Beyond the High Street

I'd like to start a collaborative thread for everyone to contribute shops, designers or online clothing sources that they love or think others might like. It's easy to get stuck in a rut of available high street shopping, but that choice is a becoming more limited as physical shops close.

There is a world of online shopping available, it does have disadvantages in terms of sizing and delivery charges but I think there is far more choice out there than just the high street.

This thread is an attempt to show what else is available across different price points and styles. It would be great if people could give an idea of what the brand is known for and it's price point. The brand/shop should have worldwide shipping so that all Mumsnet users can use them.

I'll start - I have no connection with these companies.

L F Markey UK based womenswear - strong focus on colour and casual wear. Price ££ - £££

Stable of Ireland Irish store promoting Irish design and production, natural fabrics, womenswear, menswear & accessories. Price ££-£££

Marimekko Finnish company - Womenswear, menswear, children's clothing, home wear and accessories - often does collaborations with Uniqlo. Price £ - £££

MOT Nigerian company - Womenswear, children's wear. Price ££

LF Markey

LF Markey Modern Basics and Luxury Workwear. Shop our signature boilersuits, dungarees & more innovative cuts, bold colours, and fine fabrics.

following - great thread

That’s impressive, @IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle!

I haven’t yet embraced Vinted, for various reasons, but I’d certainly be interested in seeing what an algorithm might pick for me.

I don't know how it's done it. [Unless Vinted has actually implanted a very small elf in my phone which is reading everything I'm posting on here and can see into my wardrobe]

All I asked it to search was Cabbages & Roses. It's suggested many of the brands on this thread and an &Daughter dress I own.

On the other hand MN's algorithms are suggesting Ann Summers to me - and on The Archers' thread- seriously?? Why??

Shetlands · 27/07/2025 21:34

Here's my green velvet jacket. Monsoon Twilight isn't a current brand (80s/90s I think) so it's all vintage pieces and they're mainly evening wear. If you like silks and velvets and embroidered/embellished things, you'll probably find something from this label.

Can't see it's been mentioned already but Genevieve Sweeney for knitwear

Great thread. I’m always looking for new websites to browse and add to my repertoire.

My contributions are more mainstream than most of these and might not be new to people, but I’m a big fan of Ninety Percent for super soft, draped jersey and Tallulah & Hope for beautiful embroidery.

Edited

Regarding ninety percent - FB showed me an advert and I liked some of the tops but was a bit worried it was a scam site so never ordered. Is the quality good and what is the sizing like please?

For my contribution unfortunately a brand I was buying handmade items from since lockdown has closed it doors and gone in another direction 😢.

Alternatively, this small business started up doing children’s wear before branching out into ladies wear but their linen and velvet pieces (in the winter) are gorgeous. https://freya-lillie.com/product-category/women/all-women/

BangingOn · 28/07/2025 08:00

@MulberryPeony I have been buying from them for years, definitely not a scam site. You can pay via PayPal and they are really good with returns and refunds. I have always found the quality really good too.

I'm starting to see the point of Vinted. In the past any time I've looked, even stuff I owned looked as if it had been used to line a dog basket but the algorithms are now working.

It's currently suggesting dresses from Alémais, Laura Ashley, [including a Laura Ashley silk dress from the 2000s which I own and is in my "not a hope in hell will this fit again, but you never know " chest ] Ghospell, &Daughter, Sideline, Meadows, Molly Goddard , Cawley Studio, Cecilie Bahnsen , WiggyKit, Doen and Beulah. And I didn't even ask it to !

The algorithm is the best thing about Vinted IMO. I like that I still find things to spend money on when I'm not even looking for them...

TealReader · 28/07/2025 11:51

Thank you, I’m really enjoying. Been trying to find my personal style having lost 5 stone and discovered an interest in fashion but the high street hasn’t been appealing to me. Have picked up some lovely things from Essentiel Antwerp, Stine Goya and Celia B which have I think been all mentioned here! Sadly Vinted Ireland seems to have very little of these brands in a 12-14 but hopefully something will come up.

