Where to buy clothes for 11/12 year old girl?

We went to our local shopping centre and all the shops just seemed to have clothes for younger children (age 9 and under ) or adults - they have a big H&M, small river island, small Next

Which seems a really missed opportunity tbh as it's where all tweens and teens go to hang out /go to the cinema etc

DD loves fashion* and style, so she really enjoys picking out outfits. We can order online I guess but she's much prefer to try stuff on in person, and it makes a nice way to spend time together. I'm going to try and take her to the nearest big city next time she needs clothes but would love to know what shops would be best to try?

She's pretty average height for 11 and very slender /toned (she dances 6 days a week and also does rock climbing) so very much fits in age 10-11 clothes rather than being able to try any bigger sizes

Next and H and M do this age group. Also New Look and Rivet Island,

New Look H and M are Primark were our staples. Primark does stuff like Disney t shirts in xsmall

Do we just need to go to much bigger branches then?.because there was nothing her size in our local ones

New Look firm favourites here. Depending on sizes a 6 or 8 adult will be OK for my 12 year old DD in places without a teen range.

bennybannsider · 03/08/2025 09:58

Dunnes and Mark's and Spencer both do nice age appropriate children's clothes in big sizes. New look does some (but also some which are too old imo for that age.)

Laiste · 03/08/2025 09:59

Oh tell me about it !!!

Thus is a bug bear of mine.
Youngest DD is 11 (needs 12/13 on bottom as has long legs and booty, and 10/11 on top) and for the last couple of years i've found tesco and primark and sains are crap for that age group!

LetsGoOnHoliday · 03/08/2025 10:01

Zara, some of new look 915 range, Primark and Nike all work well for dd12 who is in age 10/11 and very slim. Not all of the shops have the teen ranges in stores though so it's worth checking the exact locations.

Oh yes DSD was very slim with very long legs at 12 and it was nearly impossible to find her clothes!.(That was a decade ago now )

I think that's what I must need to check before we go.
She mainly lives in Nike to be fair as shes constantly either climbing,.dancing or playing outside, but she needs some party dresses for various events and also just wanted to buy some outfits for holiday's etc (and she just enjoys fashion and trying things on)

My DD same age, buys everything in New Look or Primark, and orders online from Shein. Also a fan of White Fox.

user2848502016 · 03/08/2025 10:07

Mine liked the new look teen section at that age.
Matalan also have a teen range which sometimes have stuff they like, although can sometimes be a bit young.
Tesco older girls is quite good for basics.
Also primark is worth a look, either their teen sizes or adults as they go down to an XXS

whodidnt · 03/08/2025 10:10

Urban outfitters do size XXS sometimes and find even a XS/S is perfect for tops and T-shirts, bottoms are far too big though.

for bottoms we look in the boys section to find cargos and jorts that fit dd and she likes. Actually she’s recently been buying everything from the boys section, the grunge/skateboarder looks seems to be in fashion.

another trick is teach her too crochet, dd has made her self hundreds of little tops and is now working on a cardigan.

evilharpy · 03/08/2025 10:11

Mine is nearly 11 (although still fits 9-10 especially in the waist) and we are also struggling as she thinks a lot of the kids ranges are too babyish. We have had better luck with the Primark adult range in size 2XS.

What we really need is for Tammy Girl to come back.

Exactly! When I was 10/11./12 Tammy girl was in both our local towns and it was perfect

It's mind boggling that in a shopping centre that is very much the kind of place parents feel happy to send tweens to get a bit of independence that none of the clothing shops cater for them

Look on Vinted for tammy girl

incognitomouse · 03/08/2025 10:23

There was a revival of Tammy Girl a couple of years ago, on ASOS I think, but it was very much aimed at adults which I found weird.

FloraBotticelli · 03/08/2025 10:23

I have the same problem with my boy too - age 12 and he’s on the cusp between kids departments and XS adult sizes.

H&M sometimes have age 12-14 on the racks but yes, I do find you need to go to the bigger shops to find things in stock.

Supermarkets are just as good as anywhere tbh - I often order from Tu/Sainsburys online as they rarely have the right sizes in store.

M&S sometimes has some nice bits for young teens and you can filter by age in their kids section online, but agree it’s a bit hit and miss with finding something not too babyish.

Aspanielstolemysanity · 03/08/2025 10:27

I can see there are quite a lot of options online, but she's really keen to do 'in person.' shopping, as am I. Partly because it's a nice way to spend time together,. partly because I want vibrant towns and cities,.and partly because it's much easier to see how well clothes fit /look when you try them on in person

My DD is nearly 12. She’s 5ft 1 ish but has a C cup chest and hips and a bum she has a flat stomach. We have had to move to ladies clothing sometimes XS sometimes small. She loves primark, SHEIN, new look aswell. Xx

Cece92 · 03/08/2025 10:30

Just seeing the comments about Tammy girl I LOVED that shop ☺️

Cece92 · 03/08/2025 10:31

I don’t know where you live but there’s a Nike outlet near mine and I got 2 ladies t shirts and a pair of ladies leggings last weekend for £40 which I thought was brilliant for my daughter as she loves Nike leggings xx

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 03/08/2025 10:37

DD(13) is just growing into women’s clothes properly now. In the last couple pf years she’s shopped at Primark (there’s a teen range, can’t remember what its called), New Look 915, bits from m&s, bits from Next, bits from Gap (now in Next). Everyone has a bette teen/preteen range on line. Jack Wills too.

Aspanielstolemysanity · 03/08/2025 12:54

Another question from me - what about shoes? She mainly lives in trainers but she has a few big parties coming up and would like some party shoes. Although thinking about it I think dsd just wore trainers even to prom.
But if DD does want some where are good places for age appropriate but fashionable shoes? I like to get quite decent quality for shoes because I feel protective of her feet. Her dad bought awful shoes for her for his wedding and she had to miss dance for a week afterwards Angry

Dd is 10.5 but is wearing a 12 in bottoms as she is tall but her legs are very long. H&M is my go to as they have adjustable waists which are really useful. Primark is good too and Sainsburys as well, surprisingly.

I wanted to try New Look the one in Bham centre closed. Might be worth a trip to one in a retail park.

Shoes-wise she is wearing a 5.5 so can just get adult ones if needed. Schuh has lots of mary Jane and loafers.

evilharpy · 03/08/2025 17:14

Shoes-wise, mine lives in a pair of cheap Primark slides for running around in, or her trainers, or will wear (and rock) Doc Marten boots (from Vinted) with any outfit. She's not into dressy shoes at all although would love a pair of glittery Docs.

Trouble is most places only sell it online.

We used to spend hours trying to buy in shops but just gave up in the end,
