£50-£100 for a moisturiser

Can anyone recommend a facial moisturiser for me? I’m early 40s, generally pretty good skin but I’m feeling the effects of the weather getting cooler and the heating coming on! Looking for something that keeps me from feeling tight and itchy. Am a bit overwhelmed with the sheer volume on offer nowadays!

So I'm leaning towards serum and cheaper moisturiser...any recommendations in addition to clarins?

Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair serum is fantastic but expensive, Revolution do one exactly the same for £8, it's amazing stuff.

I love Elemis pro collagen marine cream
And buy at the right time of year and you’ll get freebies with it (eg leading up to Christmas)

La Roche Posay Cicaplast is an excellent option.

'they are great for adding in hydration but often work better with a spritz/essence/mist of some sort. So you would use a mist then the HA serum and then another layer of the mist.'

Very much agree about misting and layering. I use Boots own brand Glycerin and Rosewater decanted into a spray bottle - it costs about two quid per bottle and hydrates brilliantly

Update. I've gone for a Vechy serum and the Inky List moisturiser. Pretty good, but, I could do with a bit more, so thinking of adding a mist. Favourite mists?

Cerave is brilliant. I use the spf 30 one in the morning and the night lotion in the evening.

The money you save can then be put towards something like a good vitamin c Serum and/or a retinol serum.

Curel do a really hydrating mist @ThrowAway987654321. Or the Pixi hydrating milky mist is nice. Another option might be an essence/hydrating toner?

One of the first ones I used was this which I liked. You would use it after cleansing and before your serum and it adds another layer of hydration. Sometimes if my skin is feeling drier than normal I would use a few layers.

@Peridot1whats the difference between a mist and an essence?!

@ThrowAway987654321 mists tend to be more watery and an essence tends to be slightly thicker - instead of spraying as you would a mist you apply with your hands. I prefer an essence but I do use mists as well sometimes. I have the Curel one.

I also rate CereVe but I have oily skin so use the gel version, its great.

Honestly I think the is zero point in spending that much on a single moisturiser - but you could get a full set

I have v dry skin (early 50s)

Aveeno do a good 50sp daily moisturiser, a good dry skin overnight cream for mature skin and a good hydrating serum

Curel also do great products but not particularly better than aveeno and it's more £££. I do use their eye cream though because I can get v dry skin around my eyes and it is better.

I think oil is good overnight. I just use the v cheap Superdrug Vit E one - I dunno if more expensive ones are better.

If it's dehydrated as well you could alternate a dry skin night cream with a hydrating one. Clinique's overnight hydrating masque is the business.

For face wash I use Superdrug's vitamin E hot cloth facial wash in the mornings/If I haven't been wearing makeup (super cheap) and Curels oil based face wash if I need to take make up off

Aquapore balm for any super dry patches (La Roche Posay have a great balm too but not sure it's any better and much more £££)

If you have dry lips then lanolin 101 is great overnight / when it's really bad, and then O'keefes lip balm for everyday

Skin Rocks

@Peridot1

I realise this is an old thread - but do you think the essences really make a difference to keeping your skin moisturised all day?

Peridot1 · 20/12/2025 13:07

@theunbreakablecleopatrajones - for me I find the extra layer of hydration does help. But it really depends on your skin type. I use a few layers - an essence or some sort of hydrating toner, a serum and a moisturiser. Some times I do a few layers of the essence/toner.

Comefromaway · 20/12/2025 13:15

I’m very tried everything from Nivea to expensive skincare brands (though I drew the line at La Mer.)

the expensive ones made me break out. Lancôme made me bleed, Clarins did nothing.

I now use Cerave Am with spf 30 in the morning & Cerave PM face fluid in the evening. My skin has never looked better. I’m also introducing a Retinol & building tolerance.

Get something like Cerave or Byoma or Aveno & save you money for a retinal or peptides serum.
