Over 40 and struggling with foundation

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 17/06/2025 16:33

Sooooo wise ladies of S&B...I am struggling with keeping foundation on my face...whatever I use it just slides off my face particularly my nose as am a glasses wearer.

I have used Nars for years, recently tried ilmakiage (it's good for colour but rubbish at staying put) I've tried cheaper brands etc and they are all as bad.

I use a serum, a decent moisturiser with spa and primer. Tried mattifying ones, the grip ones and they don't help.

Where am I going wrong?

What type of skin do you have?

MrsGrowl · 17/06/2025 17:38

Do you put powder on top?

Shuttheblinds · 17/06/2025 17:44

This used to be me! I moved to Double Wear as the best one that didn’t side off. But any primer, even high end ones made everything worse. So I used to use a very lightweight gel moisturiser, doublewear foundation then set it with a bit of powder, not too much as it can look cakey. Then always use a setting spray. It made a big difference.
I’ve stopped using foundation now though and use a skin tint because I think as I get older foundation just looks to heavy on me.

Catwoman8 · 17/06/2025 17:49

I was an avid user of estee launder double wear for years. I don't think anything quite matches up up to the staying power of that and I have tried various upmarket brands. Nowadays though I find it feels too heavy on my skin, but they have a lighter option, double wear light. I don't use foundation much anymore, but I quite like the no 7 hydraluminous one. I find it stays on quite well and it feels much ligher on my skin, also a lot cheaper than some of the high end ones!

LilacPony · 17/06/2025 17:52

Yes I have this issue! I now use Mac concealer under my eyes, and parts on my chin and nose. I then use a triangle fleece like material applicator to put powder foundation on. I think liquid foundation days are gone. I then use powder blush/bronze.

lovemycbf · 17/06/2025 17:56

Laura Geller baked powder stays on my face better than liquid foundation

FloraBotticelli · 17/06/2025 18:06

Maybe it’s too many layers for you? I know they like to upsell at the makeup counters, but my skin has never felt good with all those layers - serum, moisturiser, primer, foundation. Foundation would definitely slide off.

I’ve switched to Estée Lauder Futurist Hydra Rescue moisturising foundation (in my 40s). I only use moisturiser underneath.

Yeah use a setting powder...have even tried setting spray on top of that and it still slides off.

I have quite dry skin and before using serum under moisturiser my make up would end up cakey.

I have tried less layers, forgoing the serum and moisturiser but it makes no difference to the staying power.

I have tried the baked minerals powder stuff but it just doesn't suit my skin unfortunately. It tends to make me itch and doesn't really cover as well as liquid. I have quite red cheeks so look for sometime to give a balancing coverage

Are you leaving enough time between applying products? For face I would put on serum ... wait 10min ... a light moisturiser... wait 10min ... then makeup

FlutteryButterfly · 17/06/2025 22:55

I personally found doublewear awful.for my skin. It sank into every pore, line and crease. It was so cakey my skinny looked distressed vintage!

I've got on quite well with Laura Gellers baked foundation- not heavy, good coverage and a little goes a long way.

It really does come down to skin type though!

GivingUpFinally · 17/06/2025 23:14

As I vet offer double wear feels claggy and heavy but Estee lauder has always been the best colour match for my skin. I now mix it with a drop of serum or with double wear light and it works a treat

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 18/06/2025 11:19

I've swapped to garnier bb cream for now which is sitting better.

I'd rather go in and be able tonsee the colours and match rather than use Internet places. Can you buy alaura Geller in any shops?

I have slightly oily skin, and I ended up looking shiny or foundation would slide off my face. I wear Estee Lauder Double Wear, not cheap but absolutely brilliant. Highly recommend.

MangoBlink · 18/06/2025 15:03

Try IT cosmetics CC cream xx

Trishyb10 · 18/06/2025 19:02

Max factor or maybelline from boots/superdrug work for me, try ordering sample size 5ml from likes of ebay before you commit xx

PauliesWalnuts · 18/06/2025 19:09

I know you said you’d tried it and didn’t like it but the Bare Minerals is the only thing I can find that doesn’t slide off my oily skin. I had a quick lesson on how to apply and a colour match from the woman in Boots which really helped.

Delatron · 18/06/2025 19:16

I haven’t worn foundation for at least 15 years! Normally use a BB cream. Currently liking the Trinny one.

LawdAMercy · 18/06/2025 19:30

I’ve recently discovered Laura Geller products and went for the powder foundation and clean. Really happy with there colour match and it doesn’t slide/sink into my pores like other products.

Teasloth · 18/06/2025 19:45

42 here and I've struggled with this for ages. Best thing I've found in years is Sculpted Hydra tiny by Aimee. (no idea who Aimee is but needed a tinted moisturiser with a bit more tint and less moisturiser!) To me it just feels like a light foundation but has really good coverage for my redness around my chin and lips. I use no 3, I'm dark haired and pale ish with a little sun on my face and it's a perfect match.

Can try it out in Boots. Best thing I've bought in years and years and I've tried it all from £3 ones to £63 ones!!

Are your foundation and moisturiser both water based or both oil based? They don’t play nice if one is water and one is oil.

TwinklySquid · 18/06/2025 19:52

I have dry skin. I find Bobbi Brown or Liza Eldridge very good as they are lighter.

Both water based.

I don't want to order online again, i want to be able to try it. I have had reactions to lots of make up brands so don't want to spend a bomb only to find they I have a reaction.

It's just bloody frustrating!

L'oreal Paris true match tinted serum is really good. I use it over moisturiser and use the concealer too. I dont need a serum with this and it stays put. Its light texture for the day and i use more for when i need more coverage in the evening. I stopped using foundation because it settled in my wrinkles. This has good coverage and has a good choice of shades.
