Help please with over sixty skin care Trinny or Jones Road or?

Fairtheewellmyhearties · 18/08/2025 09:02

I am lost in a sea of on-line ads and would appreciate some personal recommendations please.

Context: used to wear full make up in my professional job in my youth but haven’t done so for years while raising dc, have outdoor lifestyle. Children have now left home and I have more bandwidth to devote to my appearance, skin care and make up etc, but crikey, where to start? The products have all changed in twenty or so years! My make-up bag is literally empty apart from an emery board and an old lipstick! 😁

Fair-ish combination skin with yellow undertones prone to redness on cheeks and nose and from over-heating! Used to have mouse hair but now it’s grey, Also quite sensitive to the feel of things on my face and eyes. Can’t bear heavy make up!

Also, I’m not made of money and Trinny and Jones Road seem quite expensive although I have tried a few tiny testers and have been impressed, especially by JR Vitamin face base. Are there other cheaper brands that do the job?

To be honest I don’t know what BB creams are or miracle blurs or whatever? Can someone explain to me what I need in a very simple way? I can’t be doing with anything too complicated!

I am looking for a combined sun protector, and tinted moisturiser. I think! Open to advice!

A combined blusher and lipstick,

And a good mascara to start.

Do people still wear powder nowadays?

Can anyone help please?

Hi, OP -

Are you happy with your skincare?

For makeup I would start with sun protection at least SPF 30 with a good UVA rating, included in or separate to your moisturiser. Every single day.

People will be along with lots of good advice and separate is generally better, not because the SPF is inherently better but because you need to use a greater amount of suncream on your face, neck and chest than you do moisturiser. But combined is easier and especially as we move towards autumn and winter using it generously is an easy way to start. My dermatologist likes Cetaphil SPF 50 daytime moisturiser for a combined option and I do use it sometimes though I generally use a separate sun cream. It’s good on all counts, reasonably priced and doesn’t sting my eyes, a rarity.

For makeup, I actually like powder during a heat wave but mostly it is not recommended as we pass 50 and I think that’s correct. Cream, gel and stick blushers. Possibly powder eye shadows but I prefer cream. Creamy, moisturising lipsticks or glosses - anything too shiny looks too young and anything too matte or longwearing dries us out.

A BB cream is a good shout. Oddly, Max Factor has an older creamy foundation in a round disc called Miracle Something that my skin loves. Can spread it thinly or build a bit, very natural. Comes with a sponge, Very reasonably priced at Boots and SuperDrug.

I love Clinique and L’Oreal tubing mascara that comes off with warm water but also Max Factor 2000 Calorie mascara. I know lots of people who swear by Lancome but it is owned by L’Oreal and I’ve never seen the difference. Past 50 I think we need to concentrate on thickening our lashes more than lengthening them. Unless you have a fairly dark complexion or very dark hair, brown or brown-black as opposed to black is worth consideration.

How are your brows? Tastes vary so I wouldn’t tell you what to do, but they can really affect your appearance.

I hope you have fun with this.

I don’t mean to discourage you from splashing out the cash if you prefer to do so. I have just been struck by how both of my dermatologists (in America and the UK), who are glamorous looking women, mainly use skincare and makeup from the chemist. And Clinique.

Purplecatshopaholic · 18/08/2025 12:36

I would try Erborian - either the BB or the CC cream. Tinted moisturiser with some SPF. The BB is heavier than the CC, more like foundation. I use the CC and have never looked back. You can buy a travel size to start with to see if it suits your skin. They also do a CC red correct (green tube), and a CC dull correct (purple tube) - also fab. I wear a little powder on my T-zone. I love Pat McGraths powder for under eyes (skin blurring under eye perfection, or some such name!) I have just started using the new tubing mascara from Rum - it’s nice everyday mascara. If you want more va-va-voom, try Push Up Lashes from Charlotte Tilbury - flippin awesome stuff, lol.
PS not in my sixties, but heading that way, lol. I have dry skin for info.

Mikart · 18/08/2025 12:48

Im mid 60s and use PCA skincare and Eborian cc creme. Bobby brown cream blusher

UmberMoose · 18/08/2025 12:57

I have done researches and finalized a routine for my dry skin finally. Here is my routine that I follow:
Morning:
Using water to wash your face,
Sebamed clear face gel,
Garnier spf
Evening:
Cerave moisturizer,
Started with Tretinoin (0.025) from skinorac
Sebamed clear facial gel

Wow! This is absolutely amazing advice! And very clearly explained!

I can’t thank you enough poetryandwine 😃❤️

That’s all so helpful!

Yes I can see how one needs a slightly different regime for different seasons

SPF is a huge consideration as I spend so much time outside and although I have reasonably good skin, I can tell the difference in the winter if I have had too much sun exposure in the summer, particularly on my forehead which is naturally dry (I always wear spf 30 but sometimes it’s not enough).

As for skincare; I tend to wash my face with warm water abd then use a pot or tube L’Oreal or Weleda daily moisturiser from the supermarket, so definitely room for improvement!

I’ve noted all of your recommendations for the different products!

I think you are right that there are a lot of equally good dupes on the market for better prices and I am going to be visiting a couple of French pharmacies on holiday next week so I will have a look there too.

Thank you again!

Full disclaimer I am not over 60 but follow in the birth of DC2 a few years ago I became allergic to much skincare including my makeup. I completely retailed my skincare routine (recommend Nip + Fab if you want to check out the products that might work for you) and searched for a foundation that wouldn’t set off a reaction. The one I settled one is recommended for older skin as it is very lightweight and doesn’t sit in lines. It is the baked foundation by Laura Geller. I bought a starter set with foundation, blush and 2 eyeshadows and you cannot feel it on your skin at all.

