Black floor length silk dress with dimante spaghetti straps

Notexactlyasplanned · 05/07/2025 17:59

Blue taffeta ball gown: fitted bodice and puff sleeves; and probably a lot of eyeliner and big hair #peak 80s.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 05/07/2025 18:06

We didn’t have one! 1992

Xiaoxiong · 05/07/2025 18:07

Strappy mini dress and big platform sandals from Chinese Laundry! I probably had little butterfly clips in my hair too. Ah, the late 90s/early 00s....

Whataday25 · 05/07/2025 18:08

Didn’t have one. No such things as school proms or balls back in the day!

3678194b · 05/07/2025 18:12

Didn't have one either.

I think it's more a new thing. Schools around here didn't start holding proms/balls until around 2010 onwards.

I had a 5th year leaver's party in 1989. My mum made me a proper boned ball gown with a corset front, green shot silk with black lace. It was pretty nice and not dissimilar to prom dresses these days, just a lot less boob or legs. I had big hair and hoop earrings. We also had a sixth form leavers ball and I wore a dusky pink off the shoulder fitted dress.

PrincessOfPreschool · 05/07/2025 18:13

Ps. I went to a state school in a 'new town', not a posh school or posh area!

DemonsandMosquitoes · 05/07/2025 18:14

It was 1988. Church hall. A white knee length straight skirt and a pin stripe white and navy button up blouse. Both from C&A. White sling backs. A lot of hairspray!

mathanxiety · 05/07/2025 18:15

Debs in Ireland early 1980s - 50s style ballgown in white, countless yards of tulle underskirt, white stilettoes. White dresses were the rule back then.

gingercat02 · 05/07/2025 18:16

1987, 6th form formal. Jade shot taffeta ball dress. I loved it so much

Muchtoomuchtodo · 05/07/2025 18:16

We didn’t have one. English state school. 1992

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/07/2025 18:16

Black mini-dress with gold and silver embroidery. Very goth (but also beautiful). ALL the black eyeliner. Dodgy nightclub in South Laaadon.

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 05/07/2025 18:17

I left school in 1996. There was no do, we just left…

It was 6th form college though. If that makes a difference.

DrCoconut · 05/07/2025 18:18

Jeans and T shirt if I remember correctly. It was just a school disco with a few sausage rolls and lukewarm squash. Nothing like leavers' dos now. My DS has already announced that he isn't going to his in two years time as it's all an expensive faff.

VenusClapTrap · 05/07/2025 18:20

There wasn’t one. 1992, northern private school. We did walk down to the pub at the end of the road for an awkward drink with some of the teachers though. I would have loved a prom.

shellyleppard · 05/07/2025 18:21

School uniform....left in 1985

Prayingforananswer · 05/07/2025 18:25

1970's sixth form leavers do at a posh hotel. Red mini dress, block heels just like what's popular now, and Twiggy style hair cut.

Floisme · 05/07/2025 18:26

We had a do but no-one called it a prom or a ball. State school, 1970s.
I wore Laura Ashley - the full milkmaid look.

RachelsPeeves · 05/07/2025 18:29

A ball gown from the only shop in Bath that was acceptable. They also offered dresses for hire but that was a massive no-no.

It was like real life Rivals. People arrived on anything from tractors to Porsches and Maserati. (Not a public school, just rural with parents who had (mostly) more money than sense)

ginasevern · 05/07/2025 18:30

I left school at 16 in 1973. My friend and I noticed that there were cakes and coffee being served for "leavers" in the assembly hall, so we wandered in. A rather snotty teacher told us it was only for sixth form leavers. I'll never forget that. We were quite deflated. So we just wandered out onto the street, looked at each other and said "well that's the end of that then".

Zen · 05/07/2025 18:35

A long black chiffon shirt dress and doc martens. 6th form prom 1994.

ladymalfoy45 · 05/07/2025 18:36

A mint dress from Miss. Selfridge. Red with a wide black stripe from neck to knee.
I looked like I was in Star Trek The Next Generation but my mates didn't know what that was. I felt amazing.
This was 1990.
ETA it was mint dress, like brilliant ,not Mint the label.

We didn't have that kind of thing when I was 18 in the summer of 1972. We did our own things with our friends though and at that time I was joining them in a student-type pub where people drank cheap cider and Barley Wine or scored weed and acid.

That summer I was wearing boho maxi skirts, Indian cotton embroidered tops, vintage velvet jackets, loads of Indian silver jewellery, pale Almay foundation, black eyeliner and a very dark purple lipstick (I think it was Black Tulip by Biba, which was sold in Dorothy Perkins). My scent would have been Patchouli Oil or Intimate by Revlon for a special night out.

My footwear was Dr Scholl's wooden sandals or over the knee lilac canvas boots (again by Biba I think). My handbag was home-made from scraps of leather and suede with a long plaited strap and fringing on the bottom.

Other possibilities for a celebratory night out that summer included a vintage bias-cut 1930s black crepe dress, a home-made black chiffon maxi dress (think Morticia Addams) and a home-made full length, gold velvet coat (Regency Style) with frogging fasteners. I also had some Edwardian lace-up short boots.
