Over 40 and struggling with foundation

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 17/06/2025 16:33

Sooooo wise ladies of S&B...I am struggling with keeping foundation on my face...whatever I use it just slides off my face particularly my nose as am a glasses wearer.

I have used Nars for years, recently tried ilmakiage (it's good for colour but rubbish at staying put) I've tried cheaper brands etc and they are all as bad.

I use a serum, a decent moisturiser with spa and primer. Tried mattifying ones, the grip ones and they don't help.

Where am I going wrong?

Clairins is excellent

Revlon Colorstay foundation.
Bake some translucent powder in slippy places.
Loreal infallible setting spray In the red can. It's like spraying your face with hair spray but works a treat.
Your face will stay on all day & night

I have similar skin to you by the sounds of it. I changed from double wear as just too heavy and cakey as my skin got older. I now use Revlon colorstay foundation. Good buildable coverage. It covers my red cheeks and stays on for a full 12.5 shift. I usually just use a ceramide cleanser, a hyaluronic serum, then a light moisturiser like Simple. Finish with a spritz of setting spray. 🙂

Thanks will have a look for this one

I use it too. Brilliant.

I use garnier bb cream well buffed in with a dusting of Laura Geller ballance and brighten on top seems to work well on my 60 year old skin. Occasionally use Charlotte Tilbury setting spray on top.

Just to warn you that if you’ve got sensitive skin, the Laura Geller baked foundation might not suit you. I’ve never reacted to any make up or skin products before but that one really upset my skin.

L'oreal Paris true match tinted serum is really good. I use it over moisturiser and use the concealer too. I dont need a serum with this and it stays put. Its light texture for the day and i use more for when i need more coverage in the evening. I stopped using foundation because it settled in my wrinkles. This has good coverage and has a good choice of shades.

I use this as well, think it's great.

At the minute I'm using erborian cc, shade clair. It's too dark for me in winter but it's bang on in summer. They do an anti redness product as well.

Full coverage is no good for me.

Fair, combination skin and mid-50's here. I wear Estee Lauder Doublewear Light almost every day. It has to be removed, it never slips off. I am blessed with good skin but do have some wrinkles and I find that it does not sit in them at all. Highly recommend.

Try IT cosmetics CC cream xx

It’s brilliant stays on my 63 year old face just all day from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm as long as I use setting powder and spray.

Sureitwont · 19/06/2025 18:46

I use Chanel water fresh tint- it stays put and doesn’t look heavy. Doesn’t sit in wrinkles and fine lines either

I was a huge fan of Double wear too but a)they discontinued the BB version which was by far & away the best and b) I find now that by late in the working day it has begun to settle into my lines (I'm 57.) SO.... thanks to Sali Hughes's column I've been trying Milk Hydro Grip Gel Tint and it's a total game changer. Have had people commenting on how fresh my makeup looks (even later in the day.) At £30 well worth your trying x

I have dry skin. I find Bobbi Brown or Liza Eldridge very good as they are lighter.

Another vote for Bobbi Brown - I use face base first, let it almost dry before foundation - then it stays put all day for me - 'blot' a bit with a foundation 'stubby' brush - but we are all different. Previous night skin care also affects the next day's skin - Prevage (face scrub) is also great, smooths skin, both a bit costly, but last for ages.(just my opinion, but works for me). I have read good things about 'Elf' - but not tried it yet. (Powder based foundation doesn't work for me at all).

L’Oreal True Match. They do different formulations so have a look at which one would work best for your skin type.

Laura Geller baked just made me look orange, it oxidised so quickly!!!

Nicky LA Rose in You Tube helped me find L’Oreal, she’s great to watch as a pro make up artist and is so honest, give her a watch.

I used to swear by loreal but as I have got older their formula makes me itch like crazy.

I have soentnhours in our local giant boots talking to the ladies on the counters but nothing seems to work on me currently.

Someone recommended clinque make up, but their skin care stuff makes me wanna rip my skin off so I dont really wanna risk it.

Hi OP,Space NK (check which branches have it as not all do) and I think the dedicated Boots beauty stores. Worth sampling as there are quite a few shades. I use tan drops on my face and got 6,then I have 7 for holiday/when I'm browner.

Game0fCrones · 26/06/2025 19:11

You have to go with a lighter formula as you get older. Try Jones Road Balm or Clinique Even better glow. Powder your nose & use a setting spray with that one. Avoid the crinkly areas (keep it to the centre of your face.
