Can I cut my curly wavy hair ?

I haven’t had my hair cut for about 6 months as I’ve been recovering at home from a big operation . It’s thick and curly/ wavy and it is quite bushy at the sides. When I do go to the hairdresser I’m often disappointed in the cut - too thinned out or uneven or too short etc So I’m wondering if I could do it myself by cutting some of the length off then trying a mumsnet cut or unicorn cut is not take too much off to start with.

What do you think yes or leave it well alone? Or go to a proper hairdresser?

Have curly hair gave up on hairdressers 10 years ago. Do a pineapple cut…learnt via mumsnet and looks fine. Every hairdresser either ruined it or there was no discernible difference so a lot of money wasted.

roundthebends · 14/07/2025 22:18

Thanks What’s a pineapple cut? I’ve virtually given up on hairdressers too

I have curly hair, I cut my own.

I use Manes by Mel method on YouTube.

Enko · 15/07/2025 06:45

You need a hair dresser with curley hair themselves. Took us years to find dd1 one but once we did the difference in her hair cuts was amazing. She now travels 1.5 hours to get her hair done but is happy with the result. (She moved and refuses to change hair dresser who is in the town we live in)

Fedupandstressed · 15/07/2025 06:48

I go to a curly hair specialist. Costs a small fortune but I go every 2 months and have to travel, but so worth it. I can let you know who they are if you’re in the midlands.

roundthebends · 15/07/2025 08:15

@fedupandstressedI’m in midlands too, can you give me y the name of your curly hairdresser. Thanks

My daughters either cut their own hair or each others. My son has found a female barber who he trusts so he uses her and follows her when she moves shop.

This!

My hairdresser has curly hair and wears it curly much of the time. I found her by asking for recommendations on local social media. She's mobile too which is even better.

Thick wavy/ curly needs layering but not thinning.

I'm starting to suspect that wavy or curly hair is actually more common than properly straight hair. It is absolutely insane that so few hairdressers can properly deal with it.

roundthebends · 15/07/2025 11:21

I m so fed up with hairdressers hence me thinking I could try doing it myself. I can’t help thinking that if you’re a good, well trained hairdresser you should be able to do all types of hair including curly or straight hair. I’ve been to curly hair specialists and have come away disappointed and feeling like I’ve been slightly cheated, it feels a bit like emperors new clothes, I might be completely wrong. I’ve been to hairdressers who are level 3 and come away with uneven hair or too short, too thinned out. I’ve had my hair straightened before they cut it. I’m not an awkward person or after anything unusual I just want a decent haircut

My husband has been cutting my hair for the last 10 years or so since a dreadful haircut (asked for just a trim + no layers, ended up with many layers in a sort of mushroom shape around my head) that made me cry. He's very good and cheap too!

mondaytosunday · 15/07/2025 12:50

Ugh I feel you! I moved back to London four years ago and thought there must be a stylist who can manage my hair…. I’ve tried £90 haircuts, £35 haircuts, top trained chain salons, small independents, after five different stylists (gave most of them a couple tries) I’ve gone back to my old one in the Isle of Wight. She has dead straight hair nothing like mine but she is the best stylist I’ve ever had (I get a choppy bob). She’s worth the 70 miles plus ferry!

PandoraSocks · 15/07/2025 13:06

Look up Wayne Tuggle cut for curly hair. It us dead simple and works.

PandoraSocks · 15/07/2025 13:07

Very few hairdressers can cut curly hair well IMHO.

I endorse Spring in Birmingham too. I travel from Kent and it's worth it!

I travel a lot for work, and try and get my hair cut when I'm away from home to minimise time away from the kids, so have learned to choose hairdressers.

A good hairdresser can be great and there are lots around. I pay a lot and only get my hair cut by very senior stylists in very good salons. I normally have shoulder length hair with layers that can be worn curly or straight.

I hate the curly hairdresser with their lay flat chairs and hour-long diffusing sessions. Firstly, it hurts my neck. Secondly, the cut is super wonky if I want to wear it straight. They put so much product my hair feels like plastic (yes, even after I 'scrunch the crunch')

That said, last week I was trying to save time and asked the very young but competent hairdresser who does my colour to tidy up the back of my shoulder-length hair. She cut it dry and when I saw what was happening I asked her to stop. When I got home, I had to fix it myself. I am now aggressively straightening a shorter than chin-length bob.

I kind of like the swingy bob for summer. I've never had one, and it's fun and feels interesting. But clearly it's going to be a disaster in the rain.

You could try yourself and then get help if it all goes wrong

It is

I cut my own, mum did it for a while but can't now. It's not a lot different to a hairdresser.

Thanks for all your comments, recommendations and advice.

I’m still dithering about whether to try to cut my hair myself or search again for a hairdresser who can cut curly wavy hair.

Yep feel your pain - especially straightening before cutting - how lazy and daft can you get.

Mauvehoodie · 16/07/2025 13:34

I've been cutting mine for a few years now and definitely recommend it. I got so fed up with hairdressers going "we'll keep the layers long to drag out the curls..." even if I said I was perfectly happy with the curls and didn't want to "drag them down". Then they'd give me basically a one length cut, no layers at all so it was a triangle shape. I'd then feel bad hacking some layers into a cut that cost me £50!

I'd get hairdressing scissors (mine are from Amazon, I think they were £12.50) and watch a few Youtube videos. I always bring each side round to the front and cut around an inch off the bottom then get DP to brush down at the back and check it's even (sometimes there's a bit of a longer "tail" at the very back). Then I do a unicorn but pony tailing the hair right on top of my head to get a few layers at the back as well. Then take a smaller section of the top hair and do a unicorn at the front to get some face framing pieces. I also see how it looks when dry and do a little bit more snipping individual curls/layers at the side till I get the shape I want.

I'd take a really small amount off at first and see how it washes then do more cutting if needed. The benefit of doing it at home is you can do it a bit at a time. Good luck!

dudsville · 16/07/2025 13:40

Why do they think they need to thin it out? It never comes out well. I am another one who gave up on the hairdressers about a decade ago. I get compliments on my hair. It is possible to do a good job. I do the unicorn/pineapple thing.

dudsville · 16/07/2025 13:42

Also, it's now 5 min out of my life, as opposed to travel there and back, needless sitting around between wash and cut, over styling and too long with the hairdryer, only to come out looking like someone else and being overwhelmed by the hairdresser trying to offer friendly chat that I can't hear and don't want to engage in.

FestivusMiracle · 16/07/2025 15:12

I have long thick curly hair. I used to
go to a curly hair specialist but she’s no longer in London. So I bought hairdressing scissors and I now cut it myself using that 2 ponytail method. I then shape it a bit around the front.

I can honestly say it looks just as good and it saves me £170 and the train fare there and back.
