help with my frizzy hair

My hair is a riot. It has always been wavy but since menopause it has got frizzy and huge. I had it cut earlier (chin length) and when it dried, jeez louise, it was so frizzy and enormous, if anyone remembers Crystall Tipps, just like that. Have been using serum which helps a bit but is there some sort of other spray which might help? Trying to avoid gel/hairspray/straightening as that's just going to make it dryer and more frizzy. I also don't want to chop it very short.

Kerastase Ulimte Elixir is amazing

BetweenTwoFerns · 07/08/2025 18:13

I sleep with coconut oil on my hair once a week and I think it helps. I’ve mentioned it on here before and been told it can’t possibly make a difference and I should use some high priced concoction instead. In my local Asda, it’s sold in the hair aisle as well as the oil aisle. Exactly the same jars and the women who buy it have hair to be admired. That’s why I started.

Treviarpelli · 07/08/2025 18:25

I use Only Curls products and find they’re really good at persuading my half frizzy/ wavy and half straightish/ kinky hair to form and keep soft curls.
I’ve tried various other cheaper products but only curls is the only one that works so now I’m stuck with it

KassandraOfSparta · 07/08/2025 18:33

Should add I really grudge spending money - £25 on a wee bottle seems incredibly pricey:

Do you just comb it through? Wrap it in a towel or something? Then just wash it out in the morning?

Wubby1 · 07/08/2025 22:14

Keratin treatment was the only thing I’ve found that really works

BetweenTwoFerns · 07/08/2025 22:46

Pretty much. It’s the consistency of yogurt in the summer and butter maybe in the winter. I slap it on and sort of smooth it in then I use one of those towelling turbans to sleep in then I wash my hair as normal in the morning. If I don’t do it for a couple of weeks I can really tell.

Rina66 · 08/08/2025 07:22

The John Frieda frizz ease products are good for the price. Normally on a 3 for 2 somewhere, Boots at the moment, so buy the mask, the serum and the hairspray, if you can do another three, the shampoo, the night time thingy and the blow dry spray…

My process is shampoo, conditioner, hair mask+shower cap, exit shower, leave in conditioner, styling products (bed head is good) and a bit of serum/oil just before it dries. None of them cost above a tenner, but there’s lots of steps.

I only ever brush just before and after a shower, but I don’t know how you style yours. As soon as I brush my hair, it’s a frizz bomb.

I’m going to try a weekly coconut oil treatment, that sounds great!

Lol! My childhood nickname was Crystal Tips!! Look up “Curly Girl Method” @KassandraOfSparta. It’s basically - don’t wash your hair very often; avoid sulphates; don’t brush when dry.

Boromirsgreyhound · 08/08/2025 14:25

I feel your pain. I’ve struggled with my clown hair for years!!!! Few things I’ve found that really, really work. The trick is all about hydration. Use a sulphate free shampoo to avoid stripping your hair. Boots and Superdrug have a good range. I like Umberto Giannini Thirsty Curls and Ogx rescue fusions and they also contain hyaluronic acid. Usually on some sort of offer. For conditioning I use L’Oréal Elvive hyaluronic acid mask. The conditioner is great, I just think the mask gives added moisture. Avoid the shampoo from the range as it isn’t sulphate free. Then Elvive hyaluronic acid wonder water after the mask. Also usually on some sort of offer. For styling, I use the JVN complete instant recovery (Look Fantastic, Space NK or Cult Beauty). Worth the money. Kerastase sulphate free stuff is excellent but bear in mind they and Elvive are both owned by L’Oréal 😉. I find the products pretty much identical and I’ve tried everything over the years!!!! JVN also does a lush air dry cream which hydrated curls. X

ThatAgileCoralBird · 08/08/2025 14:32

try a protein treatment on your hair. I found Marisa’s curls on YouTube homemade gelatine treatment but you can also buy protein treatment from merwave.

I use a mixture of products and am still trying to find my holy grail.

