Do you have enough space for all your clothes?

Whataday25 · 06/07/2025 09:15

I have a wardrobe and a half - wardrobe one for tops, skirts and dresses and the half for coats and jackets. Then I have two shelves - one for trousers and a top shelf for out of season clothes. I have had a big sort out and tried on every single thing last night, most of which I am keeping!

I would love to have more space so I could organise it all better as everything is crammed in together with no room for any more. I am not buying anything new for some time as I have more than enough.

How do you organise your clothes and do you have enough room?

I have enough space....but only because I have 3 bedrooms to spread out in!

2 hanging wardrobes and 1 with shelving (and out of season clothes stored above) is the main part.
Then in another bedroom I have a long rail for coats (also bags and shoes stored here) and another smaller one for big cardies and things that arent clean or dirty iykwim, also a chest of drawers with nightclothes.
Then downstairs more shoes, scarves/hair accessories and everyday bags in a giant bookcase and everyday coats hanging off the door.

I have far too many clothes and not enough space. When my eldest two DC moved out I took over their wardrobes. I did a cull recently but I really must do another.

suki1964 · 06/07/2025 14:10

I do - since I had a cull and learned to fold

I have a double free standing wardrobe - fitted in Ikea baskets to one side - they hold tonnes - hats and scarves, night wear, shape wear, fascinators , clutch bags etc - stuff not worn a lot but comes in handy to have . I also swapped out hangers for those thin velvet hangers - so much space reclaimed. Hang skirts and tops above the drawers, dresses, dress clothes to the other side

Chest of drawer. - leggings, jeans jumpers, tees. Bedside - socks, knickers and bras

Coats were the hardest place to find a home for so an expanding pole put in an alcove in the back bedroom sorted that

But learning to fold and stand clothes in drawers really has saved me so much room

I’m ruthless with clothes and like @theresnolimits operate a one in one out rule so that my ‘collection’ does not grow over time. Absolutely love seeing everything I own in one glance.

im worked quite hard to get here. Wear a limited palette of colours so my shoes, belts, bags and other accessories all work with everything. Don’t need to buy accessories anytime a buy a new item because it will all work together.

saves time, money and though I say do who ought not boast am always well dressed. Even my sports clothes look good and are a pleasure to wear.

it’s been my ambition from when I first started working and needed to buy reasonably expensive ‘work clothes’. I don’t want to waste money on things I won’t warmed or wear things I don’t enjoy. Still sometimes forget and find my meter caught by something snd tempted to put it in ‘my basket’. Deciding what I need to throw out to make room usually sorts me out.

LaurieFairyCake · 06/07/2025 14:46

I have 16 rails of clothes, 64 full drawers and 20 of those bags that have the air sucked out. I’ve got rid of 15 full sackfuls of clothes and to get rid of half the above ^^

its a complete nightmare but this is what happens when you go from a size 20 to a size 6. 🤦‍♀️

I have to sell the above as I’ve had to spend so much on clothes, the first 15 sacks I took to the charity shop.

reversegear · 06/07/2025 14:48

I have a flip up bed for winter and summer rotation and just on wardrobe and 3 draws.. I put shoes and boots in boxes and clear out most years, I think I’d like to have more room but have got used to a small cottage now, so feel like I don’t own anything I don’t wear regularly.

lindyloo57 · 06/07/2025 18:22

I have to many clothes, I have 3 double wardrobes in spare bedroom, I holds dresses long cardigans and shirts, one has half with jackets/ blazers other half strappy shorter dresses and playsuits, other wardrobe has all my tops long sleeves to vest tops and it has 3 drawers below which holds thermals, jeans and wool jumpers, also 2 chest of drawers for other things and a coat cupboard in another bedroom, we are sell our house downsizing to a 2 bed so I have to start to declutter.

Whataday25 · 06/07/2025 18:58

Wow some people have a lot of clothes and a lot of space for them!

I also downsized to a 2 bed and can’t make any more space so need to keep on top of the volume!

