Hairdresser costs £168?!

ManualNeeded · 30/08/2025 15:24

I have just been charged £168 for my regrowth colour. No cut. The hairdresser explained the cost was high as it had to cover the toner, a treatment and a blow dry. She is a creative director level but the 16 year old trainee did the toner, treatment and hair wash.

i am not in london so I would not expect the cost to be so high. Also I go every 4 weeks as I have rapidly growing hair and have been totally grey for many years. So I can’t afford this.

I don’t know if she is taking liberties and thinking I will fork out for all these additional things (I did the k18 at home, otherwise it would have been nearly £200!). Or if this is the cost nowadays if you go to an experienced hairdresser.

grateful for any advice. As I feel a bit of a fool and I don’t know whether I can trust the hairdresser (if she is just adding costs on) or if this is standard. She does a good blow dry but the colour isn’t anything amazing and I have purchased all the extra things she has suggested (various shampoos, conditioners, k18, glowwa, wella shape me)

any advice would be so helpful! Even just to say ‘yes thats to be expected from a director level person. And if so o light rotate between her and a less experienced person.

thank you.

In the north east your talking £60 upwards, see out your local college, model days or checkmprices of mobile hairdressers or smaller independents, its not rocket science x

That is expensive - and I live in London. You can buy a root touch-up like Colour Wow which would mean you didn't have to go quite so often. Look around online for hairdressers available in your area (and read the reviews), Prices vary but you will get a better deal somewhere that isn't part of a big chain. And for that sort of money you should definitely get a cut as well.

Sorry, wasn't clear. It was multiple bottles of the powder and it's permanent hair colour. It lasts a good while.

Tipeetommeey · 31/08/2025 18:53

I paid £68 for a root touch up yesteday, no blow dry, nothing else. I go every 4 weeks and I’ve now stopped the blowdry as another 35-40 on top of roots is ridiculous. It’s now over £120 for a cut and blowdry but my hairdresser is probably the best cutter I have ever had in my life, properly trained in the west end 30 years ago. And highlight which I do twice a year leave me with no change from £220

No it's my fault - I didn't mean to make it look like I was replying to your particular post and then I couldn't seem to delete it. I meant to reply generally that I thought the hairdresser was quite expensive. Your suggestion was very reasonable.

Daftypants · 31/08/2025 18:54

Oh that does sound a lot ££.
The last time I had mine done it was touch up of colour ,roots , take through to ends last few minutes.
Wash ,cut and finish was just under £100

Honestly I think the cost of hairdressing has gone through the roof! It’s crazy. Yes I know you’re paying for someone’s experience but I do think it shouldn’t be THAT much!

To be fair it’s expensive because the product has gone up alongside overheads and min wage and NI it’s just economics but it is a fortune.

Itsnottheheatitsthehumidity · 31/08/2025 18:59

... which is why I gave up highlights, dyes, all that and went grey about 10 years ago. It's around £200 for a cut, colour and blow dry where I am in (fairly posh) SE London. Fudge rhat. I get a hair cut every six months and I begrudge the £80 for that.

m00rfarm · 31/08/2025 19:04

Don't dye your own. It is to easy to tell when people dye their own hair - it is so obvious. Someone said to me the other day how lucky I was not to have to colour my hair (I am 62 and have been grey for 20 years) - I visit my hairdresser every 5 weeks and he just does the roots. You don't have to have a blow dry - they can just dry it with the dryer. But it does sound as though you may have been charged for a cut as well? I would check the pricing and tell them you would be coming every 5 weeks (or however often) but the price is too high and what can you leave out to make it more affordable.

TheLemonLemur · 31/08/2025 19:14

I pay half that for highlight, roots cut and blow dry in a city centre with a hairdresser that has over 20 years experience

Greyandproud · 31/08/2025 19:16

Just be authentic. Let it be its own colour and love it.
The fortune saved on colouring pays for a fantastic cut. Condition is better too
I’ve never had so many people admire my hair until I stopped paying for the colour.
Save your money and enjoy the compliments.

