Wedding guest . . . dress opinions and do I really need something on my head?

Hi guys, I'm going to an autumn wedding this year and wondered what the general etiquette is around wearing hats / fascinators etc.

I'd rather not, to be honest - I don't have a face for hats. The venue is a typical country house-style thing, but I have no relationship with anyone going (apart from MIL and FIL, whom I don't trust to guide me on this sort of thing), so I don't know what the expectation will be.

Also, what do you think of this dress? Does it look too much like something you'd wear to the office? I'll dress it up with some nice shoes, but I'm not generally drawn to feminine clothes (more a t-shirt and jeans type!).

I like the cut of the dress but otherwise it makes me think of a flag. 🇮🇶🇻🇪🇵🇷

The last wedding I attended wearing a hat was my cousin’s in the 1990s and it was a military wedding. I haven’t worn a hat since, not even to my son’s wedding, neither did the bride’s mother.
which guests often find surprising when I wear a hat frequently in the autumn and winter

I find the more middle class the wedding, the more fascinators and hats. I do actually quite like wearing a fascinator as it does really elevate an outfit and makes it more obvious I’m dressed for a wedding!

I recently wore quite a simple flowery summer dress, but had a fascinator to match which really helped make it more formal.

I love that reiss dress and don’t think you need a hat, I agree with others do something fancy with your hair!

DD and friends are going for big bows in their hair - clipped at the back - so not overly noticeable.

I think this dress is great! It’s an unusual style and not corporate at all. I love it! A nice pair of matching high heels and clutch bag and you’ll look stunning - no hat or fascinate needed 😊

I have that dress! Did you see my post on another thread about it?

It feels so nice on. I actually do wear it for work but it would be smart enough for a wedding, certainly.

No hats or fascinators required these days. If anything, if I had my hair back, I might wear a bow or flower. Or you could get a nice corsage or buttonhole accessory. It would also soften the lines of the dress a little.

The furthest I'd go towards wearing a fascinator today is a hairband - this lady makes lovely ones with a feather. I have one in black.

Ah sorry the dress wasn't right for you. I'm quite tall and a size ten.
