Need help deciphering dress code!

I have a wedding next weekend which has quite a complex dress code; from what I can surmise it is ‘American black tie’ (the bride is American) however the venue is outside in Scotland so this is also stipulated in the invite. The bride has requested only satin, silk, crepe or taffeta.

Can anyone please help me decipher the dress code and suggest a suitable dress? I’m pregnant, 16 weeks but showing as it’s not my first baby. I don’t want to spend much at all if I can help it so will happily trawl vinted but I don’t even know what style of dress I’m looking for! Everything long and in chiffon or satin looks bridesmaid-y to me.

With a dress so restrictive the bride can’t complain if she’s upstaged.

This is fab! Go for it!

'It’s the type of black tie for toasting champagne in a country garden or being thrown around the dance floor’ - isn't that code for posh/dressy and confirms the look. I think other PP are right about American Black tie, if OH is in full on black tie and tux and they have specified materials for dresses - longer dress is better, a midi would have to be pretty special and deffo nothing short, so midaxi at least. The Seasalt dress is too casual, but the H&M one looks more in keeping. No one will know if you are wearing real silk or satin, I think they are just trying to empahsise the dressiness - so not jersey or spandex! Think "evening gown" rather than poofy balldress.

The weather issue is something else again. The guests in the main pic on this website match the vibe I think?

I can't believe they've specified what material your dress has to be made from. Just when you thought you'd heard everything! I realise that's not helping you to work out what to wear, but my flabber is well and truly ghasted!

Me too, that is ridiculous!!

RampantIvy · 05/07/2025 10:39

Won't the look be spoiled when you cover it up with a waterproof parka? 😁
Joking apart, whatever you choose you will need something warm and probably waterproof anyway.

In terms of the material, I would just ignore the request, and if challenged I would just say that I was not there to be an extra in a photoshoot.

I have the seasalt dress above and it’s really comfortable to wear, i would just pick something cheap off amazon - check delivery frame carefully though

What size are you (if you don't mind saying)@Rituals1? I have an unworn Monsoon silk empire line maxi dress in a (pre vanity sized) 16 that is probably better for a 12 or small 14. I was going to put it on Vinted but you are welcome to it. Like this

How odd that a dress code that specific and restrictive doesn't actually say anything about colour.
So you could rock up in tangerine, mustard yellow, electric blue, fuschia or scarlet?
i think i'd be tempted to consult with some other guests to see what you could come up with in terms of purple, cerise and Tango Orange. Or alternatively, all black.
Just saying.
(edit to fix typos.)

The pity of it is that ‘wedding in Scotland’ and ‘outside’ suggest a ceilidh - but the dress code would be inimical to that, thus cutting out the most obvious form of actual fun for the day. 🤷‍♀️

Hadalifeonce · 05/07/2025 11:35

When I got married, I did not notice what anyone, apart from my bridesmaids, were wearing.
I think demanding what colour, what style and material your guests are clothed in, is appalling.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 05/07/2025 12:14

The bride has requested only satin, silk, crepe or taffeta.

So nylon tat from Shein would pass but Eponine London's exquisite 4 figure price, made to order cotton dresses (several of which were at Harry and Megan's wedding) wouldn't ?

Or Suzannah London would also fail?

PigletJohn · 05/07/2025 12:23

I can't help wondering if she has ever been to Scotland.

Outdoors wedding? You would be wise to take a long raincoat and rain hat. Possibly galoshes. You will need plenty of midge repellent and I would dose up on antihistamine tablets.

I understand parts of US can be warm and dry in Summer.

Fairywingsandroses · 05/07/2025 12:43

This dress code would be my perfect excuse for refusing to go…

invite then says ‘It’s the type of black tie for toasting champagne in a country garden or being thrown around the dance floor’

Well, they think they’re special, don’t they?

I’d be tempted to go with a re-wear and a big coat.

It doesn't even make sense. "Toasting champagne"??? I suppose she means where toasts are made in champagne but "toasting champagne" is nonsense.

The second part is even more meaningless.

This is silk, and very look at me, no not at her , me.

Very loose fitting- the xs fits me as a 14.

Can you be sure you’ll get the dress in time from Vinted?
