London and no clue what to wear

I’m going for a night out in London - daytime clothes are fine.
It’s a bar and meal in the evening. I am struggling for shoes because it’ll be a fair bit of walking I think - even in the evening - so maybe not heels?

I am 40, size 8, 5ft 4ish. Not very attractive generally overall.

Also think it might be quite warm weather.

Any ideas?

Barely anyone wears heels in London- trainers, flat sandals, wedges- anything goes!

Optimustime · 28/06/2025 18:30

Id wear trainers, maxi skirt, nice top, maybe a bold t shirt and a necklace to dress it up a bit. Keep it simple though.

UpMyself · 28/06/2025 18:31

I'd wear a loose dress and trainers in weather like this.

Turmerictolly · 28/06/2025 18:32

Trendy trainers or sandals? Most clubs allow trainers but check just in case. Clubs in London can be ultra glam or totally dressed down or anything in between. Maybe look at the club social media for pictures of what other people are wearing.

ginasevern · 28/06/2025 18:36

Definitely not heels! A nice summer dress (maxi or midi) and sandals or trainers. You could glam it up with some earings/necklace and a nice bag if you want to.

LoserWinner · 28/06/2025 18:39

As someone else said, no-one except ditsy girl tourists wear heels. In this weather, go for lightest possible fabric - it’s jolly hot. Even nice restaurants have a mix of folks dressed up and people in jeans and T shirts, so whatever you are comfortable in.

Ddakji · 28/06/2025 18:41

Crocs. I’m a Londoner and I pretty much live in them all summer.

DesperatelySeekingHelp · 28/06/2025 18:44

Nobody wears heals in London. Trainers will be fine

On a night out though?!

Ive never seen anyone in London wear crocs on a night out and I’ve been here since 2012.

OP trainers or flats, I’ve just headed out to a bar in Camden wearing some khaki floaty harem pants, gold pumps and a black vest top with a beaded trim, if that helps. Bright coloured raffia tote bag. Prob looks a bit noughties but lots of similarly dressed around.

Yes, for a night out. With a midi dress. Ultimately, what the difference between crocs and trainers?

I don’t think I’ve ever got dressed up for a night out in London. Maybe for afternoon tea in The Dorchester.

I have lilac crocs. DD15 has baby pink crocs. We both wear them a lot!

Now you’ve said that I expect I’ll see them everywhere. I’m sure I haven’t yet though! I do see younger people wearing them during the day though.

It’s London, absolutely anything goes. Have a lovely time.

If they’re good enough for David Hockney to meet The King, they’re good enough for a night out! 🤣

For a meal out and a drink - don't think I'd dress up at all. I would wear the same thing as I'd been wearing during the day.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 28/06/2025 19:25

'Not very attractive generally overall'
Sorry to hear you feel that way op. I think a makeover might help. Get hair blow dried and maybe coloured, pop into mac for a free make over if you buy some make up. Use an app to work out which colour clothes suit you bets

xhines · 28/06/2025 19:38

Where in London are you going? Flat sandals would work anywhere.

Same. In any city bar or restaurant I’ve been to in an evening, there’s always been a mixture of causal and dressy. So if it’s just a regular trip with friends then I’d just keep daytime on (unless obviously it’s a posh place with special requirements) but if a bit more informal in evening or friends will be dressing up I think a simple breathable cotton dress and flats like sandals or trainers will do. Just keep a lightweight cardi or wrap in your bag in case it gets a bit nippy later on.

I’ve been wearing these on days and nights out the last couple of weeks. Very comfortable and I can walk for miles.

Ooh, they look lovely. How wide are they? And do they make your feet hot?

It is BOILING here at the mo! Swap the cardi for a handheld fan!

They’re a decent width - I can’t wear narrow shoes but these fit very comfortably. And my feet were not hot in them either. I really like them - they look really nice on with a range of outfits!

lol yes central London in the summer can be pretty sweaty - yes make way for the fan instead then!

SunnieShine · 29/06/2025 09:43

I saw a lot of maxi dresses when i was out and about yesterday. Jump suits are popular too.

No heels.

Tootingbec · 29/06/2025 09:59

Definitely don’t wear heels! Was out last night in London and everyone was in either trainers, flat sandals or not too high wedge sandals. I work in London and go out in the evening and no one totters about in heels anymore - except the odd 22 year old going clubbing. Unless you are going to a very high end restaurant I would go smart trainers or sandals.

FanofLeaves · 29/06/2025 10:36

The only groups of women I see wearing heels are the ones that unload from Liverpool Street arriving for a night of clubbing. IMO it really marks you out as ‘not from London’ (as do the tight clothes, heavy make up that are usual on a night out in other places)
