Comfortable but beautiful flat shoes for black tie

It’s my DS’ leaving ball shortly, parents go along too. I’ve got a suitable dress, lacey, dark green midi, suitable for lots of occasions, but I’m stumped with shoes. I actually tend to wear with trainers, but don’t think that’s appropriate for a black tie event…

So, I like the idea of some gold flats or VERY low heels (I really, really can’t wear heels anymore), but I don’t want my feet ripped to shreds. If I can wear them for summer holiday evenings too, even better.

in my head I’m thinking a Danish kind of vibe, but don’t really know where to look beyond usual High St shops. I just hoped someone may have a wonderful idea of some great brands that are known for instant comfort and style…

Personally I think sandals are too informal for black tie.

EmmaStone · 07/06/2025 11:43

I love the Esska shoes, loads of options there. Can anyone attest to their comfort?

Doesn't it depend on the sandal? I'd agree they shouldn't be flip-flops, espadrilles or fisherman's sandals but an elegant, strappy pair would be acceptable. The Princess of Wales has worn evening sandals to black tie events so it can't be a huge faux pas to do so.

Do you have wide feet or a ‘big’ big toe? If so would recommend barefoot brands - some lovely barefoot gold flats on Etsy I’ve been eyeing for a while, also look at Shapen and Groundies.

I have these (and also the Charlies mention by a PP poster which are super comfy but not flat), they are pretty, very versatile and come in a wide fit. You can get 10% of by signing up to the mailing list. Most of the suggestions are not black tie suitable imo

Sorry, replied without seeing this. I think my Charlie ones are more comfy than the auroras but the aurora have more structure which always takes a bit more breaking in for me

@EmmaStone was about to suggest Esskas as well…..they are very comfortable as long for me as I do not buy the higher ones. Really great shoes/sandals.

RampantIvy · 07/06/2025 13:55

Why are so many dressy flat shoes so pointy? They make my eyes water to just look at them. I prefer almond shaped toes for looks and comfort.

Are you able to wear kitten heels OP ?
Ones in the exact same colour as dress would be fab if they’re easy to source ….
I wore a striking colour red dress one time to a wedding , with exact same colour red strappy sandal & bag & it was lovely …

Lostuser · 07/06/2025 18:16

Can we see a pic of the dress or something similar to see what we are working with. I think a midi length is difficult to wear personally unless it’s with a heel. (Unless it’s a super casual one with trainers) Could you possibly get a longer dress or maybe a trouser suit?

EmmaStone · 07/06/2025 19:05

The dress is not dis-similar to this (a couple of years old so no direct link), but in forest green. Yes, I know it would look better with heels, but I wear trainers/DMs/Burkies and Tevas all.the.time.

But I really like the Esskas, and given so many recommendations, I’ll order some to try out. Thank you all so so much.

Agree entirely. Maybe at the very end of the night to go home in but otherwise no.

You need to tell the many, many women who wear metallic sandals for black tie events.

Judecb · 07/06/2025 21:04

Have a look at Gabor shoes - in John Lewis, Jones and on line. Always super comfortable.

hettie · 07/06/2025 21:26

Did they arrive op? Just wondering if a forest green dress might need a more bronze/pewter colour?

EmmaStone · 07/06/2025 22:10

No, I only ordered a couple of hours ago!

I have been massively surprised by clarks this summer - for a similar situation I go these https://www.clarks.com/en-gb/sensa-15-shine/26181315-p but I also bought a silver version of these https://www.very.co.uk/clarks-alda-strap/1601102732.prd which are quite honestly like walking on clouds but I can't seem to find them in the UK (I live abroad so got them from clarks) but may be worth looking for.

I love the first pair @SilverCoins are they true to size? What colour did you get?

SilverCoins · 08/06/2025 01:18

@bendmeoverbackwardsid say true to size, I have narrow feet so sling backs often don't work for me but the small strap across the top of the foot stops that. I got the champagne color which is quite subtle metallic
