Evening Wedding in Spain.

IamEarthymama · 16/08/2025 22:21

I have just bought this dress for a semi formal evening wedding in Spain in late September.
I am a size 12 and it fits like a dream.

I'm going to wear some nude low heeled sandals and gold jewellery, probably earrings and a chunky bangle.

I am going to need a cover up as the meal and reception are being held in an outdoor restaurant. What would be the best choice?
I have a lovely edge to edge cream cotton knee length jacket but it might be too heavy/formal for eating.
I was thinking of a crocheted or quilted cotton waist length jacket? I am hoping for other ideas please!

I love that dress thanks for posting!

I would go with a simple shawl in a similar colour OP.

I think this waisted knit jacket in the ivory or cappuccino could look great with your dress OP - with its on-trend slightly dropped, corset-style waist. I'd try them on together first though, as a lot depends on where the waist of the jacket hits.

If you want a nod to fashion (because you just do, or it's that kind of wedding), I'd do some googling or ChatGPTing about what kind of blazer or jacket styles are meant to be worn with this style of dress. Maybe the 'look' is all about having an oversized top layer. Maybe it's meant to be fitted. Or casual and knitted. I've no idea but I'm veering towards the casual-but-fitted.

Depends how much that matters to you of course! A pashmina would get over this dilemma and look fine, but would ignore the fashion aspect of the dress.

Personally I’m not keen on the dress, it’s got a strange waistline to pair with an jacket and I think you’ll be very underdressed.

DoodleLug · 20/08/2025 11:06

I think I would take the jacket with the intention of wearing it over your shoulders rather than on whilst you assess the need or possibly buy something there.

outofdate · 20/08/2025 11:54

Gorgeous dress! Perfect!
I agree with looking at One Hundred Stars.

mamagogo1 · 20/08/2025 12:01

Cream pashmina is perfect and elevates it,

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 20/08/2025 13:08

You don't say if it's likely to be primarily British or Spanish guests or a mixture of both. My experience of evening weddings with Spanish folk is that they are black tie level formal for women. Floor length frock in silks and satins.

It's a lovely dress but you might want canvas opinion if you have a family contact who will know what the general vibe is.
Then there's the fact that it's black which is bad form in the UK but I don't recall whether it was a thing in Spain. I just remember the sheer glamour.

Yes I thought the link had taken me to the wrong dress as I'd been looking at that one the other day as a basic summer dress. Not very wedding guest style. It's a completely plain black dress if I'm looking at the right link? Am I missing something?

Hard disagree here. Yes, it's plain black in colour but has a textured fitted top with a delicate ruffled neckline, and the full skirt has both a different fabric and different texture.
It will be lovely for a sophisticated, semi formal or formal wedding.
And the Spanish do love to dress up for a wedding.

tartyflette · 20/08/2025 15:32

A soft, lightweight cashmere scarf/square in a bold colour would look good but I'd echo the advice upthread to try them on together.

Fair enough 🤷 if the Spanish like to dress up for a wedding I think Op is going to be particularly underdressed in a £36 m&s jersey dress

waltzingparrot · 20/08/2025 15:44

Silk cardigan?

outofdate · 20/08/2025 15:53

It’s actually chocolate not black.

BlackStrayCat · 20/08/2025 16:06

In Spain, you will be massively underddressed in a beach dress from m and s.

Massimo Dutti.

Not too much cream, you don't want to look like the bride. A nice lace, light and airy pashmena perhaps.

OP will be wearing a black dress.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 20/08/2025 16:56

I think if you go all out in the accessories you could make it look very glamorous. But if you don't then it will potentially be quite a casual look for a full/half Spanish but not a British wedding. Gold strappy sandals [bring some flats for later on, there's a lot of dancing], bangles, your hair up in a formal style, an embroidered evening wrap [something like this in old gold rather than glittery lame https://www.tcglondon.com/products/gold-pashmina-for-wedding?variant=55178891690363&country=GB&currency=GBP&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&srsltid=AfmBOopvuia2KFtB6i12HH77Kbo3Rj-PAJ6xNG1z_tVclf-V1rLIkyw1tpA]

Arf! Maybe don't wear that in Catalonia, where bullfighting was banned for a while by the regional government (until the Spanish government un-banned it, presumably just because they could). I don't think the bullfights have returned but the argument will continue to rumble on for generations. On the other hand, if you want to risk being pelted with eggs and worse ... it'll liven up the wedding photos.

Mencia · 20/08/2025 20:20

If it is a Spanish wedding the OP will be VERY underdressed, unless it is an “alternative” wedding in a very informal environment (think beach club).

Alondra · 21/08/2025 07:41

I'll add my voice to a pashmina/shawl suggestion.

I'm a Spaniard, and a jacket with that dress won't look good. The dress is gorgeous and the combination of nude low heel sandals and gold jewellery is perfect for a Spanish summer wedding.

An off white shawl will give you warmth in case you need it and will elevate the dress, making the outfit effortlessly elegant.

She won't be underdressed at all. It's an outdoor celebration in September and refined simplicity is what most guests wear in Spain.

The dress is beautiful - tick
Nude low heel sandals - tick
Gold jewellery - tick.

She just needs a pashmina to enhance the whole look.

Your view on it.
Mine, after having attended many (perhaps even 100+) Spanish weddings over the years, is completely different.

Mencia · 21/08/2025 08:31

And, @Alondra I’m also a Spaniard.

KitsPoint · 21/08/2025 08:35

Not sure there’s any point arguing about it or commenting further, OP appears to be long gone….!

Alondra · 21/08/2025 08:38

In that case, we have to disagree.

I've attended many weddings over the years and being too formal is long gone. Most people, IMO, go for a quiet refined look these days.
