Do you just order lots of dresses?

There's hardly anywhere to shop in my local town. There's a New Look, River Island, Yours and Primark. That's it!

I'm going to a wedding soon and need a dress (none of mine fit - thanks Mounjaro!)

I've no idea what will suit me now so do I just order loads and return lots??

I'm 47, size 14, big boobs and mum tum. 5 foot 2 if anyone's bought anything fabulous lately?

Really @maddingcrow I buy and return a fair bit to next, I hope they dont close my account! How much stuff did you return?

They sent me an initial letter saying it was 80% I think - and to measure things or try them on in the shop (yeah thanks you definitely always have my size/different brands in store etc). Then I got another one a couple of months later saying it was 90% and they were closing my account.

I LOVE this! Not sure what I'd wear with it for a wedding but may just buy it for another day 🤩

OP, anyone who lives outside of a city will only have the same (or a smaller) choice than you. If I wasn't willing to travel to a city or larger town I'd have Peacocks, Sains and Tesco to choose from.
For a wedding I'd be willing to take an afternoon to go actual shopping. I really only order online for items I'm confident about.

Next has some great dresses in the clearance section. I bought this not so long ago for an event. I have a similar bust size to you and the cut under the bust was really flattering. Such a comfortable dress.

Sorry pic didn’t upload first time.

I don't buy loads and return no, because a large proportion of what gets bought and returned online usually gets thrown into landfill, especially by the fast fashion retailers mentioned here. It's cheaper than remerchandising the item. Very wasteful.

There's a gold shirt also from Yumi: shirt that might be worth ordering at the same time as the skirt and trying them on together

I don't disagree that some companies are putting returns in landfill, but to be honest, I think it's those who's prices are rock, rock bottom- shein, Temu, maybe plt and boohoo.

I also don't disagree with some companies charging for returns, but I do diagree with it if they've refused to add proper, individual sizing information to their listings. If Shein can manage it, with the millions of items they list, I don't see why ASOS doesn't. I've placed one single ASOS order, for branded trainers, since they placed a £4 charge for returns on my account. Their sizes are too inconsistent for me.

I think SHEIN have started putting returns in a UK warehouse and then reselling them. Quite often with a SHEIN order, you’ll get one or two things within a couple of days which are obviously not coming from China.

I think park of my issue is I'm still automatically drawn to plus size things.

I'm still chunky and have a problem tummy but I'm so used to going for stretchy, over sized clothes to hide in.

Someone mentioned Girl In Mind which I've never heard of. I do like some of their dresses so may order some.

I saw a nice chiffon skirt on the FatFace website...it comes in gold and navy

www.fatface.com/style/su575255/an8884

I have that skirt in gold. I absolutely love it. It’s very “swishy” and now I want it in navy too , the store I bought it from only had gold.

Mathsdebator · 04/10/2025 21:59

Thank you to everyone who commented and advised. Whoever recommended Girl in Mind - thank you 😊

I'd never heard of them - i ordered 3 dresses, and I'm keeping 2! One for the wedding and one for a night out 🤩
