My heels could tear the sheets

Only a slight exaggeration.

I've been having baths not showers recently which always make my feet worse. I'm also overweight which I know doesnt help and I get dry skin.

I file them reguparly. I used to use that grey sponge/brick that came in a green box but they don't sell that anymore so I use a similar thing but you use it dry. I moisturise every night and on mornings when I can.

I did try just moisturising and no filing for a while but that just left me with cracked heels.

Even when they feel lovely and soft they look white and dry.

Any suggestions?

Another Flexitol or CCS fan here.

I make a scrub for my heels from olive oil and sugar. Use that a few times a week and the cream and socks twice a day.

My heels used to split and bleed before.

Lol I thought this was going to be a dilemma about wearing sexy stilettos in bed and worrying about the good sheets 😁

I used to use Flexitol but I now use 40% Urea cream from Amazon for about £8 a tub. I find it much more effective.

Urea is a keratolytic (helps shed thickened skin) and also a humectant.

I’d try 40% urea for a couple of days without filing and see how that goes if your skin is sore.

See a (registered) chiropodist.

Looking after your feet is money well spent.

What do they do that can't be done at home? Genuine question.

Newfigtree · 28/09/2025 10:31

You need Milky Foot.

Lots. Google it.
Among other routine things, mine wrote to my doctor who then referred me for an X-ray for a suspected broken foot.

I have a bit of a phobia about hard skin on heels (so much so, I could list my friends with manky hooves) and absolutely no hard skin on my feet. I use a foot file in the bath, the scholl battery operated one, and I use Flexitol once or twice a week.

Why did you need a letter?

I wear sandals for six months of the year. I cannot bear socks and shoes unless it's actively chilly outside. I pay for this in dry skin! My feet are so much better when I get back into socks and shoes but I'm willing to suffer the rough heels and let my feet breathe.

Why did you need a letter?

The letter prompted the GP to refer me for the X-ray without having to see me. It saved time and hassle.

Did the XRay show anything ?

Did the XRay show anything ?

It showed a minor fracture that was pretty much healed. It stopped hurting soon afterwards.

Flexitol and silicone socks overnight, and a microplane cheese grater thing, go steady with this it's easy to overdo it. They'll be sorted within a week.

Seriously, people should look after their feet. A session with a chiropodist can remove hard skin, corns and treat verrucas. He or she will trim your nails properly (this matters) and make mini orthotics for misaligned toes. You don’t realise how uncomfortable it can get until you’ve had your feet seen to. My job involved me being on them a lot and it made such a difference.
Now I’m older and have a minor heart problem I find it reassuring that I get the circulation in my feet checked as well.
Of course, having well-kept feet that look reasonably nice is part and parcel of looking after yourself. Why wouldn’t you, if possible?

Use soap, not shower gel on your feet. I remember a thread years ago where it gradually transpired that those of us who use soap had little to no hard skin issues.
