Help! Beautiful black dress for dad’s funeral

Hello,

I am in fairly urgent need of a lovely, modest, black dress for my dear dad’s funeral.

Must have sleeves (elbow or longer), knee length at least or below, I prefer high neck too as I’m a bit busty. I prefer something with interest, structure, or subtle pattern. I’m a squishy size 12, wrap dresses are off as just not flattering on me.

budget - willing to spend but not crazy money (not more than £350/400).

I'm so sorry for your loss.

When I was in your position, I got myself in front of a personal stylist in Debenhams and said "sort me out a dress for my mum's funeral please". It meant I didn't have to think in my grief.

I advise anyone in a similar grief to do the same. John Lewis and other dept stores offer this service for free.

I would not choose a jersey dress. Doesn’t hold its shape well. Most of us end up having a funeral outfit but mine isn’t black. Much prefer navy.

I have ordered a Ghost dress, and the MaxMara. Hopefully one will work and I can get to town to try on the Hobbs/Fenwick (both a little different but I like).

While I have no idea whether I’d want to wear it again or not, it matters to me to look my best at this important occasion!

Same for me, I don’t personally think I could wear what I wore to my parents funerals again as it takes me back to the day and memories.

I wore an outfit (a skirt suit) I spread owned that my dad had previously said looked good on me. It felt appropriate. It was a deep burgundy colour.

Sorry for your loss @egdehsdrawkcab, I fully understand you wanting to look your best for such an important moment. I like to feel I am well turned out - almost to not let my loved one down if that makes sense.

I 100% get why you want to look your best egdehsdrawkcab, I hope you are coping as best you can. I lost my Dad on Tuesday and I too will be looking for something to wear so have found this post useful, it doesn’t matter if I ever wear it again. It feels like my last act of service to make him proud. I will also go to get my hair done and my nails, my heart might be breaking but to me it is important I represent my Dad to his family and friends.

@egdehsdrawkcab @darknightslightmorning My sincere condolences to you both, it's such a difficult time.
I lost my father in April and we buried him in May, I felt the funeral was the last thing I would do for my father and I needed to be my best in his honour.
I can't look at the Cos black dress I bought and wore. But I'm comforted that we worked hard to make his funeral the best that it could be and by the people who were there to pay their respects.

Sorry for your loss. Are you sure you want an expensive dress that you love for your dad's funeral. You may not ever want to wear it again and £400 is a lot to leave hanging in the wardrobe. Perhaps you could pick something that is ok and you quite like? That you can give away or not worry about never wearing?

I have 2 funeral dresses - one for summer, one for winter. It’s really worth having them sorted.

I wore this to my dad’s funeral last year. Squishy size 12 with a very large bust and it fitted beautifully and was extremely modest with lovely detail. The neckline and back are really different too.

I had a very fortunate afternoon today when I stumbled upon a dress agency at the town we are staying in for a quick UK break (booked months ago and much needed). I have picked up a gorgeous dress from Selected Femme and a long black shirt dress from Next - quite different to each other but both really good options.
