Can I wear knee high boots with a dress?

I’ve just bought a lovely dress (with pockets yay!) to go to a day do. Can I wear brown knee high boots with it (for comfort and warmth) or is this a terrible idea? Will try to post the dress for you to tell me what to wear with it please. I’m 5.3 size 12 on top but more like a 10 waist (Big boobs) and I think I’m apple shape but the dress looks flattering I think. Or what other footwear would you recommend please? I was hoping to avoid heels

Perhaps I should add that I’ve bought the petite version of this dress. I think it looks longer in the model than it does on me.

Good grief - how is this even a question?

Millions of women are walking around (or sitting in restaurants or at the theatre, or wherever) at this exact moment wearing a dress and boots. It’s not in any way at all an unusual combination.

(I’m actually quite … shaken that you’re so uncertain about something so commonplace.)

InMyHealthyEra · 25/09/2025 22:47

I think they’d go well with the dress

Wordless · 25/09/2025 23:04

Should add - I think the dress would look better with mid-calf cowboy style boots.

This is Style & Beauty - have you stumbled across it by accident? You seem unusually disturbed by a Style question - maybe you need a lie down?!

OP - dress is lovely, and boots would look fab. 💕

cantmakeanomelette · 25/09/2025 23:25

It’s a pretty dress. Personally I’m on the opinion that if you wear a dress with boots there should be a gap between the end of the dress and the start of the boots.

otherwise it can look a bit farmer’s wife

Cbamuch · 25/09/2025 23:31

I think boots are going to look "too heavy" with that dress (which looks very summery/bright). Ankle boots might look ok - not sure.

Hairyhat · 26/09/2025 00:11

Thank you everyone who has commented. I’m off to look at brown boots, possibly mid-calf cowboy style.

Sorry to have left you “quite . . . shaken” at my uncertainty about something so commonplace @Wordlessmaybe a lie down would help?

OP posts:
Hairyhat · 26/09/2025 00:17

Yes I agree @cantmakeanomeletteand I should have explained that the dress is just to my knees in the petite size so hopefully a suitable gap to the top of proposed boots 🤞

You can wear whatever what you like, of course. And no-one would raise an eyebrow at boots with this dress.
However, that dress seems to be a summer dress, while boots give a more autumn/winter look. They will look too heavy. Unless, perhaps, you are wearing some kind of sweater/ cardigan/jacket over the dress, which might work (but might also be tricky as the dress is heavily patterned - a cardigan over it would look a bit [for want of a better word] frumpy).

Neveranynamesleft · 26/09/2025 00:31

I like the dress but I dont think boots of any kind will go with it sorry. Long boots will just look clumpy / too heavy and it isnt the style that will go with ankle boots either. I know you said you want to avoid heels but I think they will be a much better match. Unless you are set on boots, maybe have a trawl through the thousands of styles on Vinted for some ideas ?

Wordless · 26/09/2025 01:13

Summer boots have been a thing over the past couple of years. All the most stylish tourists in my city have been in mini (or at least above knee) skirts and some variety of tall boot. It looks fresh and sharp (and dissuaded me from repurchasing Birkenstock clogs).

Can’t properly see the colours of the dress - is there any black in it?

ClaireByrne · 26/09/2025 02:34

Yes, Boots would look absolutely fine.

You're in the wrong place. We don't talk to eachother like that in Style.

Mich57 · 26/09/2025 07:43

Absolutely!!! Add a denim jacket and cowboy boots and it will look fab 😁

Hairyhat · 26/09/2025 11:03

Thanks @Mich57 I have a denim jacket. I was hoping they were still ok to wear with a dress. I’m so unstylish I never know what’s still “in” or finished

I’ve seen a lot of heavy looking boots with summer dresses these last few months. Also knee boots with teeny tiny shorts

MJMa · 26/09/2025 11:16

I’m currently wearing a dress and knee high boots so I do hope so Grin

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 26/09/2025 11:18

I do think a gap between top of knee high boot and hem of skirt or dress can look quite aging style wise. Obviously on a young person it would look cool but on someone a little older I think it’s a bad look and that would be my only red flag. The hem of the skirt of dress needs to comfortably cover the top of the boot when standing.

🤣. I’ve just scrolled up and read this and realised I said the complete opposite. I’d need to see it infront of me to really know. Perhaps it depends on the floatiness of the skirt or dress.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 26/09/2025 11:30

If you look at the picture and where mid calf will end and the skirt begins - you are revealing the widest part of the calf only. This will make any leg look fatter.

Go ankle length boot.

PoppySaidYesIKnow · 26/09/2025 11:32

Im not sure, the dress looks quite lightweight but hard to tell from photo, in which case it might look like a summer dress with winter boots.

Ha, I had the same reaction - I’m with you in the camp that a longer dress must cover the top of the boot easily.
