Do you store your 'out of season' clothes?

And if so how/where do you store them? My wardrobes are heaving and I think I need to start putting my summer clothes away for the next 8 months or so. I've never found vacuum bags to be hugely successful as they always seem to be a bit rubbish. Any recommendations?

I love these threads. My wardrobe is the same all year round - summer dress, then winter add cardigan

DiscoNights · 13/09/2025 15:35

I have those sturdy clear plastic storage boxes with lids, and I put them in the attic. I always clean and repair my clothes before packing them away.

Farkinhell · 13/09/2025 15:36

Big IKEA zip up bags (or the blue ones with tied handles if I run out) and in the attic it goes. About to swap summer winter this weekend, sadly!

I have numerous really heavy duty laundry bags that I store all of mine & my children’s out of season clothes in. I put them in the loft. I’ve got so many clothes, there is no way to store them all in wardrobes all year round. Oh, and I store shoes seasonally. And bedding.

It’s mostly my winter clothes that go into storage. My wool coat and my winter puffer coat & my heavy jumpers.

I have just put my shorts & very lightweight strappy beach type dresses into storage

I have one and a half standard sized wardrobes. In the half I have coats, and occasion dresses. (Dh’s suits are on the other half of the rail)

In my main wardrobe I keep a current capsule on the rail and shelves, and out of season in boxes on the floor. I’m very strict - if I don’t have space for it, it can’t stay.

I’m reluctant to buy bulky synthetic jumpers that take up space without actually being very warm, and so need extra layers too when a much thinner 100% wool will do the job. It’s made me take really good care of my clothes too.

I have 3 double wardrobes 3 chest of drawers and a coat cupboard, all in the spare bedroom so I keep my clothes out all year.

I’m doing the same but it feels much earlier than I would normally do so.

I've put away my summer clothes today in vacuum bags , bought some new ones which are good quality .
My evening dresses (cruise ship holiday clothes ) are away already as I don;y need them till next August

Excited now to get my winter clothes out but not for a while as they'll all need washed - the bags are good for storage but they have a plastic smell

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 13/09/2025 17:06

Laundry bag, one of those tartan ones with a zip. I’m doing my end of summer declutter now.

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 13/09/2025 17:16

Yes I do a swap over day around April and October where I swap my wardrobes, retaining some mixed season pieces. I store them in clothes bags in the attic.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 13/09/2025 17:24

I store hanging items away each season, but not coats/jackets because we have a huge hall cupboard for those. Last weekend it was summer dresses and skirts out, knitwear in - I dropped some things at the charity shop then hand washed/line dried everything. Stuff like jeans and tees also stay out all year round.

I use vacuum pack bags and then they are stored on top of the wardrobe.

Greenwriter76 · 13/09/2025 17:32

Yes - I have too many clothes so have been doing this for the last few years and it’s helping me to reduce the amount because when I swap over I decide what I’m no longer wearing / haven’t worn in a while & either Vinted / donate / chuck, depending on condition.

I use large storage boxes with lids from
B&M or somewhere that fit under the bed. Ideally I plan to get down to one or two boxes eventually, as many PPs here seem to have.

Sgtmajormummy · 13/09/2025 17:44

Suitcases under each person’s bed or IKEA bags at the bottom of the wardrobe.
One bag for everybody’s beach towels and swimming costumes.

This Winter I’ll probably get rid of a few thick tights. Wide legged trousers are much more comfortable than short skirts and woolly tights. I’ll also check on my “poncho” collection as sweater vests or tabards seem to have taken over.

Some of my nice Winter coats are 20+ years old but still wearable. I’ll be looking for a waterproof dog walking coat this year- maybe in Decathlon. It’s gone from a want to a need.

cupfinalchaos · 13/09/2025 20:49

I put them in the spare room wardrobe.

dudsville · 13/09/2025 21:47

I used to do seasonal swaps, and it always accompanied a big clear out. For me though, I thought this meant that I had too much. I now just have my clothes, for all seasons in the wardrobe, small chest if drawers with an upper cabinet for knitwear. When I did store things it went above my wardrobe, now that's a mostly empty space, but has somethings I don't wear but can't get part with, and my gym clothes. I buy much less frequently, and tend to buy things that I don't tire of now, so the clear out now is infrequently, when I realise I'm not wearing something.

Silverbirchleaf · 16/10/2025 18:04

Doing it today. Summer clothes are now in bin bags. Will get Winter clothes down from loft at weekend and swop them over. Trying (and failing) to clear out excess clothes.

DappledThings · 16/10/2025 18:11

None of us that much difference between clothes for different seasons to make it worthwhile. Actual winter coats get shoved in a cupboard on the landing but other than that it's just a few pairs of shorts that don't get worn year round and a few jumpers. I'd say at least 90% of my wardrobe is worn at least 75% of the year.

Ruthietuthie · 16/10/2025 18:14

Everything I have fits in one wardrobe and one chest of drawers (and I still have plenty of space for more. Neither is crammed). Do you have too much stuff or do you love and wear everything?

staringatthesun · 16/10/2025 18:16

Yes, mine are all stored in cases in the loft and swapped round each season. I usually also have a bit of a charity shop clear out while I'm doing it. I hate cluttered wardrobes.

Probably too many clothes.

The stuff I’ve that I’ve bagged up today includes:

Shorts
Vest tops
Summer dresses - strappy dresses and hot weather dresses, , non -strappy dresses, and party dresses (in various sizes due to weight gain) (I wear dresses a lot when it’s sunny)
Summer jumpers/cardigans - lighter, cotton etc
Linen trousers
T-shirts and some linen blouses - a few, most stay out
Summer jackets

Jeans, sweatshirts, T-shirts, some dresses, work clothes, etc stay out all year around. I guess if you have a uniform at work you may need fewer clothes.

Winter clothes ;
Long sleeve tshirts
Blouses - long sleeve ,
Thicker jumpers
Brown cord trousers
Winter coats

Can’t think what else. That’s part of the fun, re-discovering clothes. However, planning to be strict this year, and trying not to over-cram drawers etc.

Also have a clear out at the change-over point.

Monvelo · 16/10/2025 18:28

In a suitcase in the loft

henlake7 · 16/10/2025 19:08

I put most things in big zip up laundry bags. Luckily my spare bedroom has a wall of fitted wardrobes with a deep shelf all along the top, plenty of room for bags of coats, dresses, etc.
Although TBF alot of my stuff stays out. Summer vests, tops and dresses just get used as more layers. I also have things 2 deep on shelves so will swap out whats in the front.

RaymondPeterfellow · 16/10/2025 20:16

I vaccum pack bulky clothes when summer comes like Oodies, winter coats and winter duvets. I find it so satisfying! Summer clothes are less bulky so find it less of a problem.
