What can I pair this dress with to keep warm?

WallaceandGrommit · 27/09/2025 21:56

I am attending a wedding in the next few weeks and have bought this dress www.marksandspencer.com/crew-neck-column-midi-dress/p/clp23042088?intid=mobile_app_pdp_share However, I have no idea what to wear over it to keep warm! I always feel cold so it will probably be on for about 70% of the day.

I’ve browsed various jackets/cardigans but nothing has jumped out at me yet.

Any ideas or inspiration would be greatly appreciated!

I'd go for some kind of light coloured shawl. Easy to pop on and off.

Clueless12389 · 27/09/2025 22:02

What a gorgeous dress! Agree a pashmina sort of thing would work, you don’t want to cover too much of it.

LivingTheDreamish · 28/09/2025 00:39

Also love the dress! Agree a shawl/wrap is the answer as the sleeves won't really work with any kind of jacket/cardigan.

GarlicPint · 28/09/2025 04:10

Lovely dress! I've just had a quick look at capes & ponchos, but they're all too pedestrian, too glittery or very expensive. Except this one, which is beautiful and inexpensive, but probably unsuitable for your needs.

It's very sparkly! It has sleeves though and I don't think with this dress that sleeve upon sleeve will work.

Some kind of shawl/wrap - delicately remove it once indoors, then when it's slipped from the back of your chair, get your heels caught in it and faceplant on the way for a wee.

Just me then? 🤣😭

Sorry.

A wrap/pashmina/shawl is definitely the way to go. I'm torn between a cream or a red wine colour.

Yeah shawl / pashmina

Hamsterdamn · 28/09/2025 11:07

I’d probably wear thermals underneath- silk or Uniqlo.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 28/09/2025 11:09

Think about underneath as well as on top. Eg lightweight thermal vest (cheaper one, as you'll need to cut the back away). Plus a half slip. Possibly thermal short johns if youre really cold.

NapoleonsToe · 28/09/2025 11:12

I'd pair it with a stole from here:

DogBagKite · 28/09/2025 11:21

I'd get a black blazer, but wear it draped on your shoulders, not putting arms in the sleeves (until the end of the night when it's freezing and everyone is too drunk to care) Cooler and smarter than a pashmina, casually slung on your shoulders would look graceful and classic and easy to take on and off. Draping it won't squash the nice sleeves of your dress. A bit old Hollywood like a gentleman has lent you his tux jacket. Lots of red carpet styles recently have had long cape like dresses pointing to this look. The long length of the dress is already glamorous and would suit this.

ChocolateBoxCottage · 28/09/2025 11:23

I have an victorian type fitted long velvet coat I wear to winter weddings. It's thin enough to wear inside venues but warm enough to wear on the times your outside too. Not sure where you would buy one now sorry.

clipboardz · 28/09/2025 15:53

I hate the wrap over a nice dress, way too basic

A short heavy cape would work and look more glamorous. A long would work too.

You can do a coat/jacket you just need it to have loose sleeves

GarlicPint · 28/09/2025 16:11

OOh, I like that furry NC jacket, @clipboardz 😍 It also showed a pretty quilted velvet one on the same page, that should work as it has puffed shoulders.

Mind you, I'm now wanting OP to get a huge, fluffy Borg coat I saw on the Debenhams sale pages so she doesn't get cold 😂

Yes, I love the lack of collar.

WallaceandGrommit · 28/09/2025 18:49

Thank you all so much for your suggestions - funnily enough I had that tie front jacket in my basket @GarlicPint

I also like that shirt-cloak @waterproofed, so that will probably end up in my basket too as I have some other outfits that will work nicely with.

I have a few trusty pashminas already, but they definitely won’t keep me warm enough!

I’m envisaging a cropped faux fur or velvet jacket.

Mauvehoodie · 29/09/2025 09:59

I think I'd go with a little velvet or fluffy cropped jacket of some sort and then also thermal tights and a vest. It's a beautiful dress and it'd be nice to show off the sleeves at some point.

Hedgehog23 · 30/09/2025 07:06

I was also going to suggest a thermal underneath (and warm tights), but it depends on whether the dress will cling to it (though you might manage a thermal vest with a slip on top and then the dress.

i would probably wear a cardigan, but the. I love a cardigan. Some of the suggestions look lovely, but not necessarily warm.
