Oil for dry peri skin

Superwomann · 12/06/2025 06:04

I feel like it’s hormonal changes causing my dry skin. I’ve tried weleda, coconut, vit e and rosehip oil but my skin, especially on my legs is still very dry. Anyone got any recommendations?

following with interest as I’ve the exact same problem

SurpriseSparDay · 12/06/2025 06:27

Fistfuls of magnesium salts in your bath helps.

I’ve used (mostly) olive oil for decades. (With a few drops of whatever essential oil I’m using.) It can take a good while - months maybe - before your skin responds, but once you reach that point it’s better than any ‘commercial’ moisturiser. I daresay other oils would also work if used consistently.

Are you exfoliating regularly? Scrubby thing in the shower, chemical exfoliant, homemade salt or sugar scrub occasionally? Whichever you prefer. Really helps to allow the oil to work.

Exfoliation is key here. It might be worth trying salicylic acid. I use the Paula's choice bha serum but the ordinary also have a cheap one. Then a thicker night cream, allow to soak in and then put on an oil. Olive oil, almonds oil are good. If my skin is particularly dry I put Vaseline on, just a thin layer at night. But the exfoliating is the most important step.

Superwomann · 12/06/2025 12:20

Thank you! I’ll definitely try the exfoliation as I’m not doing that.

One of these makes it an easy thing to do every day:

(Amazon sells them too.)

TheOliveFinch · 12/06/2025 17:40

Castor oil is brilliant very moisturising but is also thick so I mix it 50:50 with rosehip

I've been using bio oil on my VERY dry legs, it's made such a difference and best of all, it's not that greasy at all.

Notyourfaultbutmine · 12/06/2025 18:01

I have the same issue with dry lower legs and after trying all sorts I tried my DH's Epaderm which I think is for eczema and it works great. I only need to use it every few days and a normal body lotion in between.

Mum23plusC · 12/06/2025 18:17

Epiderm is good. Also I tried Dermatonics Dry Skin Balm (got it cheaper online).

RebelliousHoping · 12/06/2025 18:30

Johnson’s baby oil worked a treat on patch of dry skin on upper leg for me.

Literally few drops and inexpensive.

BooBooDoodle · 12/06/2025 18:33

I have been using an AHA scrub on my legs and then applying Vaseline Mature Skin moisturiser to damp skin. Honestly this has been a huge game changer for me. My legs look so much better for it.

GoldDuster · 12/06/2025 18:35

Another vote for castor oil here, I slap it all over, and some stretchy exfoliating gloves in the shower.

Iamthemoom · 12/06/2025 19:10

Bio Oil but the natural version without all the nasty chemicals.

Kaykay247 · 12/06/2025 19:23

I add my castor oil to a good moisturiser as it makes it easier to apply. And collagen was suggested for my joints. Did absolutely nothing for them. But my skin is vastly improved!

fatgirlswims · 12/06/2025 19:23

Cetraben oatmeal is really really good- the best I have found.
Skin feels plump and last for a few days ( 45 and feel the same!)

Rp735 · 12/06/2025 19:29

Pure shea butter. Has been a game changer once I got used to the smell.

Rina66 · 12/06/2025 19:48

I use bio oil too for my very dry skin, I like the smell and find oils so much quicker and easier to use. I’ve just ordered the Bio Oil body lotion to try, arrives tomorrow, apparently you have to shake it to mix the ingredients, I hope it smells nice!

Glitchymn1 · 12/06/2025 19:51

I’ve been using neutrogena dry oil.

gottogonow · 12/06/2025 20:09

I had exactly the same-my legs in particular would be visibly dry but since having a fortnightly bath and exfoliating after a good soak it’s so much better. Epaderm is great too.

menopausalfart · 12/06/2025 20:10

Eucerin is awesome. Cleared up my dry skin really quickly.

WellyBellyBoo · 12/06/2025 20:21

Doublebase was the only thing that helped for me. When it gets bad I wash with emollient instead of soap/shower gel.

Rina66 · 12/06/2025 20:52

Oh yes, I don’t use shower gel either, I only use Dove bar soap

SurpriseSparDay · 12/06/2025 20:56

(Though that isn’t actually soap, @Rina66.)

NeedForSpeed · 12/06/2025 21:01

Not oil, but Cerave moisturiser. I buy the pump bottle and apply it every day after a shower. Soaks in quickly, only needs a moment before throwing clothes on. Fixed my itchy legs!

Rina66 · 12/06/2025 21:10

Ah yes apologies @SurpriseSparDayI know they call it a ‘beauty cream bar’ and the fact that it’s not soap is why it doesn’t dry my skin out - it definitely cleans it though, far better than shower gels for me, it contains something that works!
