I think your skin is lovely without foundation- why are you trying to cover it up?

Source for your info please? If you are going to profer medical advice.

Why so snipey? It’s hardly medical advice and is a pretty widely shared and debunked myth.

Caroline Hirons talks about the drinking water to hydrate skin myth or if you need a more medical pov just checked pubmed and there’s a number of studies all of which support the PP

AtrociousCircumstance · 16/07/2025 20:02

OP you look lovely and your have such a nice skin tone.

namechangeGOT · 16/07/2025 20:16

I don’t think it’s foundation you need. You actually have really good skin, I’d invest in some good skin care. I’ve yet to see foundation look unnoticeable on anyone. I really don’t understand why women with perfectly good skin wear foundation.

I look after my skin, deal with any spots if they occur, brush some Hoola over my face and blusher. I’d honestly sack the foundation off.

raven0007 · 16/07/2025 20:22

I have combination skin. If I use liquid foundation it cakes and goes flaky. Even a tinted moisturiser. I use a basic moisturiser, then a primer called baby skin by maybelline £6. I do my blush etc then use a powder by Elf rather than liquid and press it onto my skin

Cotswoldmama · 16/07/2025 20:39

Your skin looks great. You could use something like skin +Me for the Tretinoin, this helps with hyperpigmentation as well as being anti aging. Then a vitamin c serum with ferulic acid. I just tried a sample of skinceuticals and loved it until I discovered it's £165! So I found that boots do a dupe https://www.boots.com/boots-modern-chemistry-glow-10-vitamin-c-serum-with-ferulic-acid-30ml-10362988?traffic=paid.shopping&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=19971247868&gbraid=0AAAAA-AdmwQT_aNB-4E_tHg1R7pFvC-j3&gclid=Cj0KCQjwm93DBhD_ARIsADR_DjE9adjeRK74Y6NVaMMjcddEZoB6EQ6v_bC-tnz9b3SGRoq9SL_cScsaAnsVEALw_wcB I haven't tried the dupe but my skin looked better after just 3 days so when I run out of my sample I'll be trying the boots one as it has the same ingredients. What is wrong with your skin? Not being faux-confused, I genuinely think it looks lovely?!

I have combo skin and use this £5 primer and don't bother with foundation. I've tried loads including high end ones, this is my fave. The Rimmel ones are also good. But your skin doesn't actually look like it needs anything (I'm jealous)

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with my skin, it was my skin with makeup on that is the problem. My foundation was looking really dry/cracked/cakey

Genuine question, why do you want to wear foundation? You don’t need to, your skin looks great.

My skin tone is really uneven due to hyper pigmentation and maybe it’s because I’ve just always worn foundation as part of my makeup routine?

Dont try to hide yourself with a mask of foundation, you will look older

As an older woman, who has hyper pigmentation, dry skin with an extremely oily t - zone AND Seb derm added to an extremely reactive skin, its taken me one product at a time to give me a face I happy to say is looking good

The one product I will not skip, is hyaluronic acid. Its a god send, seriously, even if you dont have time for a full on face attack - dont miss this

Mornings I use a serum - my skin has settled and glows with Avon

Moisturiser at night, Im using a cheapie from Lidl at the moment, it's working well for me - not all moisturisers do. Its not a lidl brand, ( not got on with those) its a range just in lately

Dont hide your beauty, polish the canvas

Fozzleyplum · 16/07/2025 23:06

Your skin looks great. I can't advise on functional products such as hyaluronic acid, because I've never used them as I have very sensitive skin and eyes.
However, I did have melasma and dry skin for quite a while after pregnancy and I have similar colouring to you, so it might help if I tell you what worked for me.

I used (and still use) a very neutral moisturiser - Nivea soft during the day, and old fashioned blue pot Nivea at night. I got some face tanning drops to add to the day cream, which gave me a light tan and blended in the uneven coloring so that I didn't need foundation.

UpMyself · 16/07/2025 23:16

You look nice without make-up.

