple routing at home = cleanse, tone & moisturise.

Oliveoil · 04/06/2008 15:14

have looked at the Guinot ones and there is a salon not 5 mins from me

hmmmmmm
