Another wedding guest dress one

SIL is getting married in a Scottish castle next month; the men in the wedding party (including DH) are in navy tuxes.

What's the verdict on any of these dresses? Or does anyone have any other recommendations? I am also thinking about tulle skirts, but struggling to find tops that would work with them.

I'm early 40s, size 8 mainly (sometimes 10), 5'4, but completely carrot-shaped - wider shoulders and my hips are totally non-existent 🤣

So the v-neck, A-line/skater style is very much the style that suits me best. Pencil or shapeless dresses do absolutely nothing for me.

Would like long sleeves and I'm also quite petite so maxi and dresses with lots of excess material completely drown me.

I tried this on for a wedding it just hangs weird I didn't like it at all .

OopsieeDaisy · 05/07/2025 23:19

How about something like this? Although this one depends on whether you mind polyester but it’s lovely! (And I still think number 2 from your OP is nice).

3

TwigletsAndRadishes · 06/07/2025 06:04

I'm not wowed by any of them but they are all fairly similar so you obviously know your own style and what you are comfortable with.

2 and 3 are by far the nicest. 2 is a bland colour but a pretty shape. Quite elegant/classic but bordering on frumpy. I prefer number 3 although it would be better if it were not quite so short.

Number 2 - the damson coloured knee-length one with the blue and white flowers. It's stand out nicer than the others imho. Lovely.

I agree it is by far the nicest, but is it suitable for a navy tux wedding? I’m guessing the op means navy black tie. I’ve never seen that and weddings I’ve been to in Kundun have all been kilts, but it suggests evening wear, not summer dresses.

Have you tried Ghost? This is lovely

The OP is 5 foot 4 - well outside petite ranges. (I’m 5’3 and have never worn anything from them.)

Navy, retro, with a bit of tartan?

I'm your shape and this would suit me.

LOVE this!

Thank you, yes... When I say petite, I meant my bone structure. My 9-year-old DC's wrists are bigger than mine 🤣

I’m 42 and sorry but these dresses are really frumpy and old fashioned

Do you have alternative suggestions? The dresses are entirely wedding appropriate

How about this?

@poetryandwine Thanks. Yes, more neutral/softer colours suit me. I don't really suit brights/neon colours.

That’s such a lovely dress option — perfect for a summer wedding! I’ve been loving the idea of pairing lighter floral dresses with a soft custom cashmere wrap from Cashmere Custom for when the evening gets cooler. Keeps it elegant but still comfy. Hope you have the best time at the wedding!

No. 3 for me out of the above. No.1 has very 80s vibes. Nos. 4 and 5 are nothing special. No. 2 would be my second choice but feels quite staid and could be worn by MOB.

Number 3 is ok. The rest do indeed look like the sort of dresses that appear in free catalogues that come with papers like The Sunday Telegraph.

No budget given so to keep it afforable I'd look at Sister Jane; if budget is higher Alémais or Stine Goya or if unlimited Erdem or Zimmerman.

MayIDestroyYou · 06/07/2025 11:55

OP’s budget is up to £150; preferably no more than £100.

Thanks, saw that after I'd posted! I don't like any of the OP's choices or most of the alternatives other than yours or owlexpress.

On that budget definitely Sister Jane or Nobody's Child and Joannie.

that's why I also suggest renting. loads of rental platform sites now offering designer dresses to rent at low prices. outfits for weddings are hardly ever worn again. so renting is a good option
also vinted and second hand reseller sites always have amazing selection of clothes

Never thought I'd recommend Monsoon but this is gorgeous, and a bit more muted if that's your preference

This is the nicest one posted on this thread so far, in my opinion.

Thank you, though people are generally just recommending things that would suit themselves. It looks shapeless and would just hang off me.. And if you check the reviews, other people say the same. The only person who recommends it is the person who says she's "curvy"!
