Hairdresser costs £168?!

ManualNeeded · 30/08/2025 15:24

I have just been charged £168 for my regrowth colour. No cut. The hairdresser explained the cost was high as it had to cover the toner, a treatment and a blow dry. She is a creative director level but the 16 year old trainee did the toner, treatment and hair wash.

i am not in london so I would not expect the cost to be so high. Also I go every 4 weeks as I have rapidly growing hair and have been totally grey for many years. So I can’t afford this.

I don’t know if she is taking liberties and thinking I will fork out for all these additional things (I did the k18 at home, otherwise it would have been nearly £200!). Or if this is the cost nowadays if you go to an experienced hairdresser.

grateful for any advice. As I feel a bit of a fool and I don’t know whether I can trust the hairdresser (if she is just adding costs on) or if this is standard. She does a good blow dry but the colour isn’t anything amazing and I have purchased all the extra things she has suggested (various shampoos, conditioners, k18, glowwa, wella shape me)

any advice would be so helpful! Even just to say ‘yes thats to be expected from a director level person. And if so o light rotate between her and a less experienced person.

thank you.

Actually I don't think it's excessive if it's the salon director who is doing your hair. It's not cheap by any means, but not off the scale either, even for outside London IMO.

Absurd prices - particularly without a cut! Wouldn’t pay anywhere near that in London! 80 pounds for cut and colour last time I did it.

Was that in the 80s??
Please tell me where in London you get a cut and colour for £80

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 31/08/2025 21:55

Bonkers! I've pay £54 for roots, cut and blow dry. The hairdresser has 35 years experience. I go every four weeks which means my hair is in good condition.

Likaom · 31/08/2025 22:07

If you go every few weeks then you should defo challenge this price hike and get then to explain, maybe there was a mistake? I’d go elsewhere unless this is the only place that does your hair the way you like it. Lots of amazing stylists now work from home as the overheads on salons “hire a chair” are too much. Ask on FB for recommendations.

I mean if your going to a hairdresser with 'creative director' as their title I would suggest that would be a expensive salon.

If the colour isn't that impressive I would suggest moving.

I agree. Years ago I got caught the same with the junior director doing my cut and colour because my normal stylist was off sick. I was charged almost double.😳
Absolute rip off, I never went back there and found a cheaper and better salon elsewhere.

That is insanity. I go to an upscale city centre salon in the middle of Leeds every four weeks for root growth and toner from a stylist who wins national awards. I pay £50 if no cut. I'd say you have been royally ripped off

Which salon is this please??xxx

Endorewitch · 31/08/2025 23:57

I live in Surrey. Which is expensive. I pay £85 for the same treatment. I think you are paying for the title Creative Director. What is a CD anyhow?A stylist like any other hairdresser.
There will be other cheaper ones around for sure. They all have the same training.

Sallyssn · 01/09/2025 01:47

I use e salon and online colour expert.
I costs me £27 evey 6 weeks.
Best thing g I ever did for my hair.

IsThistheMiddleofNowhere · 01/09/2025 06:06

I think that's outrageous. I work with fully qualified architects whose hourly charge out rate is less than that

Restlessinthenorth · 01/09/2025 07:53

@herewegoagain432 it's Tint on Notth Street. They have just opened a small branch also by the station. My stylist isn't taking on new clients at the moment but I'm sure others there will be. I like the vibe much more than other places in town like Sassoon and find them to be excellent. I'm an every four weeks gal! Obviously it's more expensive when I have full colour/cut etc, but my monthly roots appointment is incredibly good value

3girlsmyworld · 01/09/2025 10:05

This is in Essex. 3 years ago, I went to a new-ish salon.
I had my roots high-lighted with foils (half head) and a blow dry. It was.my birthday that day, so I spent all of my birthday money and added some on top. It's was around £160. I haven't been back

StarCourt · 01/09/2025 11:12

That sounds OTT, Last week I paid £160 for DD to go from purple to pink ombré hair inc conditioning treatment. cut blow dry and straightening

madaboutpurple · 01/09/2025 11:29

That seems very expensive to me I am N.W . based I would not spend as much on my hair..

jamnpancakes · 01/09/2025 12:32

It really is irrelevant as to what people are willing to pay for their hair. It is about what is normal in certain types of salons and locations according to the expertise of the hairdresser.

That's very cheap.

OP, I pay about £120 for roots (about same colour as natural hair), toner, trim and blow dry. Local suburban town near a big city. The cut and blow dry it's only £20-£25 of that. I used to kill my hair with home dies and it has made a difference to the state of my hair but it's eye watering expensive. I do understand that you don't pay for just the service, but also their rental of the chair, products, insurance, proportion of holiday and sick pay, I assume perhaps the apprentices/assistant roles, etc. But it doesn't make it any manageable.

Perhaps ask her if you could move to another team member of a lower rank, as it's becoming an unaffordable expense. Perhaps she might offer a discount, if available, or at least be there to supervise and advice whoever takes you.

doglover90 · 01/09/2025 18:33

Genuine question, why would anyone pay so much for a toner? Maybe it's because my hair is colour damaged but I find that it washes out within a couple of weeks!

I’m a self employed hairdresser north east. I charge 31 for a root regrowth and 25 for a blowdry. A toner is £10 and a cut is 32. Max you would pay is £73 if you had full works.

she’s mega over charged you there. Absolute greeed

GofE · 02/09/2025 16:37

£307 just paid for tint highlights, no cut or finish. London, nice salon, and i trust them so happy to pay the price tbh.

ManualNeeded · 30/08/2025 16:24

Thanks so much for sharing all your experiences. The consensus is this is way too high (and I can’t afford it anyway!). But I have looked at websites and they all seem to add on costs easily eg toner is an extra £33 , a blowdry is £49 (you’d think that would be included when they do your colour! And I’m not evening going anyway- maybe I should just walk out with wet hair and save the £49!). I’m inspired to do my own, but it was pretty bad when I did it myself during Covid ! Anyway I’ll shop around; thx again for the different perspectives.

Mine is shockingly expensive as well. I didn’t realise that I could get just the hairline regrowth for half the price - so I do that now and alternate with regrowth and brush through to the ends every other time (try to stretch to 8 weeks)

I never get a blow dry (£48) or even a ‘blast dry (£15) - even when I get it cut (3 x year) - I am bold as brass and walk out of the posh salon with wet hair and drive home. I spend over £1000 a year there and that’s trying to keep the costs right down - I also never tip. The owner is always telling me about her £800 shoes, new kitchen etc - good luck to her - she works hard - but so do I!!

Chattanoogachoo · 05/04/2026 13:13

On a different note,I got a full car service last week for £195.
Hairdressers may have high costs etc but those are silly prices and I wouldn't pay them. You know how many hours you and your dh had to work for that money and it's just too much.

Bunny65 · 05/04/2026 17:41

Shop around, you don't need to pay that much unless you think the final effect is worth it. I live in London and I don't pay that although I easily could be charged that or more at certain places.

JMAngel1 · 05/04/2026 21:05

Switch your hairdresser.
Find one that works from home - mine works from a salon converted from her garage and average price for root tint, toner and hair cut is £50. She’s really skilled as well as worked as a creative stylist in her last salon before opening up on her own.
