If you are over 50, what makes you glow?

Not specifically skin but obviously that’s part of it. I am feeling pretty washed out and it’s getting me a bit down. I dont mind looking 50 but I do mind looking faded.

i don’t colour my hair but it’s only 50/50 grey and light brown which probably doesnt help. But it’s shiny and can look really nice (have been stopped in the street to be complimented before) but also can look a bit swampy, it’s all a bit random. Skin is pretty good (genetics and basic routine), I take vitamins, my sleep is ok. Exercise could be better but there is some, diet good. Stress medium sometimes high but that’s life.

stuff like bright lipstick just doesn’t work on me - I have spent hours and pounds on this quest, asked for help at loads of make up counters etc. always look like a kid who’s trying on mummy’s.

i try to wear colours that suit. Had my colours ‘done’ 10 years ago but they aren’t hitting the spot in the same way.

i just feel a bit meh so need some suggestions please.

50 exactly here , not over but for me these work

  • collagen and low carb Mon- Fri : makes skin texture amazing , doesn’t look 50 at all . Also gives good energy
  • face yoga : no saggy jaw, and nicely amplified cheekbones
  • anti grey serum (I have tiny bit grey hair due to this )
  • Botox for the 11s
on certain areas I look fresher than 20 years ago 😂

just some suggestions ….

KarolKickie · 21/06/2025 09:27

Oh yes agree with the above. Tho don’t do Botox.

start face yoga today !

also rosehip oil from The Ordinary

TheGlamour · 21/06/2025 09:27

Get a new haircut and colour! Find talented professionals who can suggest something you’ll feel wholly positive about rather than just ambivalent.

Even if your diet is good it could probably be better. More wholefoods? Weekly veg box? More fresh air?

Crucially - where do you shop? Are your clothes just ‘nice’ or do they have some ‘oomph’? Once you’ve had your hair revived it should be easier to experiment with new colours and proportions in clothes and accessories.

Poppiesandroses · 21/06/2025 09:28

@BrentfordForever what face yoga do you do ?

SirChenjins · 21/06/2025 09:34

A good cut and colour
Eyebrows shaped and tinted
Fresh air and exercise
Plenty of sleep
Little/no alcohol
No smoking
Halo Glow mixed with my foundation that has an spf
Lippy (took me a while but now have a couple of shades that suit me)
Moisturiser (blue tub of Nivea)
Plenty of water and herbal teas, little/no caffeine
Clothes that suit me rather than 'fashion'

DelphiniumBlue · 21/06/2025 09:37

If lipstick makes you look like a kid trying on mummy’s, you’re almost certainly trying in colours that are too strong for you. Go for something less bright, in a sheerer finish- more like a tinted lip balm.
A little blusher, cream or gel rather than powder and tinted eyelashes and brows help to create a fresher look.

henlake7 · 21/06/2025 09:51

Sleep is the thing that makes most difference to me.....also one of the hardest to achieve!

DustyMaiden · 21/06/2025 09:52

Radiation sickness

Screamingabdabz · 21/06/2025 09:54

Contentment.

maddiemookins16mum · 21/06/2025 09:55

Eyebrows done, teeth cleaned, a short snappy hairstyle (regular trims) and lots of fruit, veg and water. I only wear a light powder and decent lippy, no other make up. Plus, an expensive neck cream.

AndSoFinally · 21/06/2025 09:57

Microneedling. I cannot tell you how much difference this has made to my non-wrinkly but congested and dull-looking skin. I started with a roller and have since moved on to an electric pen thing. Makeup goes on better, redness has gone down, pores are smaller. I just look "fresher" some how

Agree with this. I've never got on with bright coloured lipstick - like the OP, it just makes me look like I'm a child who's been into their mum's makeup bag. I've recently discovered Revlon Glass Shine Lipstick which is a combination of lippy, gloss and balm but without the stickiness. I love it, it gives a bit of colour without being overpowering.

Pinkyplat · 21/06/2025 10:27

Tinted eyebrow gel.

No. 7 do a good cheap one.

Quick, easy, gives my face more definition.

NewDogOwner · 21/06/2025 10:28

I'm 47 but snail mucus moisturiser. It's super cheap on Amazon and has millions of great reviews.

KarolKickie · 21/06/2025 10:39

I do Pilates with Lisa, using snail Mucas as a base and also using a nuface electric face toner. Very efficient !

myladyjane · 21/06/2025 12:12

Thanks for these, interesting reading. I think the lipstick advice is spot on actually. I have been reading a bit about kibbe body shapes and the one I think I may be (soft classic) said sheer make up may suit best so definitely one to try.

off to read more about microneedling and face yoga, both of which sound v interesting

Nothing!😀

Although, I probably look better when my eyebrows are shaped and tinted, have sublte fake tan, well placed blusher, as well as highlights to hide greys.

Walking and running make me feel better.

It’s cruel

Pineapplesunshine · 21/06/2025 12:28

Another advocate for face yoga. Also, red light treatment makes a big difference for me. You have to do it regularly, but I find it relaxing - I do it before bed and it helps me fall asleep, which also helps me look better ☺️.
Sorry - edited to say, I’m actually just shy of 50, but a few years ago I fell off an aging cliff - long covid, peri, etc - and this helped me claw my way back a little

Same ! 🤣

thornbury · 21/06/2025 12:32

No smoking
No booze
Moisturiser everywhere
Good SPF
Gentle exercise
Healthy weight
Friends
Rewarding work
Happy relationship, if in one
Dressing in things that suit me and wearing shorts/bikini/strappy tops if I want to (which I do, its over 40c where I live)

Inextremis · 21/06/2025 12:33

Hot flushes, mostly

AsCoolAsKimDeal · 21/06/2025 12:33

Tan-Luxe face drops mixed with my moisturiser a couple of times a week. They’re subtle (I’m VERY pale) but make me look a bit glowier.

myladyjane · 21/06/2025 12:55

@Inextremis yet to have this joy - I am perpetually cold!

yes re eye brows. I do my own and they are ok but I think I need to periodically lash out and have them done properly. Last year just before a big holiday, I went to have brows shaped, tache removed and then tinted my own lashes ad brows. Well, she used hot wax rather than threading, brought my skin out in red welts then I left the brow stuff on too long and it didn’t fade. I looked deformed. My husband bless him kept trying to tell me I didn’t look too bad but even he couldn’t keep a straight face. I’ve fought a bit shy of salons since then……