A starter set sounds good too!

For spf I recommend La Roche Posay (comes in a lotion or cream I use the lotion in summer) and in the winter I prefer Eve Lom day spf which is a cream and very moisturising but not heavy.

love the sound of the eborian cc cream and will look that out.

for eyeshadow I am a complete covert to the Laura mercier cream sticks. There is one called golden brown I use all the time (I have light brown eyes and a yellow toned fair complexion)

Thank you so much! This is all great info!

I have seen some recommendations for Eborian elsewhere. And the red cc corrector sounds like it would be a good choice for me!

Travel sizes a v good call to try out, thanks!

I will start making a wee list …

I use Jones Road for makeup and I like it. I was disappointed with the skin care offering so don’t use it for that.
They have a store close to me but I don’t know how common they are.

poetryandwine · 18/08/2025 14:59

Hi again, OP -

thank you for your kind reply.

The tretinoin that @UmberMoose refers to is the gold standard in anti-aging skin care.

It is in the retinoid family, along with retinol and retinal and other prescriptions. It was originally used against acne, then the other properties were noticed.

Tret is available only by prescription in the UK. Many use monthly or bimonthly subscriptions like Dermatica, mentioned by a PP. @UmberMoose and many others happily import their tret at a fraction of the price. I order a similar retinoid as needed through Boots Online Doctor.

If you get interested, it is worth a separate thread. Proper use is very easy but somewhat rigid and it is good to get the pros and cons. It is a long game; I saw nothing for over three months and then suddenly my pores were gone.

FWIW both of my derms, with flawless skin, have been on tret since medical school.

DelphiniumBlue · 18/08/2025 15:21

I'm mid-sixties, and have pretty good skin, as does my Mum who is in her late eighties, and I think it's mostly down to luck and sun protection.
Mum has only ever used Oil of Olay, has always kept out of the sun. I use whatever day cream is on offer ( Nivea/L'Oreal, or Aldi) that contains SPF, and whatever night cream is cheap and creamy.
I have tried This Works ( got some as a present) but can't see that it made any difference at all, though it did feel nice. At £60 + for a pack ( on offer)containing small pots of the night and day cream, I don't think it's worth buying again.

I do buy Trinny makeup - I think I have a BB cream that is sort of like tinted moisturiser, and some Lip to Cheek pots. I think I have been sold the dream though, they make me feel a bit glam, but you can probably get similar much cheaper. However, the Trinny eyeliner is very good - it does stay put when most others don't. That is worth shelling out on!

Delphigirl · 18/08/2025 15:45

Love your dual derms on each side of the pond @poetryandwine , sooo glam! I have also put myself on tretanoin from skin and me and exactly as you say, at 3 months my skin suddenly refined and brightened. Love it. Was using retinol before which I thought was doing a good job of keeping age at bay a bit but this is so much better.

it’s also so much simpler. I just cleanse (Eve Lom cleanser), do the skin & me tretanoin which also has niacinamide and something else, then some avene hyaluronic acid gel moisturiser and in the morning spf. No serums or anything else.

stayathomer · 18/08/2025 16:03

Op if you go basic (my skin hates acids and exfoliates, even easygoing ones) you don’t need to go all out- a good spf (le Roche posay), primer look up primers for mature skin but my mum in her 70s and me (45) both live by Aimee Connolly (the moisturising one), which is a brand dedicated to people with red skin. Again mum and I use clarins bb cream (but there are only a few shades so check them out first). I can’t advise on moisturiser as I literally just use avene and concentrate on hydration over anything else. Cetaphil skin wash. Best of luck and enjoy!

Hahaha. Seriously, I recognise your name because I enjoy many of your posts including this one.

I moved to America before settling in the UK and it was there that my Mediterranean sun soaked lifestyle first caught up with me and I had my first derm. I will have periodic mole checks probably for the rest of my life.

Both of these (women) derms have been great about debunking skin care myths. They are living examples proving that tret (or similar), sun cream, a basic skin care and makeup routine with quite ordinary products and the right attitude is all you need. I’ve probably saved quite a lot of £££ even by going private in the UK.

But Eve Lom is iconic. How do you rate the cleanser?

Cielovista · 18/08/2025 19:35

I love L’Oréal moisturiser over 40 with 30 spf. I’ve been using it since I was 45 (now 62) and have barely a wrinkle- although I spend a LOT of time in the sun.

Ooh I'm sort of in the same boat as you OP. I've found a few products that I love.

Washing and moisturizing:
Dermalogica microfoliant
Cerave moisturiser with SPF for day and a night one
Kiehl's Nightly refining concentrate

Makeup
Cheapo primer from Superdrug (or sudacrem if my skin is feeling a bit unhappy)
I have a Mac foundation that is not bad, and a Sephora foundation/concealer stick that works well in summer, as it doesn't slide off in the heat, but I'm not in love with either one - still searching for the perfect thing
Clinique chubby stick lip colour. This is perfect. Not matte, not too shiny.
Origins ginzing volumising mascara - I got this as a freebie and SWEAR by it now
ELF liquid eyeliner if evening-y
Setting spray - again, Superdrug cheapie, works really well

Appalonia · 19/08/2025 05:30

I use this as a tinted moisturiser, it also has spf.

You can go to make-up counters and they will give you a sample of foundation for you to try at home. I recently got some from Estee Lauded at Boots. I use Micellar water to clean my face at night and find Eucerin a good brand for moisturiser.
