Help! Skirt styles for 2025..

Showed my teenage daughter some skirts that I’d liked on Vinted and her response was ‘nice but very 2000s’. I’ve lost a bit of weight and seem to have unknowingly returned to exactly the style I was wearing when I was that size last…
What style in skirts is a bit more now but would work on a short, size 14 50+ lady.
She did say that I should just wear what makes me happy but I’m not sure what that is any more.

Congrats on your weight loss!

What is the style you were looking at that is apparently so unfashionable to your teen?

I’m absolutely no expert but when I go to Zara or Whistles or Mango website the skirts all seem to be: very short either straight or some pleats/kilt styles. Chunkier fabrics on the short skirts.

Or they’re long with more volume. Some midi knit skirts too.

Colours are muted and neutral.

Nothing seems to be knee length, A line, patterned. Occasional floral short floppy type skirt.

Of course there is then the eternally complicated issue of winter footwear and skirts…..

Perhaps you could have a look at these ‘new in’ styles online to see what’s a bit more current, and then maybe try some on to see what’s suits your new figure before hunting down the right items on Vinted.

The young ladies are wearing straight longer skirts but am starting to see these rise to under the knee than midi now.
The 20s seem to be experimenting with A line 😮. Outside a work setting, there is lots and lots of denim..
Yes people, we are back to the 90s!

Universityconfused · 07/09/2025 09:30

I loved white stuff skirts in the 2000s as I liked the knee length/ above knee length but not too short style - I liked all the patterns too but it does feel a bit dated.
I think probably a trip to the real shops is probably the answer but you’re definitely right about shoes/ boots etc … perhaps I’ll stick to trousers!

I go to John Lewis and put everything I fancy in my basket. I did this yesterday and had 15 items 😂

I only buy something if when I try it in I say STUNNING to myself. It rarely happens but it did with two items so I was pleased with that

edited to say it's all about the feelings for me and trying different things. I am surprised with what i end up buying

myladyjane · 07/09/2025 10:12

I find teen daughters a bit tricky to navigate. I own one who is a bit of a fashion fiend and has a very good eye for what suits people (she has picked out some amazing stuff for her friends, me and my mum). But she also is 16 and understandably has a 16 year old view of what is on trend.

i do tend to look in insta for ideas and also do what others suggest and look at what is for sale in shops i like which has just come in.

NOTANUM · 07/09/2025 10:33

Also when early teens they want their mum to look COMPLETELY different to them and dress like a nun but they quickly change and like having a well dressed mum. So it is often best to ignore them.
Well done on the weight loss!

Universityconfused · 07/09/2025 10:50

Agreed about teenage daughters! It’s just that getting dressed has become fun again after a few years of post- divorce weight gain/ peri-menopause …. It’s just trying work out what I want to wear rather than what will fit and make me blend into the background all the same.

Pencil skirts apparently are the new thing! Ankle length, or knee length. My information is from this month's Stylist magazine.

jamnpancakes · 07/09/2025 10:56

What are these skirts for ? Work? Leisure?

Floisme · 07/09/2025 11:13

Someone linked an article yesterday that went through about 10 skirt trends. I can't find it now but, from memory, it included kilts - especially mini and knee length - pencil, A Line, and voluminous midis (New Look style). I was surprised at how interesting they looked given that none of them were exactly original and I immediately wanted at least half of them (I think I might be over trousers for the time being!). Anyway if I find that article I'll come back and post it.

Newmeagain · 07/09/2025 11:28

I think skirts can be tricky, particularly in winter.

really long skirts and dresses look odd to me unless you wear either a very long coat or a cropped coat.

Short skirts with thick tights can work well but sadly I just don’t feel comfortable with that look anymore. Will leave that one to my dd.

Patterned skirts from that era did look dated this summer. I'm hoping I'll be able to carry it off for winter. I've got two that I absolutely love and have re-bought the coordinating jumper/cardigan from Vinted as I've worn my originals out. I think if I swap from shoes to boots I might be ok.

Mainly work but would nice to have some options for going out etc as I mostly seem to wear jeans outside of work. My workplace is fairly casual but I feel like experimenting a bit…

In theory I like the look of these wool knee length skirts from Boden (nice to see some wool content) but in practice they just look a bit wrong somehow - is it the length, or the shape?

Doggymummar · 07/09/2025 14:25

I love a jumper dress, got a black one one today from Lauren Ralph Lauren with black opaque tights. I also bought one from Monsoon in wool with flamenco sleeves and I have a vintage cream one too. I don't find it easy to put outfits together so dresses and knee boots will take me through to next spring.

BettyTurpinPies · 07/09/2025 14:49

@Newmeagain , It looks a bit like school uniform. The green is probably the best of the bunch.

One of the schools here has that style of skirt as part of the uniform. The other school is either a black skirt or trousers. The trend is to wear the skirt very short and blazers are oversized. From behind, it looks quite strange.

YanTanTetheraPetheraBumfitt · 07/09/2025 14:54

I am seeing a lot of just under the knee length skirts. So like this but less see through 😁

willowstar · 07/09/2025 15:09

@Newmeagain agree, something isn't quite right about those Boden skirts. They are neither here nor there. Not mini but not knee length and they seem too big on the models. I love kilts and mini kilts but don't feel tempted by these at all

Floisme · 07/09/2025 15:19

I agree the Boden skirt looks off. I think it would look better if it were either shorter or longer or, if you want that length, a more pronounced A-line.

I often use the Me and Em website as a guide. I rarely buy it new because it's
£££ now but I do think they're very canny at interpreting trends for grown ups. These are their new skirts, e.g. there's a pleated check one that's below the knee and also a tweed mini.

They are not hanging right, makes them look really cheap which is ironic when you see the price. Pleating or kilts require a lot of fabric, and on these, the fabric has been skimped.

Newmeagain · 07/09/2025 16:07

Yes, you are all right about the Boden skirt looking like a badly fitting school skirt. Such a pity really.

i like this Me&Em skirt but like a lot of their stuff it’s made for someone really tall. That’s what i don’t really understand about their stuff. it looks very long even on the tall model. I am a shortie but the average U.K. woman is 10 cm shorter than the model…

BettyTurpinPies · 07/09/2025 16:12

@Floisme , I like the length and despite generally not liking A-line, I like the shape, but agree with @DelphiniumBlue that they look a bit cheap because they're not hanging right.

It doesn't look right with the boots.

I like that style but obviously would prefer a non- see through version!