Absurd price, I find they are also cheeky in adding in blowdrys and treatments when not asked for, I’m pretty happy to do my own treatments and walk out of the hairdresser with damp hair if it saves me £60

I do my roots at home with professional quality Alfaparf dyes I buy online, saves me a fortune and plenty of tutorials online….doing roots is not rocket science, anyone can do it

Not everyone wants to go grey and It also doesn’t suit everyone

weirdoboelady · 31/08/2025 19:30

If it helps, I have mystery shopped a LOT of hairdressers in my time.

Sadly, I am talking about cut and blow dry rather than colouring. However, I found absolutely NO correlation between price and result. Honestly I found that Supercuts was one of the very best (and I shopped some VERY upmarket salons). I doubt that this ((lack of) correlation) changes for colour appointments instead of cut and BD, unless a VERY skilled colourist is involved.

BewilderedPiskie · 31/08/2025 19:37

Bloody hell, Ken!!

DeftLemonSnail · 31/08/2025 19:38

I'm in Oxfordshire and pay £148 for full head highlights (slightly below shoulders), toner, trim and blow dry. That sounds like a lot :(

RoverReturn · 31/08/2025 19:42

I'm in the south east and paid £57 for regrowth being coloured last time. I did not have the full blow dry (not just to save money, I don't want it).

Blingismything · 31/08/2025 19:44

Yes, this is about the price at my very hipster salon. Not in London but all ‘London trained’

TaterTots68 · 31/08/2025 20:02

The salon I go to charges from £60 for roots and from £80 for full head. I pay £20 for a dry trim and colour it myself.

Dutchhouse14 · 31/08/2025 20:07

In Kent I pay similar for a colour cut and blow dry, although appreciate you didn't have the cut, was it a posh/ trendy hairdressers in middle of town/city?
You can undoubtedly get cheaper elsewhere but it's not a totally unheard of price.
If its your first appointment for this then they or you should have confirmed cost before appt.
But yes hairdressers are expensive

Booksandwine80 · 31/08/2025 20:07

CoralOP · 30/08/2025 16:14

I dye my own hair, box dye, takes half an hour!
Last time I went for a cut the girl was asking who my colourist was because it was so good....er me and 'garnier rich brown number 64' 😆😆
I get pretty baffled when people say they can't dye their own hair(apart from blond), it's so easy.

I have horrendous allergies to box dyes so have to pay for mine to be done.

Marieb19 · 31/08/2025 20:11

I can't understand how they can charge anything like that for a blow dry, which lasts the day. I would be tempted to reevaluate my colour. I now go for high and low lights, which look more natural and I'm not having roots retouched every few weeks.

MaddestGranny · 31/08/2025 20:33

Well, @ManualNeeded , it's up to you, of course.
What I notice, with more favour, about people's hair, is the condition and the cut.
I notice people - here & there, on the bus, in the supermarket, on the street - with really bad colour-jobs, with obviously dyed colour which doesn't match their face, etc. I wonder: why bother? it looks awful.
I'd say: if you have money to spend on your hair, spend it on having it cut well every now and then. Meanwhile, spend your money on best hair-conditioning products and care/treatments.

Summerhut2025 · 31/08/2025 20:46

Total greed!
i pay £98 for a cut and colour at what I would say is a more affluent town than where I live which I think is way too much however in the town where I live I would pay less but they leave the bleach on too long and my hair snaps so I feel stuck with the good one I found. But I think £60 max £80 should be the cost. No way would I pay £168 and other people shouldn’t.

BunnyVV · 31/08/2025 20:46

My wonderful hairdresser comes to my house and just does my colour. I don’t need cut and blow-dry every time. I think you should look for a mobile hairdresser near your town via Instagram.

Hairshare · 31/08/2025 20:51

Hairdressers can charge what they like but you don’t have to go there again. Sounds very expensive.
