Is it worth spending £££s on shampoo and conditioner?

Thick frizzy over 50s hair. Is it worth spending the money on Kerastase or similar. Baulking at nearly £60 on shampoo and conditioner....

My hairdresser persuaded me to buy some Kevin Murphy shampoo and conditioner and some other products from her. Spendy but very very good on my hair. Annoying.

Not for me. I have thick course frizzy wavy perimeno hair, it loves a silicone shampoo and conditioner like Pantene or L'Oréal elvive. The only way it looks really bouncy and shiny is a proper blowdry after washing and sleeping on silk pillowcases.

TickTockBridget · 24/09/2025 21:53

I love Windle Lab Fortifying Shampoo & Conditioner, but at £27 a go, I stock up during their Black Friday discount. It’s annoyingly transformed my fine, frizzy, curly peri hair, and I notice the difference if I use random stuff.

cordeliabuffy · 24/09/2025 22:08

Mine is wavy curly and loves Aldi shampoo and conditioner! Although I do use expensive styling products. As long as it’s got protein in then any shampoo and conditioner mostly works for me

I never deep condition but I do like bumble and bumble Sunday shampoo for clarifying/chelating

Doesn't make a difference to my mid-fifties frizzy hair. I now use L'Oreal Elvive Extraordinarily Oil shampoo and conditioner, followed by argan oil and a spray of Lee Staffor heat protecting shine mist. A blast of the hairdryer (a £25 one from Amazon which is absolutely the best one I’ve ever had) followed by the Babyliss Big Hair, followed by a spray of Lee Stafford anti humidity spray and I'm all set with my swooshy, shiny hair that lasts for a few days.

I’ve got natural blonde long hair. A few months ago I changed my hair routine completely and got professional cosmetics.
Very, very basically:
shampoo is for scalp
mask/conditioner for hair
I have 3 different shampoos („hair growth” - x2 a week, „serum control” - x2 a week, „daily shampoo” - on the other days if I wash my hair). I wash my hair twice (first a basic wash, second with a massage), always put a mask on afterwards (closes hair cuticles, wash off), dry with a towel for no longer than 5 mins and put another leave on condicioner (frizzynesz&split endings control plus to comb easily). I also have a scalp peeling (once a week) and a serum to encourage hair to grow (every single day), hair oil and „heat defence” spray. I got a special haircomb (not brush!) and I dry my hair after every single wash with a hair dryer (prevent form bacteria growing on your scalp especially when going to bed with wet hair). I listen to podcasts where a professional teichologist gives advice based on medical researches. Is it worth it? I do see a difference, I wash my hair more often so I look generally better, I don’t scratch my scalp like I used to do cos it was dry and I have notice a huge reduction in how much hair I loose daily (much much less!!!). I spent £200 for the starter pack but I only need 10 ml of shampoo per wash so they last much longer than the average cosmetics. You actually shouldn’t be using to much, it’s a waste and doesn’t make any difference. Anyway - you do what you want and what you can afford, it’s your choice. I now have beautiful hair and healthier scalp and this is where new hair grows so I carry on as long as I can afford it.

Edited

Can I ask which hair growth serum you use?

FlibbertyGibbitt · 25/09/2025 06:37

im wondering if you should embrace your waves/ curls ? Are you hydrating your hair for 5 minutes with water as not doing so causes frizz. I’m a curly girl and don’t buy any expensive products. palmers olive conditioner or Aldi protein. Conditioner. Sometimes will add gel but that’s it.

I wouldn’t waste your dosh for swishy hair as you’ll only get it for a couple of days (from one who knows !)

BadActingParsley · 25/09/2025 07:34

@FlibbertyGibbittthanks, but it’s not really curvy just a bit of a wave. It looks great after the hairdressers so I know some of it is my lack of blow dry technique, I either leave to dry or blast it quickly dry. But pre menopause I could get away with that and it still looked shiny…

@StarlightLady bugger, I wish I'd listened to that before putting my order in! It seems to be the conditioner that's the thing. For normal not damaged hair - seems to make no difference....oh well.

For what it’s worth, I don’t need a conditioner when I’m using the Kerastase. I do otherwise. Straight hair though. I think waves and curls are a different ballgame altogether.

Perfectlystill · 26/09/2025 06:45

No. I have tried all sorts of expensive shampoos and conditioners over the years and dont think the expense is remotely justifiable. High street brands are just as good.

RedRiverShore5 · 26/09/2025 06:58

You could get it and use it on some days, that is what I do so it lasts longer, my hair is better if I don't use the same shampoo all the while.

100%

OvaHere · 26/09/2025 14:19

If I was asked this question under 40 I'd have said no. I used Aussie for years and it was fine. Now at nearly 50 my hair has gone to shit and I don't get on as well with supermarket stuff.

Having said that not all expensive products work for everyone. I've never found any Kerastase products to work for me but others love them. Pureology, Oribe and Davines are some of the nicest hair products I've tried.

UpMyself · 26/09/2025 16:40

The Aussie shampoos have a different formula now.

Amazed that the Radio 4 clip included a trip to speak to people on the streets in Cumbria, and not one of them spoke with a northern vowel sound. How likely is that? Grin
I live in the South Lakes and and can tell you that wherever you may go, there will be a broad mix of accents, with even the local RP having fairly northern, flattish vowels, such as bath rhyming with math..

campista · 30/09/2025 18:32

I have to wash hair daily. Pantene repair actually seems to make it hold its style without irritating my oily scalp. Don't use conditioner ever.

JadziaD · 23/09/2025 16:54

Oh, and my hair is very thick, and naturally very dry and very coarse and a bit frizzy. If youc ould see me right now with swishy, shiney, smooth hair... you'd be sold instantly. Grin

I'm sold which one do you use and where do you get it? I also have long coarse (also curly) hair

yes, I noticed that!

coxesorangepippin · 02/10/2025 01:37

From what I gather, no it's not.

But I have very greasy hair, and the cheap stuff works as well as the expensive stuff.

Remaker · 02/10/2025 01:55

Under 45 the hairdresser would ask me what I used (supermarket brand) and say well it’s working for you because my hair was thick and glossy. After 45 the dryness and hair breakage has started. I’ve just bought some Redken shampoo and conditioner and a leave in cream so we’ll see. Hairdresser also advised that my shampoo, conditioner, mask regimen was wrong as conditioner seals the hair then the mask can’t penetrate it.

I have used l'oreal vitamino for years. I also.like.kerastase and redken.

I buy the l'oreal on amazon. Much cheaper than at the hair dresser.