Ive also enjoyed Stella Nova and Seventy and Mochi denim.

Same here! Although I’ve messed it up recently by searching for obscure anime hoodies for my son.

Yes I've had the same problem with "13-14yrs waterproof over trousers" 😂 would be handy if you could have profiles within one account, take note Vinted.

PinkOrangeRed · 28/07/2025 19:47

I'm looking forward to browsing all the links suggested as I need inspiration. I'd like to contribute:
Hiut Denim (made in Wales) £££
Kate Barton ££
Busby & Fox ££
Community Clothing ££ (I thought they would already have been suggested)
Carrier Company ££
Moshulu ££ - cheaper than Birkenstock & more comfortable IMO

I know not everyone is keen on faux- vintage but these jeans and dungarees are rather nice.

I bought some stuff from Fever Heritage on whatnot last night, has a similar vibe to this. Not arrived yet so I can't recommend as such also bought two Essentiel Antwerp pieces I am excited for.

TheLongRider · 29/07/2025 21:00

I'll throw Bryceland into the mix. Hong Kong tailoring with some women's ready-to-wear. The lookbook is interesting.
£££

Also High Everyday Couture Italian brand that used to have a British designer. Sales are good value. Interesting use of technical fabrics and a good cut.

Bryceland is a recent favourite of mine! Haven’t bought anything yet but it does seem exciting.

SpiralSister · 31/07/2025 13:08

Well, the Monsoon Twilight scarlet silk skirt I shared upthread has arrived, and it is FABULOUS.
Perfect length on me, lovely quality as expected, immaculate condition. And it was £25!

I am now awaiting an equally fabulous looking Meadows frock.

Hephebe · 31/07/2025 22:28

Oh how lovely @SpiralSister - are you able to post any pics of it on?

SpiralSister · 01/08/2025 10:52

Probably not, @Hephebe! it is lovely though

Well I’d never dare to share this place on a thread - it’s really just for looking. May appeal to people obsessive about craft. (Click on Shop.)

Discovered this place through another poster. Haven’t bought, but the coats do look superb;

The Landskein

Edited

@IAmNotYourZiggaZigAhhh I tried on a coat from The Landskein a couple of years ago & it is lodged in my mind ever since as DREAM coat! The cut, the fabric, the weight, the detailing- all incredible!

This is the coat I want. 😍

I adore this thread & would like to contribute

Shoes from Anonymous Copenhagen 👌

I have some beautiful leather bags from Ally Cappellino & from a trip to Ireland a few years ago Kinsale Leather

BUMCHEESE · 01/08/2025 13:08

Great thread! I'd love some lower priced suggestions along the same lines.

Most of the brands I like already mentioned here but I'll add Bobo Choses, Sundress and Compania Fantastica which are all a bit hit and miss but occasionally have something really good.

TealReader · 02/08/2025 13:04

Ooh I love Emporium Kalu but their website only has a tiny amount of items on it compared to in store!

Other Irish brands-
Fresh Cuts

Urban Aran

Buan

I’m new here, hoping I’ve got the links right!

HundredMilesAnHour · 04/08/2025 16:13

I’m supposed to be working (but the rest of my company seem to be on holiday so t’internet beckoned) but I, er, accidentally fell in love with a Hades cardigan that I had to order immediately or I would have died on the spot. 😝

Never in my life did I think a cardigan would have that effect on me (as a usually non-cardigan wearer) but gold plated F U C K buttons? Who could resist??!! (Clearly not me!)

Totally loving this brand:

One place I shop a lot is Poppri on eBay - they have great designers at massively reduced prices, often with minor damage.
This Doen dress is £50 with 9 mins to go! Not my size but lovely! www.ebay.co.uk/itm/306421801756?itmmeta=01K1XY73J5AFC520SQKT191HG3&hash=item475829a31c:g:TdoAAeSwIvxoiShI
