Burgundy shirts for corporate work environment

Hi,

I wondered if I could ask for a bit of advice?

My DH works in a big corporate company at higher professional level. Neither of us has any clue about clothes.

He normally wears burgundy shirts with burgundy buttons, and navy shirts with navy buttons.

The clothes in the wardrobe have suddenly all got musty smelling and I can't sort out the smell.

I managed to buy new navy shirts, but I can't find nice burgundy shirts with burgundy buttons anywhere. All the burgundy shirts have white buttons.

I did buy some from a company called Uneek, but they are not nice quality and I can't send him to work in them really.

I wondered if you might know of any kind of posh shops which would make nice burgundy shirts like this? I only know about places like Next and M&S and they just don't have the right thing. They used to always have them.

I looked in the fancy gents tailor in town and their shirts are £200 which is a bit steep. We could manage £50.

The dry cleaner said I should hang the clothes in the sun to get rid of the musty smell but I will need to wait until next year for that now.

Thanks!

It won’t take much sun. A dry day will probably be sufficient.

Try lands end.

SocksNStuff · 27/08/2025 08:10

That's odd. I wrote M&S in normal text and it turned into a link.

Thanks, I'll stick them out today then.

I'll look at lands end, thanks.

Nothing in Lands End.

No worries hanging them out for weeks yet, but if that doesn’t work, just buy the high street shirts and change the buttons.

Mumsnet automatically turn m&s and John Lewis into links.

I don't know what specific shirts they have, but Charles Tyrwhitt have been a great find here this year, and you can get them for £30-40 each if you hunt around for codes. Lovely quality.

Nitgel · 27/08/2025 08:13

Cos seem to have a lovely.of burgundy. Maybe they have something

Violetparis · 27/08/2025 08:14

Try Debenhams online.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 27/08/2025 08:15

Why isn't your husband buying his own shirts? I can't imagine my DH choosing and buying my clothes

Just checked and no burgundy at the minute, but worth checking out as autumn rolls in. They have navy with navy buttons in a couple of styles though.

Go to TM Lewis or Charles Tywford and but shirts - does he want to be the burgundy shirt guy? If he's not bothered just buy some he likes of failing that what other people are wearing. They have lots of fits and sleeve lengths. Shop staff will measure and guide for size.

Wash existing shirts in bio powder - add a little vinegar to fabric softener drawer if you want and ideally hang outside. I don't really understand how this can be an issue to be honest. If his shirts smell musty the rest of your washing probably does too, you might be a little nose blind to it now, so you need to ensure it's not taking too long to dry.

It's okay, I'm not nose blind. Really very definitely the opposite. I could get a job as a police sniffer dog.

I have done that now. I bought four in burgundy and four in navy. They look perfect. Thank you very much.

btw I had no idea that Debenhams still existed online. That's where we used to buy them but the shop is gone.

Does it seem odd to you that the model is in exactly the same position in the different colours of shirts? Did they just photoshop the colours onto him?

Have you ordered from Ashford England, @RiverRed? There is a nice coat on there. But I've never come across them before.

Almost certainly.

Hi - no, just did a quick Google for what the OP was after and they came up.

SocksNStuff · 27/08/2025 20:11

I will report back on what they are like when they arrive.

Hi,

I wondered if I might come and report back on this thread?

I ordered shirts from Ashford of London on the 27th August as shown upthread.

I just got the tracker email today (19 days later) to say that they will arrive soon.

They had to go through customs to get here to the UK, and the registered address of the company seems to be in Germany. I'm not sure if they are coming from Germany though, because there is no indication in the tracking of which country they are coming from.

It's quite mysterious.

I will report back when they arrive.

Hi,

I wondered if I might report back about the shirts from Ashford of London?

They're quite mysterious.

The tracker page says that they were posted on the 30th August, and they did finally arrive on the 17th September. The tracker says they went through customs on the way here, but nothing about what country they came from.

When they arrived, they had a Royal Mail 48 postage label on them, implying that they were posted two days ago in the UK. The return address on the label is "Online seller, Unit 1, Heathrow".

The shirts were £50 each but arrived quite cheaply packaged as in the attached photo.

The burgundy shirts are indeed sort of burgundy, but they have a strong pink tint so more a colour for a lady to wear. I took a photo and attached it. It's pretty good as a representation of the colour. The fabric is very thin, soft and floaty, like a silk ladies' blouse.

The label says they are polyester and elastane, and made in China.

I will show the to DH when it is daylight in the morning, but I think they will need to go back, because he can't really wear a pink silk blouse to work.

I think they would be absolutely beautiful for someone with a style like Margaret Thatcher. They are very subtlely, beautifully feminine. Probably not right for my DH though.

I will start hunting again.
