Wedding guest outfit

I have never posted in S&B before but I do love reading the wedding threads. My style, such as it is, is casual. I am short and quite fat and cannot wear dresses or jumpsuits, even when i was slim, they make me look very dumpy. What works best for my shape are jackets or shirts over trousers. My question is, is this outfit dressy enough for a wedding?

I think you've accidentally posted a photo of some pyjamas

Deadringer · 21/06/2025 13:46

Ah I was worried that it is a bit pyjama-y all right, but I really like it. I find it very hard to find anything that I like, that will fit/suit me.

I think they look great op! You can add some accessories and heels to make it even dressier. It’s all in how you style it.

Doseofreality · 21/06/2025 13:53

How about something like this? Comes in several different colours as well.

Well I really like it, it’s quirky and different and will beat the sea of floral midi dresses you see at weddings. You can always ‘lift ‘ it with bright accessories if it makes you feel better. So it’s a yes from me!

Sorry I was being a bit of a dick. But it's very pyjama-y. I think the pattern which is quite bedcover reminiscient doesn't help. A silk suit is a lovely idea though but I think you perhaps need a bold block colour and a bit more shape, and maybe no pattern.

JDM625 · 21/06/2025 13:54

Sorry, I too thought they were pyjamas. I assume we'd need to take the legs up if you are short, because they look very long- even on the model.

Meant to add, could you wear the trousers with a different blouse, or the top with different, plain trousers. Its the combo of the loose look and the floral pattern that make them look like pyjamas.

IzzyHandsIsMySpiritAnimal · 21/06/2025 13:57

I think it looks good other than the trend for having thngs half tucked in. That said, if that's how you'd wear it, then go ahead. It's smartly casual and a bit different different to the typical floaty dresses that abound.

heldinadream · 21/06/2025 14:00

What's the fabric? I think it's lovely and provided it's the right kind of fabric (not polyester and not linen unless it's with added viscose to stop the creasing) it'll be fine. Maybe a nice crisp bright single colour shirt underneath the jacket? I really like it!

Thanks I like that blue suit actually, didn't spot that on next. I will add that to the basket. I am on mounjoro at the moment and wedding is in Sept so a more tailored fit would be difficult to buy in advance.

Oooh interesting that a few people like it! I do like things a wee bit quirky and I love the fact that it looks comfy, but I know that there is a pyjamas vibe to it. I wouldn't tuck in in and would probably wear a cami under it. I m 60 btw, not a young 'un if that makes a difference. Any other suggestions welcome.

It doesn't look like pyjamas and is much nicer than that outfit. It's a pleasant change from the usual Phase 8 wedding stuff.

Saltedcarameltiramisucheesecake · 21/06/2025 14:45

I'd wear it, love navy and cream, but I am tall. Thinking if you are short it might swamp you?

MorrisZapp · 21/06/2025 14:48

If you love it then wear it, but if you're looking for objective guidance I'd say that isn't a short person's outfit. I'm short too and even in heels I don't think I could carry it off.

NcforMeNc · 21/06/2025 14:49

They really do look exactly like Jammies.

If they don't look out of place as Pjs i wouldn't wear them outside.

Deadringer · 21/06/2025 15:41

Yeh too many people think they look like pjs so I will keep looking. I might consider the jacket with plain navy trousers but I think I can probably do better. I have seen lots of nice jackets but the matching trousers are all very wide and unfortunately i am just too short for them. Cheers all

Ah sorry you've been dissuaded OP, I really like that outfit! Love the botanical print, and silky 'pyjamas' are pretty darn trendy. (Though, as you say you're short and widelegs don't suit you, I'm not sure why you thought this style would!)
And more fun than a linen suit imo.

Fun fashion fact, pyjama-styled separates were popular as daywear among the Bright Young Things of the 1930s.

Goditsmemargaret · 21/06/2025 22:29

I love it. Do you have a link? I want it.

moose62 · 22/06/2025 07:11

No the point OP but if you are on Mounjaro, by September you might have lost some significant weight, so perhaps shop/ panic buy nearer the time?

LadyLapsang · 22/06/2025 08:35

If it were high quality and silk station, silk or silk mix, I would wear it, but I am 5 10. I also would get a lot of wear afterwards in mixing and matching with other items, e.g. dressing down the trousers with a simple T or plain silk tank.

LightOfTheLake · 22/06/2025 09:33

It really doesn’t look like PJs, honestly. Looks elegant, stylish, cool. Please don’t let those comments put you off a great choice.

I google lensed it.

I'm firmly in the does not look like pyjamas camp. (And much nicer than a lot of what is on other wedding guest outfit threads)

Looks great to me! I also dislike a lot of typical wedding guest outfits. You'll rock it!

Deadringer · 22/06/2025 11:14

Oh lots more replies, mostly positive. Re the mounjoro, I am a plodder, losing max a pound a week so I can guesstimate what I will be in Sept, with hols coming up i will probably only be about a stone down. and one of the reasons I like this is because it's elastic waist and sort of slouchy (like pjs 😆) so easy fit. The legs are wide but with soft fabric I could get away with them better than the wide, stiffer, linen type trousers. I could wait until nearer the time but I am an odd shape and hard to fit. Sadly I am not stylish or confident so not sure if I can make this outfit look good, but I think i will buy it and see how it looks on. Thanks all.
