My frizz in all it's glory

Or should I blow dry it smooth? It works well smooth but I usually just tie it in a clip or have an updo day to day.
It is natural colour, mousy with brighter highlights probably from sun, lots of frizzy bits, some stuck in neck of my teeshirt here so not the best pic!

No idea if this is curly or wavy, so would like some opinions, god help me, if anyone has the time Grin
Would you say the frizz is a bit too much? Am not looking for products just advice on how you'd wear it really. I've tried all the defrizz stuff and settled on what i have. I did not brush after washing and adding a light frizz cream so this is it in all it's glory.

I am not fond of the over-done look and I am very lazy so it would have to stay like this, maybe I should add a lightweight oil or serum. Or just blow dry it, lol.

It looks dry here but is actually very fine and soft to touch.

My daughters all have curly hair, it’s almost like horse mane it’s so thick, they all condition it weekly and it’s always very curly, it doesn’t make the hair limp and it’s never frizzy looking

So what is your point? We don't all have the same waves or curls. If mine don't appeal to you, that's ok. It sure doesn't need cutting off and I can't afford any more £45 conditioners when it looks shinier after using Aussie 3 min miracle.

Yep, and mine is very fine and is OPs hair
that’s why your daughters needs different treatment and products, it’s the same as straight hair it can be oily or dry or fine or coarse

pinkpony88 · 26/09/2025 22:58

Your hair is really pretty. It has an ethereal quality. 🧚‍♀️

OuterSpaceCadet · 24/09/2025 10:33

OP you have really lovely looking, wavy hair. Whatever you've done in this picture is working for you.

I "can't" wear my hair without tonnes of product application and lengthy diffusing or straightening, yet the end result still looks like other people's "before" pic.

I say "can't" but of course I could. But I am deeply aware of how socially unacceptable my hair is in its natural form.

Isn't that fucking crazy though?

I think it's time we (as a society) critically analyse how we think about hair. I suspect textured hair is actually more common than straight hair. I absolutely hate this obsession towards so called perfection. I think there's an unacknowledged prejudice running below the surface of it. I have noticed, when working in public facing roles, that I often get a better reception when I've straightened my hair. Even though that makes my hair less healthy and less natural.

There is so much on my social media feed about wavy and curly hair ..all these suggestions and products, Merwave and so on .
it has made me look at others hair and I agree .
i think there are far fewer people with natural stick straight hair !
most look like they have a natural wave or kink

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 27/09/2025 08:49

Your hair is similar to mine, I like the Faith in Nature shampoo and conditioner and have started using these products which I find don’t weigh my hair down.
If I don’t use any products I get true frizz Hagrid style 🙈😂

Your hair is lovely.

Itsnottheheatitsthehumidity · 27/09/2025 08:49

I have frizzy har. It's straight on top then goes wavy at the bottom. I try not to use anything on it because I have oily roots too, so within hours my hair looks greasy with many products. It's greying, thick & course. My dad has similar hair, as did my brother (before chemo). My daughter loves my hair. I've tried Curly Girl (disaster) and I used to straighten it every other day, leading to damage. So I just get it cut every three months and put it up at work. My hair is long at the moment. I've had it short, and it sticks out on one side, plus I CBA with the monthly salon appointments. It's a no-win situation!

I empathise with you in how we see ourselves opposed to how others see us. I think your hair is beautiful, I with I had the same waves as you. Hairdressers like my hair because of the volume and I try to keep it healthy, but I find it a PITA!

Gettingbysomehow · 27/09/2025 09:18

I thinks its lovely as it is, I'd die for curly hair like that but you should make sure your ends are well trimmed and blunt and ditch the hairstyle in the photo, it screams elderly school teacher Im afraid 😉

TheOliveFinch · 27/09/2025 10:55

@OuterSpaceCadet I agree there is still a lot of societal pressure to say that straight hair is more desirable and even seen as more professional in the workplace. I’ve had suggestions that I give my hair a good brush or have I tried straightening it . My reply now would be that you are welcome to give it a good brush for me and see the results a la Hagrid. The OP has beautiful wavy hair and it is fine textured and in my opinion that hair type looks best embracing the natural texture. Having the same hair texture I’ve only ever straightened it twice and it looked limp and very dry

wavecurlnoidea · 27/09/2025 12:25

On a whim I straightened it and am currently enjoying that. It's just dry looking either way, healthy or not, so am now looking for something to try to combat that.

I love my wave/curl shape but it is harder to do and much more expensive to run with. There are no miracle products, at any price point, that change my texture or make it glossy.
I will probably do the waves for special occasions definitely.

Lol, I would also have no issue whatsoever looking like an elderly school teacher. I don't perceive anything there as an actual insult, even though you intended it Gin

Possibly a shine spray? I just live with it, mine is in good condition but it’s always going to have a not shiny surface texture
if I start trying to make it shiny it goes too soft again and then limp

wavecurlnoidea · 27/09/2025 14:15

True, it can feel greasy so quickly, not matter how dry it looks.

I like being able to do both, but find either to be hard work and I never really feel ok with my hair. You get a LOT of encouragement to go natural online, like it's the holy grail or something, but then when you do, people then tell you you are doing it 'wrong' and it's too frizzy, dry, ugly, etc.

