Still using my fingers for foundation

cakedup · 06/09/2025 11:56

I've always applied foundation with fingers, but judging by everyone on the tube and social media, I'm the only one.

Is using a sponge or brush really that much better - which is best and any particular recommendations?

I like to rub it into my skin rather than onto my skin, so I mix a bit of foundation / highlighter / tan into a blob of moisturiser & apply. With powder, I use a kabuki brush all over my face, nose first.

You SO need to film this and post it online!

mdinbc · 06/09/2025 21:01

Fingers here as well. Probably more hygienic than either brush or sponge since I have just finished washing face, so hands are clean.

ImthatBoleyngirl · 06/09/2025 21:02

Brushes and beauty blenders are so much quicker and easier than fingers. If you buy decent brushes they last for a while and don't soak up the product. I had to use my fingers a few months ago and the application was so much worse than with brushes, it took me longer and was streaky.

pizzaHeart · 06/09/2025 21:10

Fingers always but brushes for blusher and eye shadows

dudsville · 06/09/2025 22:34

I remember watching a famous make up artist recommend using fingers, I can't recommend her name but she did the models on big name catwalks back in the day. I tried it because I found it a faff using sponges and brushes and I could never get them really clean, and I hated the product waste and environmental impact. I think using my hands is really easy, but I'm only going for a light natural look to even my rosacea skin tone, and it's the only makeup i wear. I put it on in the same way I would a face cream, immediately my face cream, so that my hands are still coated in a bit of moisturiser.

ElixirOfLife · 06/09/2025 23:22

Lisa Eldridge usually recommends using finger tips for applying foundation. She knows what she’s on about so I’m sticking to it. Less faff too!

I use my fingers too. It’s the best way.

but fingers are free so not approved of by social media.

my teens are appalled but they are deep in the grip of all the SM types and their many many brushes.

You can’t market fingers!

ElixirOfLife · 06/09/2025 23:24

@dudsville sorry just read your post. Assume we are saying the same.

honeyfox · 06/09/2025 23:26

I generally use my fingers but if going out or have more time I use a damp sponge. It gives a really nice finish.

Londog · 06/09/2025 23:26

I use the palms of my hands lol - like I’m washing my face - nice even coverage - my adult dd goes mad 🤣🥸

bendmeoverbackwards · 07/09/2025 00:35

I’ve never mastered flawless foundation application. I’ve always used my fingers. If you’re in the damp sponge brigade, what sort of sponge?

That’s exactly what I do. Rub it all together, then rub it in.

NewbieSM · 07/09/2025 02:03

I use my fingers for initial application and then a damp sponge to blend it all in. Sorry but just using your hands and rubbing it in looks patchy as hell

VanillaImpulse · 07/09/2025 02:05

Sponges just soak up loads of foundation so it’s really wasteful

Gcsunnyside23 · 07/09/2025 02:12

I think it depends on the product too, I usually use my fingers with foundation as I think the heat from your hands makes it spread better 😆 but recently used the bperfect tinted moisturizer which is a light foundation and the brush was better to spread it but think it was the texture wirked better. V.good product btw. Weirdly I use a sounds for my concealer. I think sometimes brushes make my make up cakey.

GarlicPint · 07/09/2025 02:27

It might depend on the type of makeup you're applying. The amount of coverage that fashionable young women apply is gobsmacking to me - I'd not seen this since Pan Stick in the 1960s! Pan Stick was applied with a damp sponge, it had the texture of cake icing.

So I'm usually applying something of a sheer nature, and it doesn't make any difference whether I use fingers, a sponge or brushes. I have all three (!) but mostly opt for the fingers. If you're layering all different kinds of thick stuff, with the accompanying need to blend and merge without getting uneven globs or ridges of product, you need the proper tools.

My Biba phase and most of the 1980s called for strongly-pigmented powders, ideally creating air-brushed effects over a light foundation. I had a range of brushes for that - one girl I knew, who always looked amazing, actually used an artist's air brush but that was a step too far for me!

A damp sponge is so so so much better. I hate brushes though. , they never make the finish from my foundations look nice.

the problem with fingers too is it’s not as clean, so can lead to more spots ect.

How can the fingers of a washed hand be less hygienic than a sponge or whatever that has been used many times?
Don't get this, my DD said the same, Gross was her words, but my washed hands are way cleaner than anything she uses

Most spots are hormonal though and I always wash my hands before applying any make up.

I’ve been a beauty consultant for Clinique and then Chanel most of my life and I’ve always used my fingers. It’s how they used to train us to apply it too as it warms the particles and makes it easier to blend. Brushes and sponges are very much a “new” thing and I don’t think they work as well.

SirChenjins · 07/09/2025 14:15

I use a cheap as chips kabuki brush from Primark - squeeze a bit straight onto the brush and rub it in. Gives a much better and more coverage than my fingers, and it's quicker - I am a convert.

Just a beauty blender sponge. Any will do and they're available everywhere. Boots or Superdrug will have them, probably supermarkets too but I tend to pick them up in TK Maxx. Buy a couple so one can be used while the other is drying out after washing it.

Use it damp to stop the sponge from just soaking up foundation.