£105 for 150 ml! For this:
#15540 PROPYLENE GLYCOL DICAPRYLATE/DICAPRATE ● SUCROSE ● STEARALKONIUM HECTORITE ● PEG-7 GLYCERYL COCOATE ● BIS-DIGLYCERYL POLYACYLADIPATE-2 ● MANGIFERA INDICA (MANGO) SEED BUTTER ● PROPYLENE CARBONATE ● PARFUM (FRAGRANCE) ● JOJOBA ESTERS ● DICAPRYLYL CARBONATE ● POLYGLYCERYL-3 BEESWAX ● MALVA SYLVESTRIS (MALLOW) EXTRACT ● ROSE EXTRACT ● BISABOLOL ● EUPHORBIA CERIFERA (CANDELILLA) WAX ● SYNTHETIC FLUORPHLOGOPITE ● CI 77891 (TITANIUM DIOXIDE) ● AQUA (WATER) ● HELIANTHUS ANNUUS (SUNFLOWER) SEED OIL ● PENTAERYTHRITYL TETRA-DI-T-BUTYL HYDROXYHYDROCINNAMATE ● GLYCERIN ● TIN OXIDE ● CI 75470 (CARMINE) ● POTASSIUM SORBATE ● TOCOPHEROL ● CITRIC ACID ● SODIUM BENZOATE ● CAPRYLYL GLYCOL ● PENTYLENE GLYCOL

What does it do that caster sugar mixed with a carrier oil wouldn't (apart from make you poorer)?

Toodles89 · 16/07/2025 23:22

This is excellent value and will work to smooth, hydrate and reduce pigmentation if used daily.

Inkey mandelic acid with retinol and glycerin.

You are beautiful and your skin tone is lovely, and adds character to your face. I don’t think you need to cover this up.

Although I’m just an internet randomer

Pateallday · 17/07/2025 07:19

Im another who thinks your skin is lovely, but I get out of habit you might like to stick with foundation. A couple of observations/suggestions:

  1. Don't go near the physical face scrubs, they tend to be an outdated method for exfoliation/poor value for what you get and its really easy to go too hard and damage your skin barrier. Using a cream cleanser and removing it at night with a microfiber face cloth is exfoliation in itself and a good place to start if you don't currently do it.
  1. If you do dive into chemical exfoliation, start light and work your way up - something like a mandelic acid toner once or twice a week.
  1. A serum before your moisturizer, one with vitamin c or niacinamide, would be an idea if you're not a fan of your hyperpigmentation. The inkey list and byoma both have more affordable options if you don't want to splurge on something until you know you like the ingredients on your skin.
  1. Your moisturiser makes a big impact. Someone mentioned cerave spf50 and id agree, its lower price compared to moisturisers performing at the same level.
  1. The biggest thing is to let your moisturiser absorb before applying make-up. Try to wait at least 5 mins, otherwise you'll almost always get that separation you're seeing now.

Then in terms of foundation, if you're using a brush make sure you're only using a little amount, well buffed into the brush from your hand. Start from the outside in a buffing, dabbing motion and use less than you think you need, only really concentrating in the areas you think you need it. That way you can build up slowly and avoid a mask like finish where your lovely texture and tone disappear.

Princessfluffy · 17/07/2025 07:36

I also think you look lovely without make up and I’d think twice about wearing any at all OP, you are so naturally pretty.

Stormsabrewing · 17/07/2025 07:42

I've found as I've got older foundation doesn't suit me as much. I now use the Eborian CC cream instead. You could try a tretinoin prescription from Skin and Me or Dermologica. I have also found that using Eborian Skin Therapy before bed or Avene Cicalfate before makeup makes Skin look really glowy and hydrated. And make sure you use a primer under foundation. The Supergloop Glow Screen is really good.

PeonyBulb · 17/07/2025 11:59

If you’re going to buy items from scratch

I’d advise some

Garnier Micellar water or Bioderma (pricey in UK) to cleanse (pink lid)
a face wash - I use Dermalogica Special cleanse and or cleanser balm I use a Boots one in a tub not tube
so I use the balm to remove make up followed by the dermalogica (mainly though due to tiredness I remove with Micellar water )
You could use a Cerave face wash
Boots No 7 moisturiser - I like the restore and renew range but you can try any Boots one or Neutrogena Hydro boost water cream not gel as it’s a bit richer but both are good and sink in well
Boots No 7 Stay perfect foundation for better cover or Boots Hydroluminous

I don’t want to advise higher end items because I don’t know your budget and I know the Boots items work really well.

I do use acids regularly so if you’d like to go down that route then Ren AHA is an excellent start and easy to buy. I use Alpha H and Paula’s Choice BHA and Tret but I’m very into my skincare.

I also love using my Mario Badescu Facial mists especially the rose water one

I have tried many skin care products so I know these ones work and will hopefully help you

Blueskies3 · 17/07/2025 12:02

I think you look lovely!

PeonyBulb · 17/07/2025 12:04

I forgot to add that I often use a facial oil at night and a serum before the oil or moisturiser and I use Tret every 3-4 days but we’re focusing on your foundation for now but a skincare routine does help moving forward
