Still using my fingers for foundation

I've always applied foundation with fingers, but judging by everyone on the tube and social media, I'm the only one.

Is using a sponge or brush really that much better - which is best and any particular recommendations?

I still use my fingers, seems to work fine! Also use my fingers for eyeshadow (when I bother) 🤷🏼‍♀️

Onionringsforbreakfast · 06/09/2025 12:07

I use fingers too

UpToonGirl · 06/09/2025 12:10

I go through different phases, sometimes some foundations are better with fingers, some with brushes. Remember people on YT will use as many items as possible so they can do more links!

I use my fingers too. It’s the best way.

but fingers are free so not approved of by social media.

my teens are appalled but they are deep in the grip of all the SM types and their many many brushes.

SisterTeatime · 06/09/2025 12:13

Sometimes fingers, but sometimes a kabuki brush if I am using slightly more product. Fingers are really good for undereye highlighter as I have very warm fingers that seem to melt the product in very well.

Washing brushes is a faff so I try to minimise brush use.

wiminny · 06/09/2025 12:16

I'm a minimalist re make up. I only use a light powder based foundation for covering the little patch of red veins on one cheek, but have to do the whole face lol or I'd look odd (odder than normal that is!). A stubby fat brush is great for me, takes me about twenty seconds, and if I'm feeling energetic, I'll use a bit of glowy blusher - same brush. Done and dusted. No eye make up, brows, contours or anything like that, I'd look like a clown. But hey, each to their own I say!

So no, I don't use fingers since I use powder based stuff.

I'm also thinking the people on the tube use a sponge/brush as it's easier with one hand and less mucky

'Fingers are free' 😂

A damp sponge is so so so much better. I hate brushes though. , they never make the finish from my foundations look nice.

the problem with fingers too is it’s not as clean, so can lead to more spots ect.

Eggbaps · 06/09/2025 14:26

Fingers are more hygienic and you don't waste half the product.

PashaMinaMio · 06/09/2025 14:30

I watched a young woman at the gym changing rooms using a brush. We had a conversation about it because I’ve always used my fingers.

I bought a brush and a couple of other brushes for concealer, eye shadow etc. I will never go back to using my fingers. The foundation brush in particular makes getting the product evenly spread so much easier. Love it.

MajesticWhine · 06/09/2025 14:34

I use fingers. I don’t have time to be faffing around with brushes or sponges. And surely they would need washing all the time? I can wash my hands very quickly so I don’t buy the not as clean argument.

Gowlett · 06/09/2025 14:42

I like to rub it into my skin rather than onto my skin, so I mix a bit of foundation / highlighter / tan into a blob of moisturiser & apply. With powder, I use a kabuki brush all over my face, nose first.

Clean hands will be tons cleaner than a brush!

LavenderHaze04 · 06/09/2025 15:05

Second a damp sponge, it's a game-changer. I go for a very natural, minimalist look and a sponge just helps any foundation/concealer melt into the skin and look seamless. And brushes for everything else. You can honestly get away with just a couple (don't need to buy loads and loads!) but it really makes a difference imo.

Trundlebugglet · 06/09/2025 15:17

iM a finger person too. I bought the little padded things but never seem to use them tbh, i think maybe theres a knack i dont know about

ginasevern · 06/09/2025 15:27

I still use my fingers, also to apply blusher and eye shadow (which tbf I rarely ever use these days). I must admit the foundation gets under my quite long finger nails but at my grand old age I'm not likely to change.

Edited to say that obviously I thoroughly wash my hands and under my nails once I've finished!

Reminds me of the time I had to write something important at a new job and i had just touched up my makeup in the bathroom and i ended up smudging it all over and had to get a new form from the manager looking like an idiot ha

Oh I've done that before now!

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 06/09/2025 15:36

I use a kabuki brush to apply, and then a damp sponge for blending. I find fingers makes the coverage too heavy.

GameOfJones · 06/09/2025 16:06

Damp sponge all the way. I think it helps blend and blur everything together. I just buy a couple of cheap ones at a time and then I have one spare whilst the other one is drying out after I've washed it (once a week or so.)

Fingers will work really well so no need to use any tools but I do my make-up last and don't want to have to go and wash my hands again or risk touching things with foundation on my hands.

Onlythecrumbliest · 06/09/2025 16:48

I use fingers - the dab all over then join the dots method.😅

I can't be bothered with brushes and sponges. Eye shadow is also fingers.

Betsylee · 06/09/2025 17:28

I have a shower in the morning and then apply foundation with my fingers, perfect, so easy!
I have tried the sponge egg shaped applicators but feel they need washing after a few days, and they never wash well! It's just a SM thing to make us buy a load of sponges, brushes etc which are less hygienic and bad for the environment! That's my view!

Trundlebugglet · 06/09/2025 20:43

ginasevern · 06/09/2025 15:30

To be honest I'm surprised it was a one off for me. But at the worst possible time!

Appalonia · 06/09/2025 20:54

I've tried brushes and sponges but all I've noticed is they waste a lot of the foundation. I can't say I've noticed that much difference tbh. I'm sure it's just make up artists who are pushing this as they don't want to touch their client's faces. Fingers forever!😂
