Do you have enough space for all your clothes?

Whataday25 · 06/07/2025 09:15

I have a wardrobe and a half - wardrobe one for tops, skirts and dresses and the half for coats and jackets. Then I have two shelves - one for trousers and a top shelf for out of season clothes. I have had a big sort out and tried on every single thing last night, most of which I am keeping!

I would love to have more space so I could organise it all better as everything is crammed in together with no room for any more. I am not buying anything new for some time as I have more than enough.

How do you organise your clothes and do you have enough room?

Could the coats and jackets go downstairs?

Geneticsbunny · 06/07/2025 09:39

If it then maybe move some things to a chest of drawers?

Cheeseplantandcrackers · 06/07/2025 09:41

Nope! I need a massive sort out.

ScreamingBeans · 06/07/2025 09:45

No I don't. All of us have more clothes than the average medieval Queen. I'm drowning in them.

My solution has been to cull as many as I can, get rid of all the ones that don't fit me so that I don't have to store any and think about buying a pax wardrobe. But I'm still mulling that one over.

anyzen · 06/07/2025 09:46

I'm getting there following a massive cull over the past year or so. Slowly but surely got rid of stuff I had kept, but deep down knew I wouldn't use. The charity shops benefitted from that.

I'm not there fully yet, but have good wardrobe space since I live on my own. But the fact that I have more space just makes it look like it's organised and it's not really!

I am trying to keep my own room for day to day stuff, shoes etc. The spare bedroom is for "good" wear and holiday clothes. Also in there is out of season stuff and jackets/coats/shoes/boots/bags.

Yep I think I need to keep going on the clearing out. But I have to discipline myself not to buy more aswell!

WonderingWanda · 06/07/2025 09:47

I didn't in my old house so had a system where I took out winter / summer specific items e.g. big woollen jumpers and boots vs sun dresses short and sandals and did a swap over. The out of season items were stored in the loft.

DappledThings · 06/07/2025 09:49

Yes, other that coats which stay downstairs everything fits in the wardrobe and 2 drawers.

Never had so many that I understood the concept of season specific things going into storage and being rotated. But then hardly any of my wardrobe is season specific. It's mostly adding or removing layers to the same main items.

dudsville · 06/07/2025 09:51

I managed a few years back to get down to where I no longer need to swap out for seasonal clothing, but that took years of twice yearly clearouts and honing my style.

3KidsPlusDdog · 06/07/2025 09:52

@WonderingWanda Thats what I do. I boxed up all my winter clothes, and will do the same with summer clothes in September or so.

I keep a lot of holiday clothes in suitcases (genius idea from my friend) and just give them a quick wash to freshen them up before a holiday.

My more formal dresses and good clothes are permanently hanging.

diterictur · 06/07/2025 09:53

Haha no.

I have one full chest of drawers, one small size set of drawers, 2 wardrobes and our ottoman bed also has storage some of which has more of my clothes.. and my coats are mostly in the under stairs cupboard. It's all full!

A large part of my problem is that my weight fluctuates so I have clothing from 12-18. Something I am currently trying to do is sort through it and put away clothes that are too big or two small so the drawers and wardrobe only have the clothing that currently fits.

TizerorFizz · 06/07/2025 09:54

I have loft storage for pullovers and boots and winter coats. Then swap summer things in during Sept/Oct depending on weather. Coat storage - we have a hallway wardrobe.

NancyJoan · 06/07/2025 09:54

No. I have so, so many clothes. And however many I clear, still more. Current status: drawers and wardrobes stuffed full, and the regularly worn items in a heap on top/over the end of the bed.

Kitchenbattle · 06/07/2025 09:56

This is the space we have between us my clothes in the right and dps on the left. It’s plenty for us.

Do you have enough space for all your clothes?
speroku · 06/07/2025 09:57

I've got a bit of hanging space and two large drawers. I store the off-season in those zip up cubes and when I do the swap if there's anything I haven't worn during the season (and I'm not particularly attached to) then I get rid of it. I've probably got fewer clothes than most people but I do actually wear them all.

Daffodilsarefading · 06/07/2025 09:57

No I have to store out of season clothes in the loft.

Jumpthewaves · 06/07/2025 09:58

No, but I've just ordered proper size wardrobes and with a good clear out it should then be fine (I hope!)

forthistimeonly · 06/07/2025 09:59

No. I pay £145 pm to store my out of season clothes and footwear as I can't fit them into my two double wardrobes! I do really need another cull

theresnolimits · 06/07/2025 10:01

I have a ‘one in, one out rule’. If I buy something new, something has to go. That way I always have space.

Tinytimmy123 · 06/07/2025 10:05

Hoarder here. But it has paid off at least for my younger female relatives ( nieces) who have benefited from their 'vintage' hand me downs. Their frienda are very envious as they cant be bought anywhere else. Sadly while the clothes lasted, my body didn't! 😁

Some of the clothes that I bought in the 90s i kept because I knew they would be classic styles that didnt age. What I've noticed is that the quality was so much better from the high street then, than it is today. Sizing completely different too!

Hendil · 06/07/2025 10:11

I do, but only since DS moved out

PennyAnnLane · 06/07/2025 10:15

I was just wondering the same, I’ve just ordered a bigger chest of drawers as my current system relies on about a weeks worth of clothes being in the washing pile or I don’t have enough space!

Whataday25 · 06/07/2025 10:43

We only have a tiny porch with a few hooks so I keep a couple of everyday coats there but with dc’s coats as well and all our shoes on a rack there is no extra space.

@ScreamingBeans the average medieval Queen 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Read a book recently where a character was packing to move house and everything fit in one small suitcase. Two dresses, one pair of shoes other than the one on her feet, couple of slips and nylons, a jumper, headscarves and a coat. Can't even imagine! I have a 1.5 metre wide wardrobe with the regular clothes in, 4 kallax boxes with PJ's, sports wear and seasonal items, plus a huge trunk of stuff I'm giving till Christmas and if I haven't shifted the baby weight I'll go through and bid it adieu.

Packing for a move at the moment, have put everything I don't wear regularly into suitcases and just kept a few things out. It's 1/4 of my wardrobe. Really shows that we can get away with far far less!!

Headfullofbees · 06/07/2025 10:53

@Whataday25 I only keep the coats for the season on the rack, the rest are in vacuum bags under the bed. Gets a bit loaded in autumn/spring when you need access to everything as the weather changes, but otherwise it's out of the way for a good few months of the year. Would that help? Likewise in the wardrobe, I swap out seasonal stuff. At the moment it's all lightweight cover ups, shorts, summer dresses etc and the knitwear is all packed away. It's a bit of a faff, but means there's more space in the wardrobe. Also it's quite a nice mindful activity swapping everything over. The duvets change, put a net curtain at the french doors to keep the flies out and switch the clothes around, then do all that in reverse. Marks the seasons nicely.

Whataday25 · 06/07/2025 10:57

I've never used the vacuum bags but that’s a really good idea to keep everything tidy and out of the way. Just googled and they do them in Ikea and Argos which are both near me!