No I don't. All of us have more clothes than the average medieval Queen. I'm drowning in them.

My solution has been to cull as many as I can, get rid of all the ones that don't fit me so that I don't have to store any and think about buying a pax wardrobe. But I'm still mulling that one over.

pax wardrobes look good

well done on doing that! I lost a lot of weight and barely treated myself to anything new. I never felt I was good enough, you should be proud of your acheivement.

what will you do with the old things? my husband is a hoarder and ownt even let me get rid of my own old stuff

LunaTheCat · 10/02/2026 22:16

No I don’t. I store off season clothes in big flat boxes under our bed.
I have an old fashioned wardrobe with a rail and no other storage .. it is jam packed.
I have a chest of draws which stores t shirts , undies some knitwear.
When did we go to having this many clothes ! Its happened during my lifetime. I think when I was a student with less money and less clothes .. I shopped 2nd hand and was more creative.
I have a lifelong love clothes .. I like to express myself each day. I have just been like a child in a sweet shop as I have adulted.
The poster paying to have off season clothes stored .. I feel for you .. but that’s mad .. we are all mad!
Now I think of the time it takes to maintain and store my clothes.. I would rather do other things with that time.
I was browsing second hand website before.. saw a lovely silk shirt from my favourite local designer .. no, I don’t need another shirt do managed not to hit “buy now”

JustauseraskinganotheruserWTF · 11/02/2026 09:02

Not particularly I do manage to keep it within the wardrobes I've got but there's hardly any space to see anything.

Hedgesgalore · 11/02/2026 09:30

I do now, dc have moved out and I've moved over my summer clothes, gym stuff and coats to their room.

The walk in wardrobe in my bedroom has two large hanging rails and four shelves, they are full as well as the bottom and top of the wardrobe.

I'd recommend getting flock hangers (Home Bargains are the cheapest) to save space in your wardrobe. I hang as much as I can, they are stored in colour order. One hanging rail is just blues/navy. I have tubs on the shelves holding folded jeans/trousers, pjs. My underwear is stored on one shelf with three tubs, bras, knicks & thermals, socks (I have a lot of socks).

In our old house I used to store out of season stuff in underbed storage bags. Then swap stuff out.

Another thing I do regularly is to turn my hangers around so I can work out if I've worn it. If not in two years it gets donated and I am quite ruthless going through every season and culling.

catin8oot5 · 11/02/2026 09:38

I had a huge cull at the weekend and threw out three baskets of clothes.

Everything I own now fits in one built in wardrobe (large single) 2 chests of drawers and drawers under the bed.

Coats are in a cupboard downstairs.

Sundaynightterrors · 11/02/2026 09:47

We live in a tiny cottage (used to be in a very large 5 bed house when with exH) and I have 1 rail and two small shelves for my clothes. This contains virtually all my clothes both summer and winter. We do have some coat storage downstairs but again this is small. I have one very posh dress bagged and stored in the loft but everything else now fits (just about) in the space I have. I have discovered that I only wear a small amount of clothes and try not to buy anything without getting rid of something else. I do need to do a bit of a diet and am now quite ruthless about not keeping things.

itsthetea · 11/02/2026 09:49

One basket for jumpers in bottoms of wardrobe

one drawer under bed for PJs and gym kit

2 drawers for undies ( DH has the other two)

walking kit hangs on LHS ( need enough for a week summer and winter ) and ordinary clothes on RHS or wardrobe

top shelf of wardrobe is household stuff
coats in hall cupboard

less clothes I suspect

can’t imagine needing so many clothes

and certainly can’t imagine the process to acquire so many - I shop at least once a year to replace stuff that’s worn out and that’s trauma !

PersephonePomegranate · 11/02/2026 09:51

I have to do the seasonal swap. My bedroom just isn't big enough to have anything more than a standard sized wardrobe and I only have one stargaze cupboard in the house thst houses all the clothes!
