Do you store your 'out of season' clothes?

And if so how/where do you store them? My wardrobes are heaving and I think I need to start putting my summer clothes away for the next 8 months or so. I've never found vacuum bags to be hugely successful as they always seem to be a bit rubbish. Any recommendations?

In Ikea Parkla bags in my ottoman storage bed. They are incredibly cheap at £1.50 each too.

caravancapers · 13/09/2025 06:48

I have lovely wicker baskets under my bed that I store them in, but they always smell a bit musty when I get them out in the spring so gave to wash them. Would a suitcase stop the musty smell do you think? I know vacuum bags would but they are awkward to store

SoftLass · 13/09/2025 06:48

I store in these big laundry bags and put them in the loft. Storing in a suitcase is a genius idea, why did I never think of that?! We have so many suitcases to store, may as well fill them!

Coats stay in the wardrobe all year round though.

Highlighta · 13/09/2025 06:56

The bonus of being single is that I have two wardrobes. A summer one and a winter one.

I do swap them around though, as my usual wardrobe is slightly larger.

I used to vacuum pack the out of season items but they get so creased, I prefer to leave them hanging or folded.

Try adding a few tumble dryer sheets when you pack them away

I have a rail in my bedroom and a rail in the attic and I swap stuff over gradually from August / September onwards. I have a little suitcase up there too.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 13/09/2025 07:07

I have a large covered clothing rail in the loft. Was up there yesterday putting away sun dresses and getting out jumpers. 😩

Sisya · 13/09/2025 07:09

I store mine in a couple of large plastic boxes at the bottom of my wardrobe- they live under where I hang tops so there’s a bit of ‘’dead’ space under there. I used to do the suitcase thing, but I tend to put a few things away and then take a few things out every 3-4 months so I find this is easier. I find packing things away and then seeing them with fresh eyes makes you realise what’s become a bit tired or dated. And like a PP said you forget you’ve got things so unpacking them is a bit like getting new clothes!

I think the trick is to be utterly ruthless about getting rid of things that are worn out or no longer suit you- it makes packing and unpacking everything so much easier when your wardrobe isn’t stuffed to the gills. Otherwise I don’t think I’d bother as I’d find it utterly overwhelming!

I've got plenty of drawers but only half a wardrobe. So a large bottom drawer is used for my winter hanging clothes in summer and summer hanging clothes in winter. I'm a bit in limbo at the moment as I'm going somewhere hot at the end of the month, but by the beginning of October I'll have properly moved everything.

SushiDisco · 13/09/2025 07:16

I have an ottoman bed and keep seasonal clothes in there along with seasonal duvets and spare bedding.

Parker231 · 13/09/2025 07:19

I had a huge clear out before we moved and am lucky enough to have wardrobes big enough to keep clothes for all year around.

Kitchenbattle · 13/09/2025 07:23

No mine just stays in my wardrobe year round. I have a walk in wardrobe though so that helps massively.

Nothungrycat · 13/09/2025 07:38

I have a few plastic storage boxes which live in a cupboard in the attic, and swap some clothes over at the beginning of autumn and again in spring. Like others I find a good way to weed out clothes that I'm not wearing - basically if I'm putting something away that I haven't worn all summer then it's time to get rid of it!

Paetina · 13/09/2025 07:44

I now do a limited swap over as I've thinned out my wardrobe so much in the last few years. A large clear pastic box sits in the bottom of my wardrobe - it holds thicker jumpers in summer and linen/light cotton dresses and trousers in winter.

I did the swap over yesterday. It took a couple of hours as I tried on all my autumn/winter clothes on (from box & already out). If I'm not excited about/looking forward to wearing anything, it gets weeded out for selling/charity.

Meadowfinch · 13/09/2025 07:50

I have a large old fashioned, chest of drawers and a wardrobe.

Summer clothes are cleaned, most things are folded and put away in drawers. Structured stuff put to the left in the wardrobe.

I have drawers with cooler weather clothes. Wool sweaters are sealed in plastic over the summer. They'll be coming out next month.

These ruin clothes if left in storage with them, especially woollens.

GoodG0dWoman · 13/09/2025 12:32

Yes, out of season stuff goes in a suitcase on top of my wardrobe and shoes in a storage box under my bed. Not ideal, but have to use the space I’ve got!

I’ve just put all my summer dresses and shoes away and taken out jumpers and winter dresses. I use the seasonal change as a chance to sort my wardrobe out, charity shop/vinted stuff I no longer like and see what I need to buy.

Makemineacosmo · 13/09/2025 14:44

I need to think my wardrobe out and get some stuff on Vinted or to the charity shop, I have far toi many clothes and I really don't need them all. My wardrobes are so rammed I end up just wearing the same stuff. Have ordered some heavy duty packing cubes so will hopefully get it sorted in the next week or so. I might find a few jumpers I forgot I had!

No, as most items go through the seasons. Holiday clothes that I wouldn’t wear during the winter are in the holiday suitcases.

Comefromaway · 13/09/2025 14:48

Yes, I’ve got a lift up ottoman bed & they go in there along with the spare bedding.

Silverbirchleaf · 13/09/2025 14:49

Mine go in bin bags in the loft. Always amazed how many bin bags they fill.

I like those Lakeland bags listed above.

tostaky · 13/09/2025 15:01

I am lucky that i can fit a clothes rack under the eaves in the loft. I also have several bags of seasonal clothes and shoes.
this morning with DP we did two piles: one for the charity shop and one for storage, it is a good feeling.

RaraRachael · 13/09/2025 15:16

I store mine in big plastic boxes under the beds.
I used to put them up the loft but got fed up of the faff of doing it.

GingerPaste · 13/09/2025 15:21

I’ve just put mine away. My bed is high enough to get sizeable boxes underneath, so I store most of my out of season clothes and shoes that way.