I think unless you have Princess hair, ie the long extensions glossy instagram hair, people are going to tell you it's unhealthy Confused

I’m not sure if this is a humble brag? Or if you were just raised like me and anything that wasn’t super dark or super blonde, poker straight hair was deemed awful unkempt frizz.

it looks lovely as is, but if you want to change something I would just deep condition between washes, use a satin bonnet at night and hair ties that are good - if you reduce breakages you reduce ‘frizz’
id also chop a few inches off and add some layers so your waves are more pronounced.
I also think there’s a level of accepting unless your hair is as you say ‘princess hair’ and professionally done all the time, it’s just not going to be perfect.

if you use product like gels just put a tiny bit in on the very ends

SwallowsandAmazonians · 27/09/2025 14:27

Your hair looks similar to mine if I don't use products. I use Purology shampoo and conditioner and the Umberto Giannini curl gel plus a little moisturising cream stuff. Leave the gel to completely dry and then scrunch.

Balayage helps to bring out shine, as does a serum.

tealandteal · 27/09/2025 14:30

Your hair is beautiful! If you want tbe curls to be more defined, try the “bowl method”. It can call for a lot of products but I would recommend you spray on a little leave in conditioner (on wet hair) then dunk your hair in the bowl/sink. Smooth a little curl definition cream over and then dunk the hair agin, scrunching up the curls. Do this 2 more times and then pop your hair in a microfibre towel while you get dressed etc. You can dry with a diffuser but I hate the heat, and you can use a gel but I’m not so keen on these. I let mine air dry. It makes the curls into defined curls and less frizz.

See, I don't understand this. I am usually so fed up with my hair that this one photo gave me hope in at least managing to get an even curl pattern (or wave). I am aware that it looks dry, frizzy and shit, but I have tried absolutely everything. Spent so much money in the past trying to go 'natural'.
When I wear it like this, the odd person has gently advised me to cut it, colour it or straighten it, so I am guessing in real life it isn't anything to brag about. I get the strong impression it isn't great.

People on this thread have been very kind, regardless.

I don't know if its how things translate online, or what. But how anyone cold see this as a humble brag beggars belief.

It's also been cut recently, had 6 inches off, and recent trim.
So how much more do I cut it, a buzzcut?
Sorry but it's exasperating being told to cut your hair when you already have.

We likely have different hair? You have enviable shine!

I have tried it all, from expensive premium to pantene.
I have tried Kerastase, OUAI, Dreamcoat, Olaplex, silk pillow/bonnet, various oils at various pricepoints, never brushing dry, bowl method, curly girl, wavy girl, hair masks, using nothing, gloss drops, cutting, finger curling, vitamins..

It's just exhausting. If people find a way that works, that's great, but my photo is the best I can get. I'm not really doing it wrong. It's just my hair.

If I had a pound for every time a curly girl has told me my problems would be fixed by using their products i would be a billionaire. Instead I am just losing more money.

The length of your hair is lovely and the nature of wavy/curly hair is that there generally isn’t a consistent pattern and most of us have a mix of textures , going a bit shorter putting more layers in would likely increase the texture but it is lovely as it is, I have some bits that are quite straight and other bits that form ringlets. Chasing shine can be a bit like finding a unicorn as light does not reflect off wavy/curly hair in the same way it does from straight hair. Like you I have tried no end of products, techniques and routines over the years that other people swear by and they haven’t improved anything for me. I do avoid sulphate and silicones but that is about it

GenuineWorkOfFart · 27/09/2025 15:03

Trust me, that's not what I'd call frizz 😂

What it is, is absolutely gorgeous!

wavecurlnoidea · 27/09/2025 15:16

Thank you, Genuine:) I i wish it wasn't such hard work.

@TheOliveFinch I suppose it's where do you stop cutting though. If I carry on I might as well buzz it off Grin
I've had short bobs and no joy, a few yrs ago I had a crop to my chin and it wasn't any different. I've been in curly communities in the past and there is a good bit of pressure to keep trying new things and it's just wearing at this point. It sure isn't going with nature if you're fighting to layer on more gunk and force sleek curls. Where do we draw a line?

There has to come a point where you can just find a way to manage it (straight or curly) and get on with life.
And I agree, we are sold a lot of useless products to add shine that doesn't work.

Haaaah well I just checked out the back view with my straightened hair experiment and OMG it's so dry, weird and messed up. I very gently straightened it with leave-in kerastase defence and didn't touch the ends but they still look jagged and pokery.

I think I am going to have to stay something close to the natural waves, but maybe wear it up. So any nice updo's for winter? Grin

I think I've always had issues wearing it loose since childhood, it's either really poofy or like straightened cardboard either way. At this point apart from a serum or something I am not prepared to spend any more money.

Ok well I'm not telling you to use these particular products but you did speculate on adding a serum etc. I am just saying that my hair looks like your hair if I don't use the products.

Good god, I appreciate your help, please forgive my impatience, I feel like I've tried everything from products to cutting, and I suppose my photo is just how it will always be. But a serum is in order, I would love to try a light one for fine hair. Using them in the past had no effect, however, so I wonder if it's worth it after the Kerastase one didn't help.

The posts suggesting I am bragging are also a bit confusing.

It really made me fed up today after straightening it, only to look worse. Apologies to everyone for getting stressed Flowers

I have fine-ish wavy hair - Dyson hairdryer was a game changer - no other hairdryer works without blowing my hair all over the place - I use Boucleme Curling gel applied to hair that has been squeezed, not towelled. I dry all the roots first.
