Not dressed up enough

I've been to 2 events recently and not felt dressed up enough (I'm 54) a bottomless brunch and an all dayer soul/funk music concert. I wore day midi dresses to both events. Most of the women there were in sequins, velvet, high heels.

Is this common not to dress up or am I not making an effort?

By the way I ordered this dress after the music event and some faux suede knee high chocolate Cowboy boots from Asos as I'd seen similar women dressed like this.

I think at that age, what's the point dressing up? Smart casual, clean clothes are probably enough.

I’m hoping this poster was taking the piss, because I see some ageist bollocks on here but this is truly top tier.

Everyone should be ageist though. There is an age of consent for a reason.

Please tell me you're joking. If not, please fuck off with the ageist bollocks.

I don't like the dress posted, but of course it's okay to dress up if one wants to, at any age.

Haha, okay. Age of consent versus age of giving up and just wearing tidy clothes - there’s surely quite a few years between 16 and dead in most cases (unless truly tragic circs etc).

I’m younger than OP and don’t especially like the dress she’s posted, but should she wear it if she does? Hell, yeah.

'At that age'? What do you think dressing up is for; to enable conception?
Dear god, what a depressing outlook/statement/judgement.

I think there's probably a middle ground.

You said it so much better than me 😂

MixedFeelingsNoFeelings · 07/10/2025 20:27

Can I just say that I'm sad to see velvetism on MN. Velvet is a beautiful fabric, not old-fashioned and definitely not just for Christmas.

I wouldn't wear it to a Beckenham soul night (obviously!!) but otherwise it's my go-to for age-appropriate slinky vibes.

Pokerprincess · 07/10/2025 20:31

Ah Soul Town at Beckenham! I don't think that is representative of what most people wear for a day time thing. It was as another poster said very glam and festival vibes.

ozarina · 07/10/2025 20:34

Out of sheer curiosity about an event I'd never heard of I found these photos. Many people are just ordinary 🤷‍♀️

Yikes

They’re complimenting the jumpsuit not me, but the point is they do some nice ones.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 07/10/2025 21:44

That dress is a joke right OP?

Beckenham is really Kent. Kent is a lot like Essex culturally.

It's not what you would wear to a daytime brunch in London. It seems a lot for brunch in any case but was this really a very boozy thing, so more like an evening party but in the day?

But you can wear whatever you like at whatever age you like. Be casual if you want. They've invited you because they like you already. You don't need to dress differently to fit it to make them like you. They already like you.

However, IMHO that dress is not very nice

It was indeed very boozy! I happily downed 10 cocktails whilst there. It was a daytime brunch but with a boozy vibe, DJ spinning tunes etc.

I agree that as Beckenham is really Kent it is a lot like Essex culturally.

I do like and have kept the dress I posted, as a PP said I think I'll get a longer slip to go with it. It looks a lot better on and less tacky in real life.

Go on let’s see then as no one is going to believe you, there is anyway to have that look not tacky, but I admire your balls in sticking with it,