I feel your pain op.

I have tried so many products to stop the frizz in my hair.
with the passing of time my once luscious easily managed curls are now a mass of poker straight, frizz and corkscrew curls. I often look like I am wearing a Russian fur hat.

Color wow dream coat (you get deals on boots and look fantastic) spray it on on wet hair and blow dry etc as normal it's amazing stuff
humimidity hair spray helps during day
currently trialing living prof no froz instant de frizzer
i don't wash my hair often - once a week an odd time twice a week. moisturisers shampoo and conditioner use a mask every month use leave in conditioner spray and sleep on a silk pillow case all helps keep frizz at bay

yallahbye · 08/08/2025 14:52

Any smoothing/hydrating product you use on your hair, apply straight after washing your hair when it’s still wet.

TicklishMintDuck · 08/08/2025 15:35

Have you tried argan oil?

MissAvainthesun · 08/08/2025 15:54

I’ve just switched to Keune Keratin smooth range and all I can say is wow I no longer have frizz.

GreenSmithing · 08/08/2025 16:58

John Frieda frizz ease range here too, and only combing when wet. But also chin length is a tricky length to pull off with frizzy hair, IME. It either needs to be long enough for the weight to pull it down a bit, or short enough it doesn't start going sideways. So, it might be it improves by itself in a month or so, as it gets longer

Fonty · 08/08/2025 18:30

I too was Crystal Tips! Second John Frieda serum (put on wet hair). Also second the Kerastase elixir ultime. Very spendy, but you only need a couple of pumps, so it lasts ages. I also use Kerastase shampoo for very dry hair and the masque as a conditioner. I also only wash my hair once or maybe twice a week. I never brush it either. I also use (quite old fashioned, now) Schwarzkopf shine tonic. You used to be able to get it from Superdrug years ago, but I now have to order it. I spray in the morning and it sort of makes the hair ‘limper’ iyswim. Nice smell and it does give a shine.

Skybluemandylou · 08/08/2025 19:22

I too am inflicted with the crystal tips frizz and cannot recommend the Color Wow range highly enough. It’s been a game changer for me, especially the Dream Coat spray

Nellodee · 08/08/2025 20:33

Is the colour wow dream coat for people who dry their hair straight, or for wavy/curly styled hair, please?

BreadInCaptivity · 08/08/2025 20:42

I feel your pain.

But I recently (accidentally) discovered a new process…

I tried curly girl and it worked ok. Until the next day when even with a bonnet I looked ridiculous.

But what I discovered was if I wash my hair, put in curl cream and let it dry naturally it looks lovely for one day.

However the day after that it’s buggered. But if I brush it though it’s thick and has volume and then I use my hot round brush on it and it’s fabulous.

Like a big blow dry.!

ScurryHurry · 08/08/2025 20:49

I used to avoid straighteners as I worried it would damage my hair.

Then one day I decided I'd rather have damaged hair that looked okay over healthy frizzy hair.

So now I use straighteners every morning (with heat protection spray) and my hair looks so much better!

It does look bloody awful if I don't straighten it though 😂

PrimaniTu · 08/08/2025 20:57

My hairdresser uses LOC on my hair:
Leave in conditioner
Oil
Curl Creme

They puts a pump of each and it does a great job. I use LOC after washing and then just curl crème afterwards. I use Only Curls curl
creme.

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 08/08/2025 21:01

I have similar hair so what I do is use pantene smooth and sleek shampoo and then put it in a towel for about 5 minutes and then put some Bryl cream on it and comb it through and then pin it down with hair pins and then use a hair dryer with a diffuser to dry it as straight as possible.

MelOfTheRoses · 08/08/2025 21:06

I have tried most things, and like pp say, it is ok for the first day. After that I put it all in a bun on top of my head with a soft scrunchie. I even sleep like that.

I haven't tried the coconut oil, and have some in the cupboard so I will give that a go tonight.
