£50-£100 for a moisturiser

Can anyone recommend a facial moisturiser for me? I’m early 40s, generally pretty good skin but I’m feeling the effects of the weather getting cooler and the heating coming on! Looking for something that keeps me from feeling tight and itchy. Am a bit overwhelmed with the sheer volume on offer nowadays!

CeraVe lotion and spend the rest of the budget on something fun!

RedPandaFluff · 25/09/2025 08:57

Second CeraVe - tretinoin at night, CeraVe in the morning is working really well for me. I’m mid-forties and looked prematurely aged until I started the tretinoin - it took a few weeks to notice effects, but my skin is great now.

The Cerave as above, but the thicker lotion that comes in a tub with a pump dispenser.

I've also started using The inkey list bio active ceramide moisturiser, which is brilliant for exactly your skin type and unbelievable value for money, under £20.
It's really well reviewed.

I would buy either of the above and a good serum. Again Inkey list, the Exosome serum is one I'd planning to try after reading lots of good reviews everywhere

If your budget is £50-100, then definitely the Skin Rocks one - it's super moisturising and feels very luxurious.

Peridot1 · 25/09/2025 09:19

I find my skin gets quite dry at this time of year too but I find extra layers of hydration more effective than a heavier moisturiser. So I use an essence, a hydrating serum and then a moisturiser. You definitely don’t need to spend a lot of money if you don’t want to.

ThrowAway987654321 · 25/09/2025 10:57

@Peridot1can you share what you use?

interesting what people are saying about cheaper being fine! Will deffo check it out!

Just to throw some more cheapy ones in to the mix - I really like the Cetaphil ones (Cerave doesn’t agree with me!!), Simple or Boots own.

Expensive - Caudalie, Liz Earle, Kate Somerville.

Oh and Vichy’s hyaluronic acid is the best I’ve found. Often on an advantage card offer in Boots!

cromwell44 · 25/09/2025 11:06

Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream. I'm normally stingy and sceptical about cosmetics but I tried a sample of this and have been using it ever since. It's expensive by my standards and at the top end of the price range you mention. I find lots of the richer creams cause me to have break outs.

1apenny2apenny · 25/09/2025 11:15

I would go for a good serum and a cheaper moisturiser, like Cerave recommended above. I’m not convinced about expensive ones.

Peridot1 · 25/09/2025 11:38

@ThrowAway987654321 - I’m currently using a mix of things. I quite like some Korean and Japanese brands - Superdrug have a good selection. The Hada Lobo range is good and very hydrating.

I’m currently using Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Essence, then a Vit C serum, then The Ordinary Peptide HA serum and the Skin Rocks moisturiser that was mentioned by @MonkeyMonkeyUnderpants1. I got it in a Caroline Hirons kit and I quite like it but not sure I’d pay full price for it.

In the past I have used Pixi Hydrating Milky Mist when my skin was dry and liked that a lot paired with Cerave.

And one of my favourites which I go back to regularly is Nivea!

elm26 · 25/09/2025 12:01

I use Clarins double serum (can’t recommend enough) and a Kiehls moisturiser, I love them and my skin thanks me for double hydration!

ThrowAway987654321 · 25/09/2025 12:22

So I'm leaning towards serum and cheaper moisturiser...any recommendations in addition to clarins?

Are you also using a serum before it? Hyaluronic acid serum should help with the dry/itchy feeling. Is you skin generally dry or more combination?

ThrowAway987654321 · 25/09/2025 12:25

No, no serum. And its dry

whatsit84 · 25/09/2025 12:26

In terms of moisturisers I am using a lovely dr organics one called ageless at the moment which has a slightly gel like texture which sinks in nicely. I have combination skin and steer away from anything too heavy in the day though, if yours is drier you may be able to take something heavier. It’s around the £10-15 mark.

Peridot1 · 25/09/2025 12:56

If you decide to get a HA serum- hylauronic acid - they are great for adding in hydration but often work better with a spritz/essence/mist of some sort. So you would use a mist then the HA serum and then another layer of the mist.

MellowPinkDeer · 25/09/2025 12:57

The Charlotte tilbury magic cream is the only one I used. I tried to stop and use an alternative but it really does make such a difference. I also use the serum now, my skin is better than ever.

urbanbuddha · 25/09/2025 13:19

LoafofSellotape · 25/09/2025 08:55

CeraVe lotion and spend the rest of the budget on something fun!

Totally agree.

Sometimes I get serums or moisturisers from TK Maxx - my current serum apparently has a RRP of £120. There’s no noticeable difference between that and my last serum which came from Superdrug.
If you really want to splash the cash though I’d go for Elemis marine collagen cream.

Peridot1 · 25/09/2025 13:20

Elemis is really nice. QVC often have good deals on it especially coming up to Christmas.

allmycats · 25/09/2025 14:29

Queens University Belfast did a test on Elemis and Nivea creams. Result - the actual moisturising ingredients were exactly the same !! It’s the unnecessary ingredients that put up the price and clever design and marketing. You don’t need to buy expensive stuff to get the same results.

24Dogcuddler · 25/09/2025 14:32

Boots No 7 ranges are really good. At this time of year there are lots of gift sets so you could try some products. £10 Tuesday at Boots is a good opportunity to try various brands reduced.
You could get advice in a Boots store.

NapoleonsToe · 25/09/2025 14:33

The best moisturiser I've found is a Waitrose one - Pure - for £3.50. I'd spend a bit more on good SPF, but expensive moisturiser is no better than cheap in my experience.

Allseeingallknowing · 25/09/2025 14:49

Aldi Lacura

Bigcheesey · 25/09/2025 16:02

I can’t believe that no one has mentioned the Tatcha Dewy Skin cream?! It’s my absolute ride or die; and despite using it for several years it still feels a treat when I put it on.

I also use Byoma for the rest of my routine - cleanser, toner, eye serum, hydration serum and then topped with Tatcha. I like to think it’s quite a simple routine but works for me! And honestly my skin is looking as good as it ever has!

APurpleSquirrel · 25/09/2025 16:24

Or get the Aldi Q10 dupe Serum & Day/Night creams for £1.49 each & use the rest of the money on something else?
