Evening guest (November wedding)

I’ve lost 5 stone this year and suddenly have a body that I’m enjoying dressing.

Would this dress work for a November wedding? I’m an evening only guest along with other colleagues. I’m actually wearing the same dress (in the sage green version) as a bridesmaid this summer so I know it suits me (but guess I’m worrying the navy one is too dressy for a wedding guest?) The wedding is at a hotel.

Thanks so much.

I think it is a lovely dress, but it is more dressy than I would wear to the evening party of a wedding.
Apart from anything else, I would worry about being mistaken for a bridesmaid.

StarCourt · 02/07/2025 00:31

what a gorgeous elegant dress

TinglyandCurious · 02/07/2025 06:34

@CarpetKnees in my heart I know you’re right! Thank you. I’ll think again. I wish I went to events that would justify wearing a dress like this.

@StarCourt isnt it! I wish I could buy it just in case a fancy event comes up but as a mother of two small children I can’t see it happening any time soon 😂

Conversely, I don’t like the dress at all but think it’s perfectly suitable for an evening wedding reception.

Doggymummar · 02/07/2025 07:52

Not a fan, evening did I have been to are generally casual events. More jeans and a nice top.

LightCameraBitchSmile · 02/07/2025 08:32

Too dressy for an evening event but it’s beautiful. I don’t know of any wedding where jeans would have been acceptable for an evening guest though. A happy middle to be found I think!

TinglyandCurious · 02/07/2025 08:42

Thanks all, definitely won’t be in jeans but maybe a nice maxi skirt and fitted top combo. Love a winter wedding.

Eh? So you have half the guests in formal wedding finery and half in jeans? I have never seen that.

OP i agree dress is perfectly suitable - midi, maxi and midaxi are the more fashionable lengths now, but the dress is a bit...meh.

TinglyandCurious · 02/07/2025 09:24

Thanks @Mulledjuice. Think I might go for a chiffon maxi skirt and fitted top. I’ve attached a picture of the kind of thing.

The dress is gorgeous, I would wear it, but not for an evening wedding event, for my daughters evening do, I wore a velvet, burgundy, (with bling on ) jumpsuit, with black boots - it was nice to get out of my formal dress etc.
The skirt and top are nice too.
Enjoy the event.

NewShoesForSpring · 02/07/2025 12:22

I think you should get the dress & wear it if you love it op

Im in my 50s & have been to many weddings over the years & i have never ever seen anyone arrive in jeans & a top!!

Nor have I ever seen anyone apart from the bride change outfits for the evening event. And even then that's been rare in my experience

People are dressed for for the wedding & stay dressed!

If that dress is full length on you perhaps have it taken up to ankle length which would make it less bridesmaid like

But I think it's entirely suitable. I think jeans & a top no matter how fancy would be all wrong!

Congrats on the weight loss - that's a fantastic achievement!

Latenightreader · 02/07/2025 12:25

I've been to a couple of weddings as an evening only guest and I'd always wear something dressy! I wouldn't buy something new for the occasion but I think the dress is gorgeous.

Gingercar · 02/07/2025 12:29

I think the dress is lovely and perfectly good for an evening do if you want to wear it. The skirt and top combination is lovely too.

Congratulations on a fabulous weight loss- go enjoy your lovely new figure and clothes (I’m at the start of my weight loss journey).

TinglyandCurious · 02/07/2025 16:54

@NewShoesForSpring thanks for your thoughts! I think I’ll go for the skirt and top combo so I can enjoy the event without worrying (but still feeling nice.) Thank you for the kind words on the weight loss too - it’s so nice to look forward to events now.

@Gingercar Thank you ❤️ Good luck on your weight loss journey too. There is some great support on the weight loss chat boards on here (or weight loss injections board depending on your plan. This is how I’ve done it) Being able to wear clothes I actually like has been a great motivator. You can do it!

Conversely, I don’t like the dress at all and think it’s OTT for an evening wedding reception.

Wilfrida1 · 03/07/2025 06:42

Whatever you decide for the evening reception, if you like that dress, and know it suits you, keep an eye out for it being reduced in a sale. It's a classic which will come in for a future occasion, I am sure.

RampantIvy · 03/07/2025 07:33

"Im in my 50s & have been to many weddings over the years & i have never ever seen anyone arrive in jeans & a top!!"

Neither have I. An evening wedding do is more dressy than that.
I prefer the skirt outfit.

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 03/07/2025 08:39

Given you are wearing the same in a different colour as a bridesmaid should answer your own question surely?

It is an absolutely beautiful dress, but I agree as an evening guest to what sounds like a colleagues wedding as opposed to a friend I would say it is too much.

Goditsmemargaret · 03/07/2025 08:44

I way prefer the skirt outfit OP - show off that new figure!

Oceangrey · 03/07/2025 08:51

Both outfits are nice and suitable in my view.

Beyondburnout · 03/07/2025 10:05

I also think it's ott for me. But if you love it I dont think you'll be out if place. My friends and family must be very low brow as I've seen loads of jeans at wedding receptions and even changed into a more casual outfit for the disco myself. Well done on the weight loss. It's also worth considering how much you body will change over the next few months.

I love the skirt outfit - but would have skirt and top the same colour.

bouncydog · 03/07/2025 15:01

Do you know what the dress code is for the wedding? DD was married in a hotel wedding and dress code was black tie. An evening guest wearing the lovely blue dress you linked to would have been perfectly o.k. However if the dress code is casual then agree with others that it is too dressy. If you can’t establish what the day dress code is, then I would go for something that you will feel is dressy but not overdone nor too casual. I’ve also never been to a wedding as an evening guest and seen anyone in jeans - trousers and smart tops would have been the most casual.

Tablefor4 · 03/07/2025 15:17

Hi - I think either would be fine. I actually had a November wedding in London, and because of the weather and fairly formal ceremony and reception, I think people were a bit smarter or at least in darker colours than for a standard British summer wedding.

AvidJadeShaker · 03/07/2025 17:29

I think both options would be suitable, buy the one you are more likely to get the most wear from.
